Nasum - Shift , godverdomme !
Nieuw album en label voor de hardste grindband around.
http://www.nasum.com/images/img/shift_cover_250.gif BREAKING NEWS: NASUM SIGNS TO BURNING HEART AND ANNOUNCES FOURTH ALBUM "SHIFT". Finally, after months of keeping it to ourselves and not commenting rumours that have figured out there we can now announce our fourth album "Shift" and our worldwide signing to Burning Heart Records. The album is already recorded (!) but will not be released until mid October (followed by the European tour announced below). All details concerning the signing and the album (including tracklist) are available as this Message from Nasum. We are very exited about "Shift" which probably is the most relentless album recorded by Nasum. It has the fastest parts ever performed by us and a lot of cool hooks and grooves. Those of you who loved all or any of the previous albums will love "Shift". --------------------- BREAKING NEWS: NASUM SIGNS TO BURNING HEART AND ANNOUNCES FOURTH ALBUM "SHIFT". New label With the release of "Shift", Nasum's fourth album, we are leaving Relapse Records as our main label. We are now signing a contract with Burning Heart Records worldwide, excluding Japan where Ritual Records will put out the album. Relapse is still releasing Nasum in the USA on license from Burning Heart. Our contract with Relapse expired and we decided to try something different, and with the basic fact that Europe currently is the biggest market for Nasum and in the aftermath of "Helvete"'s success in Sweden, we figured that a European label, even a Swedish, would be best for Nasum. We've followed the development of Burning Heart Records during the years. They started the label about the same time as Nasum formed and they have been host to many friends of us (Millencolin, The Peepshows, Nine, Voice of a Generation etc) and also released records with bands that have inspired Nasum (Refused and Breach). Just like Relapse, Burning Heart has got a lot of different bands on their rooster with the big exception that Burning Heart would never have Relapse's classic phrase "For a massive catalogue with grindcore, black metal, industrial…" printed on their record sleeves… Burning Heart is not the hardest label out there. They have released records that have absolutely nothing in common with Nasum. Actually, a lot of their records have not much in common with Nasum. The closest to grindcore they've put out is a short (but sweet) blast on the latest Raised Fist album. Still there is a history of raw hardcore in Burning Heart. The founder Peter Ahlqvist release many important records on his Uproar label during the 80's and employee Jallo Lehto is THE Jallo Lehto. But that's all part of the challenge, of the shift. We have full confidence for Burning Heart although they haven't been exploring the harder, more extreme styles of music much earlier. We feel that they have enough experience and engagement to do their best with our music. And it's really, really nice to share the same town as the label… At the same time as we're psyched with the change of labels in Europe, we are very glad to continue working with Relapse in the USA. Without Relapse we wouldn't have come this far, we would not be ready to release our fourth (!) album! And we are also very happy to continue working with Ritual Records in Japan. New album "Shift" wasn't meant to be a "secret" album, but everything went very fast, from the initial meetings with Burning Heart (where we decided to do a mini-CD, which we reconsidered already on the way from the meeting) to the start of the recording. It was just a matter of months. As late as mid March we had still not rehearsed any of the songs (and absolutely not written the major bulk of them yet) that we were supposed to record for the album. And since there were quite a lot of issues concerning our new contract and licensing deals to take care of we decided to break the news about the new album when everything was settled. By then we had already finished the recording sessions. The recording of "Shift" started June 3 and wrapped up July 12. That's a way shorter timeframe than what was used for recording "Helvete". The initial idea was - as stated earlier - to record a mini-CD and to do it a little bit more spontaneous than usually, but in the end "Shift" came out as the most put together recording this far. We went into Soundlab Studios with 32 songs, added one old song (more about that later) and wrote one in the studio. During the basic takes we decided to scrap one song that we clearly hadn't given enough time during the rehearsals. So in the end 33 songs were recorded, 30 were completed and mixed and meant to cover one album and a limited edition 7" to be released by Relapse Records. For the first time we've re-recorded some old songs to be featured on the album (we did - for the record - re-record "Silent sanguinary soil" during the "Human 2.0" session, but it was never finished). When we decided to make a new album instead of a mini-CD we faced the possible problem that we might not have time to write enough new songs and thought of re-recording some of the leftover tracks from the "Helvete" sessions, since they wouldn't be released as they first were meant to be. From those leftover tracks we picked a song called "Fury", written by Mieszko. "Fury" almost made it to "Helvete". It was one of the last song (if not THE last song) to be removed from the tracklist, much to former member Jesper's despair since he in one interview named the track "his favourite". "Fury" was re-arranged and slightly sped up (which was the initial problem with the song) and will now finally be released. During the recording of the drums we decided to re-record "No paradise for the damned", an eight year old song quite poorly presented on the split-7" with Abstain. This song has in some way stayed in our minds ever since 1996. We even planed to use its chorus ("Hear the screams from the dying race") as the title for the mini-CD we were originally going to do for Relapse (before the mini-CD transformed into "Inhale/exhale"). We've talked about adding this song to our live set but never managed to get some of the less audible riffs right. Now we did and "No paradise for the damned" adds a little old school Nasum feeling to the album. About the new songs then - although "Shift" is a title that is closely connected with change and development, you will be able to recognize Nasum. Some stuff might be new in the Nasum universe of sound and some other stuff are reminiscing of our earlier albums (yes, even "Inhale/exhale"!). In general, "Shift" is a very fast and aggressive album with some of the fastest parts ever recorded by Nasum, but as usual there is room for groove and nuances. In other words: classic Nasum grindcore. "Shift" also introduces new members Jon Lindqvist (bass) and Urban Skytt (guitar) both as musicians and songwriters. We are very proud of being a band where all members are involved in the writing process. "Shift" will be released everywhere by Burning Heart (Europe), Relapse (USA) and Ritual (Japan) mid October followed by a four week tour in Europe. ------------------------------- Tracklist for "Shift" 1.
