My Brightest Diamond is Shara Worden, granddaughter of an Epiphone-playing traveling evangelist, fathered by a National Accordion Champion, and mothered by a church organist. Spanish tangos, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. Her first song was recorded at age three and by age eight she was studying piano, performing in community musical productions and singing in her Pentecostal church choir, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where she spent most of her childhood.

Her songs distil stories to their most distressing points of contact: a phone call, an injured horse, a dragonfly caught in a spider's web. She doesn't share all the information - just the stuff that matters. The effect is a sensational compression of time, in which an entire event is summarized in a single note. This, of course, is the essence of opera. But My Brightest Diamond is much more than that. There is also the humor one might find in an old TV episode of Wonder Woman or Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Shara's songs reconcile all the complex emotions found in each of us: she can grieve as comfortably as she can laugh, sometimes in the same breath.

Shara was de belangrijkste van Sufjan Steven's Illinoisemakers en zingt alle vrouwelijke tweede stemmen op diens 'Illinoise'. Daarnaast speelt ze een heel arsenaal aan instrumenten.

In 2005 bracht ze 'A Thousand Shark's Teeth' uit, waarop ze slechts door een strijkerskwartet begeleid wordt, in 2006 volgde 'Bring Me The Workhorse' waarop ze met een complete band te horen is.
Haar muziek zou ik omschrijven als een mix van Jeff Buckley, Portishead en PJ Harvey, en haar stem doet me afwisselend denken aan Beth Gibbons, Kate Bush en Björk.

ze speelt 28 januari in het patronaat, support voor dayna kurtz.

Jaja, dat is nog eens een goede tip :) Op haar website staan ook nog enkele leuke video's. Geen gillers of zo, maar wel mooi.
Ze doet trouwens de hele Nederlandse doortocht met Dayna Kurtz. Dat zijn 5 avonden of zo. Absoluut niks tegen Dayna Kurtz, maar My Brightest Diamond kan je beter gaan zien als ze hoofdact is. 13 februari, Paradiso, kleine zaal. En tien euro is ze zeker waard.

Is dat eigenlijk een leuk zaaltje? Goede programmering, dat wel.

Oh, ja, kijk er al naar uit. My Brightest Diamond, leuk voor een avondje alleen op de bank, maar ook voor een avondje uit, denk ik.

En 13 februari in de paradiso voor een tientje.

Hmm klinkt goed.
Misschien ga ik wel naar Paradiso van de week. Of het moet al uitverkocht zijn door allerlei diehard sufjan stevens fans.

(y) had er laatst een nummer van gehoord via een vriend, klonk wel mooi
