This law is the French transcription of the european EUCD (European Union Copyright Directive) text, which itself comes from the american DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act).
The main goal of this law is to restrict the rights of digital content purchasers. It most notably forbids them from working around technical content protection measures.
Doing so, writing or publishing software allowing to do so, or even merely talking about ways to do so becomes an offence that can be punished with three years in jail.

VideoLAN is directly impacted, most notably for its DVD reading capability (all Linux DVD reading software has the same problem). Should this law be passed, this would seriously hinder VLC's development.

Zo krijgen die grote mediabedrijven veel te veel macht, en kun je bijvoorbeeld op linux geen dvd's meer afspelen. :mad:

Ach, net alsof dat soort maatregelen ooit kopiëren zullen stoppen. Zolang de prijzen blijven zoals ze zijn en internet blijft bestaan zal er ook gekopieerd worden. Dan kunnen overheden en zielepoten als Brein over lijken gaan by symptoombestrijding, maar het motief voor kopiëren van software, muziek en games neem je er niet mee weg.

Als het zo is dat hiermee specifieke softwaredevelopers achter gesteld worden geef ik een klacht wegens concurrentievervalsing trouwens aardig veel kans. In softwareland zitten meer nuances, maar op papier is het verbieden van een werkmethode effectief een concurrent het werken onmogelijk maken.

Interessante vraag of de bescherming van de grootgrutters of het behouden van de openheid van de markt voor concurrentie hier voor zou gaan.
