Tempelberg mogelijk doelwit joodse extremisten

JERUZALEM (ANP) - Israëlische veiligheidsfunctionarissen vrezen dat extremistische joden een aanval op de Tempelberg voorbereiden. De diensten bereiden zich voor op meerdere doemscenario's, waaronder een zelfmoordaanslag met een vliegtuig. Dat heeft de Israëlische krant Haaretz zondag gemeld.

De extremisten zouden ,,doelgericht nadenken'' over een terreuraanslag op de Tempelberg, aldus minister van Openbare Veiligheied Tzachi Hanegbi. De rechts-radicale joden zouden door een opzienbarende aanslag het plan voor de Israëlische terugtrekking uit de Gazastrook willen ondermijnen.

Bronnen binnen veiligheidsorganisaties vertelden de krant dat veiligheidsmaatregelen rond de Tempelberg zo streng zijn dat extremisten een bijzondere manier moeten vinden om een aanslag uit te voeren.

Al-Aqsa moskee

Veiligheidsdiensten bereiden zich daarom onder meer voor op een aanval met een raket vol explosieven of een aanval met een klein vliegtuigje tijdens een drukbezochte gebedsdienst in de beroemde al-Aqsa moskee. Een andere mogelijkheid is dat militante joden een prominente moslimleider willen vermoorden. De Tempelberg is de op twee na belangrijkste plaats binnen de islam.

Extreem-rechtse joden lieten begin juli ook al van zich horen. Fanatieke rabbijnen riepen er toen indirect toe op premier Sharon te doden. Israël verscherpte vervolgens de veiligheidsmaatregelen rond de Israëlische regeringsleider.

Sharon was ooit de lieveling van de joodse kolonisten, maar dat veranderde toen hij begin dit jaar zijn plannen ontvouwde om alle 21 joodse nederzettingen in de Gazastrook voor eind 2005 te verwijderen.

Likud MK Ehud Yatom, who as a former Shin Bet official was one of the commanders of the operation to seize the members of the "Jewish Underground" terror group in 1984, said Sunday that the group was 'very close' to carrying out a planned multiple bombing against Muslim holy sites on the Temple Mount in 1984.
Yatom was responding to a statement by Public Security Minister Tzachi Hanegbi, who confirmed Saturday that the security establishment had identified rising intent among current right-wing extremists to carry out a Temple Mount attack.

Israeli security officials have recently become increasingly concerned that right-wing extremists might be plotting an attack on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to derail Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The Shin Bet security service and the police are preparing for a number of possible terror attack scenarios at the sacred Old City site, Israeli security sources said on Saturday night.

Yatom, speaking on Army Radio, said "We were very close, close as touching blood, to a most serious terrorist bombing, as members of the Underground planted five bombs in five buses, which were then to convey innocent civilians and tourists.

"We were close, very close, to a situation in which people with truly distorted, wicked minds, tried to strike a place very sacred to Muslims on the Temple Mount."

Speaking on the Channel Two "Meet the Press" program Saturday, Hanegbi said: "There is no information about specific individuals, because the Shin Bet and police would not let them continue [with their plot]. But there are troubling indications of purposeful thinking, and not detached philosophy... There is a danger that [extremists] would make use of the most explosive site, in the hope that a chain reaction would bring about the destruction of the peace process."

Security sources on Saturday night said possible actions included an attempt to crash a drone packed with explosives on the Temple Mount, or a manned suicide attack with a light aircraft during mass Muslim worship on the Mount. Other possibilities include an attempt by right-wing extremists to assassinate a prominent Temple Mount Muslim leader, perhaps from the Waqf Islamic trust.

Yehuda Etzion, one of the leaders of a plot in the early 1980s to blow up the mosques on the Temple Mount, said Sunday that blowing up the Dome of the Rock, the gilded mosque at the center of the compound, was a "worthy" goal, but that it was not the proper way to fight the disengagement initiative.

"Losing one's patience after so many years of distortion is something understandable," Etzion told Army Radio. "Is this a worthy act? First of all, it is worthy. On the other hand, it is unworthy as an act to thwart the disengagement."

Israeli security sources speculate that the assassination scenario might be chosen, even though it would not cause mass injury or damage to the Al-Aqsa mosque or the Dome of the Rock. The aim of the Temple Mount attack conspiracy, they said, would be to carry out a visible provocation that sparked violent confrontation in the territories.

According to Hanegbi, "We sense that the level of threat to the Temple Mount from the standpoint of extreme and fanatic Jewish elements carrying out a terrorist attack in order to reshuffle the cards, to serve as a catalyst to a change in the entire political initiative - this level has risen in recent months and more so in recent weeks, more than at any time in the past."

Due to stringent security routines at the Temple Mount, Israeli security officials said Saturday, right-wing extremists would find it virtually impossible to use conventional routes to penetrate the site with explosives. Hence, the possibility of a large bomb being planted at one of the Muslim holy sites is "a lower-level possibility."

Saturday's disclosures about possible Temple Mount terror plans were preceded in recent months by a number of troubling indications. Nine months ago a suspect in a Jewish underground terror group affair, Shahar Dvir-Zeliger, told authorities a prominent West Bank settler activist had planned a Temple Mount attack. Zeliger cited two other names of West Bank settlers, suggesting the two were involved in the Temple Mount attack conspiracy.

Last Thursday, the Temple Mount Faithful group petitioned the High Court, asking to be given clearance to go up to the Holy Site for prayers later this week for Tisha B'Av.

Denk dat de beveiliging wel optimaal is en dat het dus niet gaat gebeuren, maar het feit dat ze het willen doen om de ontmanteling van de gazastrook te verhinderen is absurd. Ik dacht in eerste instantie dat het was vanwege "de doorn in het oog": de moskee op de tempelberg waar ooit de tempel stond.

Kut dat de religies zo onderling verschillen qua rituelen enzo, anders had je lekker onder 1 dak kunnen zitten als mogelijk compromis ;)

Hezbollah warns Israel against extremist attack on Al-Aqsa

BEIRUT - The leader of the Hezbollah militant group, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, warned Israel on Wednesday of the most dire consequences if Jewish extremists were to harm Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

He was commenting on Public Security Minister Tzachi Hanegbi's statement over the weekend that there was a growing threat of such an attack. Hanegbi said he did not know of a specific plot to attack the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound - the third holiest shrine in Islam - but intelligence assessments said the danger of such an action was growing.

Hanegbi said Jewish fanatics might attack the mosque to act as "a catalyst for change to the whole political process."

Nasrallah said on Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV channel: "The Israelis must be made to understand that the destruction of the of the Al-Aqsa Mosque would result in the destruction of the Zionist entity [Israel]."

The Hezbollah chief said the warning had to be taken seriously because it came from "a member of [Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon's right-wing government, which certainly knows what is going on behind the scenes in Zionist extremism."

"We should not wait lazily until the event takes place, and then cry and beat our faces," Nasrallah said. "From today, positions should be taken, and messages sent, that will make them not even dare to think of embarking on such an act."

On Tuesday, police turned back about 30 Jewish zealots trying to enter the Temple Mount compound to mark the Tisha B'Av fast day, saying the act could incite Palestinian violence.

Fearing possible riots, Jerusalem Police Chief Ilan Franco decided Tuesday that Jews would not be allowed on site. The decision includes members of the Temple Mount Faithful group, who requested permission to conduct a ceremony at the holy site.
