Surviving members look cautiously to the future



It took a tragedy and two phone calls to reunite the surviving members of Alice in Chains. Days after the Southeast Asia tsunami, drummer Sean Kinney contacted guitarist Jerry Cantrell and bassist Mike Inez and proposed a benefit to aid the victims of the disaster. They agreed without hesitation.
Along with Damageplan singer Pat Lachman, they will take the stage of Seattle's Premier club on February 18th. The relief concert will also feature fellow Seattleites Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, Ann Wilson of Heart, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Christ DeGarmo of Queensryche and members of world music group Children of the Revolution.

"When something like this happens, you want to help," Kinney says. "I called people up here in the Northwest to see who was available, and Jerry and Mike were the first guys I called."

The show will be Kinney, Cantrell and Inez's first together in nine years - as well as their first without lead singer Layne Staley, who died from a drug overdose in 2002. "Obviously we all needed to take some time and all deal with the situation of the band and Layne's death," says Cantrell.

The three thought Lachman, who lost a bandmate himself in December when guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott was fatally shot in an Ohio nightclub, was a natural choice to join them. "I've known Pat through the Pantera and Damageplan guys for years," Cantrell explains. "We were all down in Dallas to support the family, and we actually played a couple of Alice songs at Dime's memorial, so it made sense."

For the benefit, the reunited group will perform material from the Alice in Chains catalog, and recording new music remains a possibility. "We're just starting with the gig, and we'll see what happens," Cantrell says. "But we can't wait to get into the room together. I've done plenty of [projects] without Sean and Mike, and, as far as having that silent chemistry, nobody really compares.

"If the last couple of months have shown me anything," he continues, "it's that it's still a really dangerous world we live in. You have to put one foot in front of the other . . . and if you look too far down the trail, you'll fall on your face."

Proceeds from the sold-out concert will benefit the global humanitarian organization CARE. Those interested in making donations can do so at care.org.

Wat mij betreft mogen ze wel de studio induiken, hoewel ik het frapant vind als ze de naam Alice in Chains blijven houden. Die link met Layne Staley zul je toch altijd blijven zien.
Ik ben benieuwd, die solo albums van Cantrell zijn érg goed, dus ik hoop zsm op nieuw materiaal (y)

nah, leuk als ze iets gaan doen maar dan wel onder een andere naam. alice in chains is dood.

Mwah, ok, de frontman is er niet meer, maar om nou te stellen dat de rest niks voortstelt?. Ik bedoel als je kijkt naar een band waar een gitarist weg gaat en een ander voor in de plaats komt, is de band toch ook niet gelijk dood? Was Slayer dood(drummer)? Was Iron Maiden dood?

Ik bedoel je kan wel zeggen dat een zanger het boegbeeld van een band vormt, maar ok ik bedoel je hoort niemand zeggen dat, ik noem maar wat, A Perfect Circle dood is, terwijl daar toch echt wel wat ingrijpendere memberswitches hebben plaatsgevonden.
Hoor je niemand over klagen. Zo zijn er nog wel meer voorbeelden. Af en toe hechten mensen iets te veel aan het oude vind ik.

Nou, die zanger bepaalde met zijn karakteristieke stem natuurlijk wel een groot gedeelte van de sound van de band. Aan de andere kant was het Cantrell die vrijwel alle nummers schreef.

die Lachman is geen beroerde zanger iig, maar zou mij ook verbazen als men onder AiC verder ging

helaas zijn ze niet gestopt nee

maar

het is met een andere zanger gewoon een band met een ander geluid, dus een andere band. en bij een andere band hoort een andere naam.

stem van Layne was te karakteristiek... alhoewel Jerry's stem met wat studiofoefjes ook wel in de buurt komt. Het zal echter nooit zo vet klinken als destijds...

Ik vind dat Degradation Trip zich toch wel kan meten met het betere AiC werk (y)

mwah... Is zeker geen slechte cd, maar tis geen Dirt of Jar of Flies ofzo.

Dat vond ik eerst ook niet, maar hoe vaker ik ze draaide, hoe beter ze werden. Ik heb het overigens over het dubbelalbum, dus ik weet niet welke nummers ze op die enkele cd gezet hebben. Wellicht dat het net weer de mindere zijn ;)

ik heb die dubbele ook gehad.... heb hem echter geruild voor een andere cd met iemand.

ok, I rest my case.

Ik kan me geen 'echte' Alice in Chains voorstellen zonder Stacey. Zijn stem was gewoon enorm belangrijk voor de sound van de band.

Alsnog leuk dat ze weer iets gaan doen.

en wat jullie al zeggen.. als ze opnieuw beginnen, dan onder een andere naam ;(
