Thoroughbred Athlon XP 2700+
 

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is expected to build business momentum further by introducing the Barton-core Athlon XP processor in October.

Supporting a 333MHz FSB (front-side bus) and 512K cache memory, the 0.13-micron Barton-based Athlon XP offers specifications comparable to those of Intel’s new Pentium 4, AMD said. At present, the processor maker plans to launch two Barton-based products in the fourth quarter.

According to AMD’s original roadmap, the Barton-core processors were positioned to target the low to medium-range market, accompanying the new-generation K8-core products. However, as the K8 processors will not hit the market until sometime later, AMD has seemed to try to maintain its momentum by strengthening specifications of its current K7 platform. Besides introducing the Barton core, the company earlier upgraded the FSB standard of its Athlon XP processors from 266MHz to 333MHz.

Its first FSB 333MHz-supporting processor, the Athlon XP 2700+, is scheduled to be launched on October 7, but this will still adopt the Thoroughbred core with 256K cache memory. The new Barton core will be incorporated into later FSB 333MHz-based products.

With the Thoroughbred Athlon XP 2700+ and later Barton-based products, AMD estimated that 900,000 FSB 333MHz-supporting Athlon XP processors will have reached the market by year-end.

AMD said that it believes it will not encounter significant problems promoting the FSB 333MHz processors, considering an adequate supply of DDR333 memory at present.

Still, to compete against Intel’s P4 platform, AMD said it is planning a series of marketing campaigns, hoping to further raise consumer awareness of what it claims as true performance.

tsja, wat zal ik zeggen,
prima procesor.. no doudt about that.. maar of AMD met deze zet intels 3 gig kan bij benen vraag ik me af. de afgelopen tijd (lees de laatste maanden heeft AMD op het gebied van snelheid erg veel moeten inleveren op intel.
aan het begin van dit jaar was dat nog anders. toen waren de vers gebakken athlons nog top of the market maar nadat intel in overgestapt op hun nortwood core begonnen de rollen zich om te draaien. AMD heeft veel moeite gehad met de over gang naar 0,13 micron en dat heeft ze tijd gekost.
hopelijk lukt het AMD om voor het moment het gat tussen de athlons en de hammer te gaan op vullen.
ik ben benieuwd.. zeker omdat ik het het punt sta om een nieuwe computer aan te schaffen (via's mn pa's pc-prive). waar schijnlijk zal dat toch weer een intel worden. 8 oktober is nog best verweg en voordat die 2700+'en eindelijk in de winkels liggen duurt het vaak ook nog wel even.

komt als het goed is wel in het 4e kwartaal

ja idd hammer is een hele goeie (AMD) het is vergelijkbaar met de intel 3.75 Ghz :cool:

We were able to hit the same clock speed with our Athlon XP 2400+ as we did with the Athlon XP 2600+: 2,304MHz. This time, we needed 1.9V of juice to get it to run with complete reliability. Lower voltages worked as well, but applications would crash from time to time. Rather than stick with the 144MHz bus we utilized in the Athlon XP 2600+ review, we decided to crank the bus up to 153MHz and set the multiplier for 15.0x. This resulted in a final clock speed of 2295MHz, but with the bus running 6% faster we were able to achieve better performance results. In fact, we broke the 300 fps mark in Quake 3!

ehm, waar bazeren jullie die 3,75 op :confused: linkje ??? voor zover ik weet zijn er nog niet echt benchmarks van dat ding. en hij mag dan idd op de originele roadmap geplanned staan voor het 4e kwartaal maar zoals al uit het boven staande aritikel blijkt zijn er wat vertragingen opgetreden. als dit om 1 of twee weken zou gaan lijkt er geen nood voor de barton op dit moment maar AMD denkt daar zelf dus anders over. het zou dus nog wel eventjes kunnen duren voordat de hammer of liever nog opteron in de schappen ligt.
dat laaste bericht snap ik eigenlijk niet helemaal in dit topic.. leuk dat ze hun 2400+ hebben overgeklokt. maar die 300fps is niet echt iets bijzonders.. dat lukt met een goed overgeklokt PIV ook wel. hierbij komt nog eens dat PIV's (zeker de nortwood core erg goe overklokbaar zijn). al met al moet AMD eerst maar eens laten zien hoeveel performance de 333 fsb gaat brengen.
