Een Amerikaanse ruimtesonde is dinsdag langs de dwergplaneet Pluto gevlogen.
Rond 13.50 uur Nederlandse tijd stond de New Horizons het dichtst bij zijn doelwit. De afstand was toen ongeveer 12.500 kilometer. De sonde heeft in bijna tien jaar tijd meer dan 5 miljard kilometer afgelegd.

De komende uren maakt de New Horizons allerlei opnamen van zijn omgeving. Als dat allemaal achter de rug is, stuurt hij als bevestiging een signaal naar de aarde. Dat komt in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag aan bij de vluchtleiding. Pas dan wordt duidelijk wat de New Horizons heeft gezien.
Pluto is de grote onbekende in ons zonnestelsel. De New Horizons is pas de eerste missie naar de dwergplaneet.
