Engels Summary

Hallo,
Bedankt !

Rachel Benjamin is the daughter of a rabbi who dreams of building a synagogue in the Ashley. Her mother gave birth to seven children and hates the idea of the new synagogue. Rachel is the rabbi’s eldest daughter. She’s expected to set an example for the community and her brothers and sisters. For example, she is supposed to wear thick stockings with seams, but she wears sheer. She isn’t allowed to wear a bathing suit in public, but she becomes a lifeguard. Her parents forbid her to read English library books, but Rachel gets her own library card. She’s a rebel and therefor has a lot of quarrels with her mother and father. She is not stopping just because her parents and religion tell her to quit all the things she loves. She even encourages her sister Leah to join her. Leah says Rachel needs being talked out of things.
Rachel’s dream is being independent, and she hopes she will become it when she gets married. Her future husband isn’t that religious and Rachel thinks that’s a plus. But as the wedding draws nearer, she gets scared. She doesn’t know what will happen. She even thinks about getting divorced as soon as she gets married. But everyone says it’s nonsense and that she’s just nervous. When she’s married, and there’s no way back, she regrets. Her husband acts like her father because he hopes he’ll make up for not being religious enough.
Rachel can’t stand her husband and walks away. She leaves him and after being two days in a big city, she moves back home. She likes it, being divorced and plans never to get married again. She’ll live on her own, happily ever after.
