B.D. and the jester's touch

thou player, thou musician,
thou mightest know who said
it takes a lot to laugh,
it takes a train to cry.

thou protest-singer, folkie,
'twas thee who wrote these words.
'twas thee who took the train to cry
and Desolation Row.

thy voice unschooled and croaking
did bleat rather than sing
thy poetry was never understood
'xcept by the junk -

"Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me"

(ah, now they know!)
but was it not,
in spite of all thy talent
for music, lyric and the like
ONE thing that stood thee out?

what jesters did to their kings
thou didst to thy surroundings.

Respectfully dedicated to the incomprehendible singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, quotes taken from his songs 'It Takes A Lot To Laugh...', 'Desolation Row' and 'Mr Tambourine Man'.
