engels spreekoefening

Zou er iemand mijn tekst even willen nakijken? Alvast bedankt.

Herald of free enterprise was an roll-on roll-off car and passenger ferry. She was one of the three ships commissioned to operate on the Dover-Calais route across the English Channel.

What happened?
On 6 march 1987at 19:05, just after departure at 7 o’clock in the evening, the ship capsized at about 91 meters away from the Belgian haven of Zeebrugge. There was at that time 80 men staff on board and she carried 131 vehicles. The ship normally went to Dover, an important haven in Kent in England.
Now I go describe the cause of the disaster.
The ship has two car decks. The top car deck had a problem. The ramp which connects the ship with the wall to load up the cars was good enough to reach the lowest deck but not the top deck. So they made the ship heavier by filling the forward water ballasts. In this way the ship becomes deeper in the water so the ramp can connect with the top deck. This practice took like 40 minutes. When the ship departed, the water ballasts weren’t completely empty so the ship sailed to low in the water.

The second problem was a big human mistake. The guy who was responsible for the closing of the doors was sleeping. So the ship departed with open doors.

The third problem was time. The ship lost like an hour to load the two car decks so the captain sailed at 18,9 knots or 35 km/h what makes the water forms high waves.

The combination of this 3 problems made the ship capsizing on a sandbar. The seawater came in the load place of the ship and the cars slides to one side. The capsizing took 90 seconds and the total weight of the ship was 80000 tonnes.

Rescuing
A dredger noticed the herald’s light disappear and notified the port authorities. A rescue helicopter arrived within half an hour, shortly followed by assistance from the Belgian Navy who were undertaking an exercise within the area. Many victims succumbed to hypothermia cause of the cold water.

capsize on a sandbar.

Apple... /eppul/ klinkerklank
An apple /uneppul/ Medeklinkerklank

dit wordt bijvoorbeeld duidelijk uit de engelse zin voor: recht zo die gaat; "steady as she goes" en "As near thereto as she can safely get".
