Als hij nog steeds voor het Uruguayaans elftal speelt moet het inderdaad has played zijn. Denk er om dat je "a football player" (dus met het lidwoord a) gebruikt.

Verder lijkt het me een prima vertaling, behalve dan dat je in het Nederlands zegt dat hij een professionele voetballer is, en in het engels dat hij dat is bij Ajax.
