Big fun in the big town is een documentaire over de rap-muziek in New York midden jaren tachtig.
Deze week de documentaire Big fun in the Big Town (1986). Bram van Splunteren neemt de toeschouwer mee naar de New Yorkse rapscene van het eerste uur: een bijna verlegen 18-jarige LL Cool J, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC en The Last Poets. Zwarte jongelui die nieuwe muzikale paden insloegen en zich weinig tot niets gelegen lieten liggen aan bestaande muzikale tradities. En alles met de aankleding van grote kapsels, nog grotere brillen en (voor huidige begrippen) ondenkbaar strakke broeken.

Een tweede (korte) film van Van Splunteren gaat over Gangsterrapper Ice T. Rapper, zanger en acteur die als eerste geweld in zijn teksten verheerlijkt.

Die documentaire heb ik gezien, erg tof, zeker omdat Wild Style als één van de weinige documentaires over deze scene werd beschouwd, terwijl Wild Style toch echt een speelfilm is.
