Soft Cell was an English synthesizer duo during the early 1980s (currently re-formed). They consisted of Marc Almond (vocals) and David Ball (synthesizers). Their lyrics often focused on love and romance as well as the darker side of life, with subjects such as kinky sex, transvestism, drugs and murder. They had a huge world-wide hit in 1981 with a cover version of "Tainted Love", a northern soul classic originally sung by Gloria Jones (the wife of Marc Bolan).

Both Marc Almond and David Ball grew up in seaside towns (the former, Southport, and the latter, Blackpool), and later met while students at the Leeds Polytechnic Fine Arts University (now Leeds Metropolitan University). Almond, a performance artist, collaborated with Ball on a few avant-garde multi-media performances at the university. Although Ball's musical background consisted of guitar, he had access to the university studio and was experimenting with the nascent synthesizer technology at the time. The two students became the prototypical synth duo and were initially associated with other New Wave scenesters dubbed "New Romantics" by the British Press. Other bands associated with this scene included Visage, Duran Duran, and Spandau Ballet.

Dat iedereen zegt dat ze Soft Cell ook leuk vinden en dan kan ik weer gerust gaan slapen :)

Tainted Love vind ik best een goed nummer. Voor de rest ken ik ze ni egt.

Hahaha toevallig, heb zo zitten lachen om soft cell de laatste tijd. Maakte een gast wijs dat soft cell goffik was lol. Anyways, new romantics is cool, maar er zijn andere bands die ik prefereer. OMD bijvoorbeeld. Waarom ik dit zeg ?

Tainted love is dunkt me wel goede kanshebber voor "irritantste kutnummer" ooit.

Nee. Zeker niet de originele versie.

Ik ken alleen Tainted Love, dat is toch best wel een vet nummer, zeker niet vervelend om naar te luisteren,

Dat sampletje uit Tainted Love is trouwens gebruikt voor één of ander tering nummer dat tegenwoordig op de buis wordt geprojecteerd.

Ik weet niet hoe je zo'n ding noemt. Een soort van digitaal-koebel-geluid.
