Disclose

While I haven't heard very much of their extensive discography, their Nightmare or Reality LP in particular is like a full-length expansion of Discharge's first EP, an absolutely blistering thrash attack that will leave burn marks on those who haven't become accustomed to such intense sounds.

Listening to Disclose is like sitting in the midst of a nuclear explosion, debris flying past you so quickly, so intensely and at such a high volume that all you can do is sit there and let it wash over you.

While Disclose is hardly representative of the larger, more traditional Japanese hardcore scene they are undeniably one of the best bands in the world playing this sound, thus if you have any tolerance at all for this kind of D-beat hardcore Disclose are a mandatory listen.

It's been three years since The Helio Sequence's last album (2001's Young Effectuals, on Portland's Cavity Search label): far too long. Finally and triumphantly, the Portland, OR duo of Brandon Summers (guitars/vocals) and Benjamin Weikel (keyboards/drums) return with their third full-length, and first for Sub Pop, Love and Distance. The time between albums has been well-spent, logging several tours(keyboardist/drummer Benjamin Weikel also lends his percussive skills to Modest Mouse, doubling the tour time), extensive hours of experimentation and afternoons spent "listening to a lot of pop, Dylan and Can." More inventive than ever before, the new record finds The Helio Sequence armed with a surprising new instrumentation palette and buoyed by swift pop undercurrents, with this collision of electric and organic elements. Please welcome the Helio Sequence!

Severed head of state

Severed Head of State features an all star cast with Todd Burdette from His Hero Is Gone on guitar, Jack Conrow of Mind Control Records on vocals, Kelly from Detestation on bass, and Chris Pfeffer from Meadowlark on drums. The music is an onslaught of power that can be described as the inbred bastard of Detestation and His Hero Is Gone with a distorted beast on vocal duties.

severed head of state - an invitation to a beheading - 1998 to 2001 discography

This CD features all twenty-one tracks from the three Severed Head of State 7"s, the one sided 12" on Lengua Armada, and the Iron Columns compilation. These songs were recorded in two different sessions. The first set in March of 1998 and the second set in December of 1999. The second session was sent to Sweden to be re-mixed in April of 2001 to get an even more brutal and vicious sound. The newly mixed versions do not appear on vinyl.

New York Noise: Dance Music From the New York Underground 1978-1982

The most successful tracks refigure the cliches of early eighties dance and hip-hop with the weirdoid sensibilities of underground music. The Dance, who supply perhaps the best track with "Do Dada", take as a starting point the kind of new wave that would make Blondie famous, but cut it up with strange drum/violin breakdown and a whooping babel of vocals that undercut the funk with a vertiginous sense of schizophrenia. Rammelzee vs K. Rob's "Beat Bop" cruises a prime piece of slo-mo hip-hop rhythm overlaid with funk guitar, but then fuck things up with a random swirl of percussion that flies from speaker to speaker while occasionally plying the stoned rhymes with massive amounts of reverb for a genuinely spooked-out collision of party and paranoia. And that's not even mentioning the slyly straightforward robofunk of Dinosaur L, the haughty iciness of the Bush Tetras, or the proto-surf guitar of Lizzy Mercier Descloux.

But don't get hung up on individual achievements: after all, this is a document of a community, not just a random collection of early punk-funk explorers. And indeed, played start-to-finish, New York Noise begins to cohere into a joyously multi-hued mass, where hip-hop is a natural cousin of atonal noise, where minimalism becomes the perfect complement to funk, and where not even the skronked-out mess of DNA or the melodramatic ultra-seriousness of Glenn Branca can get in the way of a good party. New York Noise? Sounds like heaven to me.

Felix Kubin - Matki Wandalki

Old School? New School? In reality, both are just a question of orchestral and sound preference. The freespirit, in this case, decides for No School: for only from the fragments of No (ie. No Wave in reference to No New York) new forms can originate. And, at best, No would also imply idiosyncratic wanking and autodidactic self-empowerment.

As 11-year-old pre-teen, this Gyro Gearloose of pataphysical sound Felix Kubin not only sought for self-satisfaction with his legendary child-band „Die Egozentrischen 2“ but also instigated the first folk synthesizer against its own instruction manual (of course in accordance with the „zeitgeist“ at that time). The result was an elevated monstrosity from a merciless rage-experiment with frightening precociousness. All at the peak of the Neue Deutsche Welle...

Thank god that today, more than two decades later, there is no stopping this former „wunderkind“! Admittedly, the mischievous demolition of pop structures, which was once attributed to a juvenile Berserkerdom, has since then evolved into a more conscious Dada-Hooliganism. Or - to put it simple with the metaphor of the album title - it turned into the „Mothers of Destruction“ (in Polish: Matki Wandalki = Vandalizing Mothers).

The fact that the anaemic ghost of deconstruction doesn’t spoil the 13 tracks on this CD must have to do with Felix’ abstruse humor. Like his love of sounds, the hum of Kubin’s cosmos is powerfully distinct. It reminds (not only) me of tschechoslovakian animation films and – even further back – of the electro-acoustic sound experiments of the fifties avant-garde long before their development into pop,.

Matki Wandalki unites several pairs of aesthetic contradictions. Abstract Darmstadt goes Pop. The result is „witty“ musique concrete and something that I can only interpret as „program-music“ without a narrative „program“.

That by such cheerful science he would also come out with a real hit for the possibleWeb-Nerds-Casting-Show (Hit Me Provider) is no surprise for me. On the conrtrary, it’s more than ever pleasing. With it Felix should finally be making the well deserved dough...As for me, I just can’t leave him out of Pop...No School? Better this: Own School! Class Kubin!

Sommige mensen bedekken pindakaas met een lading hagelslag, anderen smeren een laagje aardbeienjam onder de kaas. Het zijn vreemde combinaties die in eerste instantie smerig klinken, maar toch verrassend lekker blijken te zijn. Aldus kindamuzik.

Julian Fane

http://www.planet-mu.com/images/artists/artist48.jpg

Julian hails from Vancouver, Canada. He worked as a day trader on the NASDAQ until he gave it up for music (man). I met him in Seattle on my Bilious Paths tour where he gave me a cd. He'd previously been in bands (Waikiki) and done electronic forum geek mp3 stuff under "Aardvark Interface" and "Taoist Blockade". But. This 21 year old has produced an album that belies his years. Epic songs that recall Radiohead, The Flaming Lips or Mercury Rev mix with the kind of lush electronic production heard on Múm's second album or Four Tet, but these songs build and have an intensity similar to Godspeed. OK, maybe I've bigged it up too much, but it's a good album. Girls like it. People who hate Planet Mu will like it. He'll probably sign to some other big label...
