After releasing the genre-defining Elaborations of Carbon and Catharsis, Yob secured a permanent line-up and signed to Metal Blade for its most anticipated release yet. The Illusion of Motion contains a mere four songs, but boasts a length of upwards of 50 minutes. "Ball of Molten Lead," "Exorcism of the Host" and the 26-minute title track are the type of songs you have come to expect from Yob--epic, slow burners. That's not to say that these songs are typical by any stretch, it is just that they are already, immediately Yob standards. Never has a band played with such restraint, thus adding to the increasing anticipation for the climax as each song lumbers along. Those who have criticized Mike Sheidt's vocals in the past will find that the use of voice effects has been kept to a minimum. Comparisons have been drawn between Scheidt and Geddy Lee, but Sheidt continues to show much better range and is not annoying like Lee, or even Burke Shelley. Scheidt's finest hour, vocally anyway, comes on the title track, the album's 26-minute closer. After the song picks up steam, he takes on a Dave Mustaine-like tone that works to great effect. "Doom #2" showcases that the band are masters of writing more concise metal tunes as well. It's a shame the band doesn't do more of this. "Doom #2" offers a much needed breath before the album's long-winded closer, a song that should have been shortened a bit. Unlike the song, "Catharsis," the song, "The Illusion of Motion" takes the listener through what the band has made familiar territory, only the reward is not exciting as is expected. It's composed well, as it comes full circle and has an interesting cacophonous guitar solo, but may leave the listener saying, "that's it." While some listeners may say I lack the necessary patience to thoroughly enjoy Yob, I say that music is my escape from a world that requires me to be overly patient. I don't want to have to wait around to be entertained by music too. Nevertheless, the title track doesn't ruin an otherwise great album. It's certainly a worthy purchase, but maybe not essential, despite the fact that great moments are found throughout. For example, the guitar solo on "Exorcism of the Host" is among the most soulful in recent metal history.

Niet nodig hoor. Check dan Glenn Branca, dat heeft meer het GY!BE-gevoel, vind ik, vooral zijn symfonieen.
