English question: VIOLENCE and CRIME
 

What effect does violence on television (action/crime films ...) have on people, especially on children? Is there too much violence on TV?

Are our prisons well organised? What's your opinion about our prison system?

Should criminals be sent to prison? What else could society do? Do you see any alternative punishments?

--> If you commit a heavy crime, like a murder, you should be sent to prison. But if it's a light crime, like stealing something small, I think some sort of community service would be a great idea, for example working for free in the shop where you stole . That way, you might see the consequences of thefts, and maybe you won't relapse.

It's just an idea, and my English isn't great, but I hope it's useful!!

I just think that it's not useful to put everyone in prison, that doesn't work anyway. People relapse easyly. That's why I believe in alternative punishment for the most of the people!

By the way: why is this question in English? You live in Bruges (--> profile), so are you really English or do you just need an English answer on your question?

Doe het voor mijn part maar in het Nederlands. Ik ben enkel geïnteresseerd in jullie mening, want ik moet er straks over gaan vertellen in klas: hoe anderen en ikzelf over deze situaties denken...

Violence does have an effect on children. Every study in the past 10 years have confirmed this. I think that it isn't the responsibility of the TV stations but of the PARENTS. They should carefully monitor what children are viewing.

Yes they are well organised. I do think however that our prison system could be privatised to make money of it, as do the Americans.

It's never allright to commit a crime. No matter how small. And, people should be punished. I do think, however, that there isn't enough consideration for the mental state of 'criminals' or people who committed misdemenours(waarschijnlijk helemaal fout gespeld). It should be individually decided through psychological tests how a 'patient' should be punished. Another thing that should be taken into the consideration is the number of times a criminal has committed crime and in what way.
Work-penalties like public service should be used more. Like the Dutch 'Halt' organisation.

Ik vind dat celstraffen moeten veranderen in chirurgische hersenspoelingen. Zijn de crimineeltjes meteen weer klaargestoomd voor de maatschappij, zijn er ook meteen cellen vrij voor asielzoekers ed. Tof toch ?
