Duurste Film tot nu toe?!
 

De remake van War of the Worlds word de meest dure Blockbuster tot nu toe.
Met een budget hoger dan die van Titanic zal het de duurste film (ooit, maar tegenwoordig moet je zeggen) tot nu toe worden, zo gonzen de berichten op Internet. En zelf RTL Boulevard heeft op 6 september het nieuws bekendgemaakt.

Steven Spielberg die deze film zal gaan regieseren wil van dit verhaal de film van het decennium maken, hetgeen dat een moeilijke opgave is gezien de Lord of the Rings Trilogie .
Tom Cruise die de hoofdrol zal gaan spelen in deze film en Steven Spielberg zullen niet betaald worden voordat de film in productie word genomen. Naast Tom Cruise zal ook Dakota Fanning (Cat in the Hat ) een rol krijgen on deze 106 jaar oude Roman van Science Fiction schrijver H.G.Wells . Toch zijn er geruchten dat de film zich niet zoals in het boek in 1898 zal afspelen maar zal worden geupdate voor de moderne tijd.
Hetgeen dat veel War of the Worlds fans al een beetje teleursteld.
Het verhaal word bewerkt door Script-schrijver David Koepp die ook het script voor Jurassic Park heeft geschreven.
Paramount Pictures en Spielberg zullen in november beginnen met filmen.

Goed nieuws.

Hmm, ik had ergens gelezen dat Spielberg ook al de Transformers film zou gaan doen. Een regisseur kan toch niet 2 films tegelijk doen?
Anyway, als hij goed lukt kan niks de Transformers overtreffen in prijs :P

Ik ben heel erg benieuwd.

En het verhaal speelt zich oorspronkelijk natuurlijk in Londen af. Daarom was ik wat teleurgesteld toen het bleek dat Tom Cruise de hoofdrol speelt. Misschien verplaatst Spielberg het verhaal naar New York o.i.d?
Nu ik eenmaal aan dat idee gewend ben is het wel leuk dat Dakota Fanning er in speelt. Die meid kan wel goed acteren naar mijn mening.
Ben ook weer erg benieuwd naar John Williams' soundtrack. :)

Ik herinner me nu weer dat War of Worlds een keer op de radio in een vorm van een hoorspel was (in 1939 oid) en dat vele mensen dachten dat het écht was (tijd geleden ergens gelezen). Maargoed, daar ging dit topic nu niet over ;).

Ik ben benieuwd naar de film, ze moeten er iig wel een heel groot succes van maken wil het zovele andere films overtreffen.

Ik heb er in ieder geval zin in.

Ik hoop er ook op dat de soundtrack door John Williams word gemaakt. Ik denk dat de kans vrij groot is.
Ja, er is idd een Hoorspel geweest dat op Halloween 1938 heel Ameika in zijn greep hield. Het hoorspel werd trouwens door Orson Welles geregiseerd.

Zelf zou ik het een betere move vinden als Spielberg het verhaal in zijn originele jaar 1898. Dit zou de film een stuk dichter bij het boek volgen en ook veel klassieker overkomen.
Maar ik ben sowieso blij dat het eerste echte Science-Fiction verhaal verfilmd word.

Dat is vrijwel zeker. Spielberg wil niemand anders. ;)

Is hier trouwens iemand bekend met de musical uit 1978 van Jeff Wayne? Die heb ik altijd erg sfeervol gevonden. (y)

Was Waterworld niet ook als de duurste film bestempeld? (En tegelijkertijd de grootste flop :D)

Overigens lijkt War Of The Worlds me wel een gaaf boek, ik ga 'm maar eens lezen. En ik ben benieuwd naar de film.

Ik denk dat bijna iedereen die wel kent. :o

Beetje jammer dat Tom Cruise erin speelt. Ook jammer dat het weer de duurste film moet worden. Het meest jammere is nog wel dat het waarschijnlijk niet in dezelfde tijd en plaats af zal spelen als het boek.

H.G. Wells was trouwens niet de eerste persoon die sci-fi schreef, Jules Verne schreef 30 jaar eerder al sci-fi verhalen.

Wat een zinloos project.

Het zal wel. Als 't maar 'n goede film is, en niet zo'n blockbuster met aangepast niveau voor het grote publiek.

Als je op internet zoekt vindt je overigens ook veel sites die beweren dat de 4e harry potter film de duurste ooit wordt... ;)

Ik hoop alleen maar dat het dicht bij het boek blijft.

According to the next director in the Harry Potter franchise, Mike Newell, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be the most expensive movie ever made.

The film, which starts production in April, will cost an estimated £170 million ($308 million), reports the Sunday Mail. That's £5 million ($10 million) more than the entire Lord of the Rings series.

Trouwens, ik vind het raar dat LOTR zo "weinig" heeft gekost, minder dan 100 miljoen per film! Dat is toch niet veel voor zo'n enorm project :confused:

Opnames waren Nieuw Zeeland. Visuele effecten door Weta gemaakt niet. Vele andere "eigen bedrijven" opgestart voor het maken van props en kostuums. Opnames in 1 keer. Geen main-stream acteurs. Dat drukt allemaal de kosten.

Samen met Tim Burton's Charlie and The Chocolate Factory & Episode III een van de meest geänticipeerde films voor volgende zomer.

Die is trouwens ook heel goed. De regiseur Goerge Pal regisseerde in 1960 ook de film 'The Timemachine' dat ook op een wereldberoemd boek van H.G.Wells is gebasseerd.

Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS heet nu blijkbaar OUT OF THE NIGHT, volgens de filmsite comingsoon.net.

Opnames gaan in november van start.

Dutch distributor UIP is reporting that the anticipated Paramount adaptation of H.G. Well's 1889 novel, The War of the Worlds, is now going by a new title - "Out of the Night". The Steven Spielberg-directed film, starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, is slated for a Summer 2005 release date.

Besides the studio actually renaming the film (which would probably lead to a negative fan reaction), several other things can be happening instead.

The movie starts shooting in November and "Out of the Night" could be its title during production, to keep unwanted guests away from set locations, among other things. Also, movies are often named differently overseas, which could be another possibility.

The studio had no comment on the "Out of the Night" title.

Dus het hoeft nog niet per se.
Wel opvallend is dat op comingsoon.net niets word gezegd van een modernisering van het verhaal. Zelf vind ik Out of the Night geen slechte titel. Maar ik denk dat Stevie zich deze maar in z'n achterhoofd moet houden voor een andere film.
Niets is beter dan War of the Worlds. Trouwens ILM gaat de Special Effects voor WOTW zorgen dus we krijgen mooie shots dat is zeker.

Misschien een hele rare vraag, maar waar gaat het eigenlijk over? Wat is het plot/verhaal?

Ik vind Dead London zeer goed, al weet ik zo niet of die naam klopt. De twee-na-laatste is het iig.

later worden er groene vallende sterren gezien. Tenminste men denkt dat het vallende sterren zijn.
Tot dat er één inslaat op Horsell Common. De vallende ster blijkt een cillinder te zijn waarin een klein leger van Marsbewoners zich voorbereiden voor de invasie van de Aarde, ten beginne met Groot Brittanië.
De verteller (er word nooit gezegd wie hij nou eigenlijk is) vlucht voor de overwinnende Marsbewoners die in hun driepotige Srijdmachines het Britse leger volledig onder de voet hebben gelopen.

Later blijkt dat de Marsbewoners niet alleen naar de Aarde zijn gekomen om van hun stervende planeet te vluchten maar dat ze ook de mensheid voor een ander doel nodig hebben.
De verteller moet zich niet alleen verzetten tegen de afschuwelijke beelden van de invasie maar ook tegen zijn eigen waanzin.
Maar net als alle hoop verdwenen schijnt te zijn doet de natuur zijn intrede en de Marsbewoners worden niet gestuit door menselijk vernuft maar door een oude natuurwet.

Spielberg beaten to War of the Worlds by secretly shot English rival

Pendragon Pictures surprise Spielberg with shock new movie based on H.G. Wells novel.

In news fit to set Steven Spielberg's hair on end, Pendragon Pictures has just announced the completion of principal photography on their take of H.G. Wells' The War Of The Worlds. Set in Wells' intended turn-of-the-century English locale, the movie is the world's first authentic adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic 1898 novel.

The live-action production, lensed in complete security under the cover title The Great Boer War, taking two and a half months to complete on location in England and the Pacific Northwest. The picture wrapped almost three years to the date when Pendragon's original updated version of War Of The Worlds was shut down due to the events of September 11th.

Director Timothy Hines reflected to the 'Nest, "We never stopped really. After an initial two-week hiatus, we saw the light in adapting a dead-on accurate version of The War Of The Worlds from the original source material, thanks to the influence and advice of people such as Charles Keller, the director of the H.G. Wells Society and tens of thousands of fans who wrote us."

A script was immediately begun as the production company shot out a sci-fi movie about robot slaves called Chrome, in order to protect their resources.

The War Of The Worlds has been a labor of love for the principals at Pendragon. "We haven't rushed anything," producer Susan Goforth told the 'Nest. "Every period detail has been painstakingly and carefully researched over the last three years as we developed the project."

Co-producer John Gallo added, "Timothy wanted everything to be right, as the fans' expectations are enormous. Like Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings, Timothy is a deep fan of The War Of The Worlds. He's been planning to make the movie for decades. The research was grueling and information was sometimes extremely difficult to obtain, such as finding the right class of ship the Thunderchild would have been. But it was worth it. In the end, Tim's vision proved to be right. The movie is detail perfect."

The cast is packed with highbrow actors, such as Jack Clay, founder of the first Professional Actor's Training Program at Southern Methodist University, upon which virtually all other collegiate programs are based. Jack Clay was the acting teacher of many phenomenal talents, such as Academy award-winning actress Kathy Bates and Val Kilmer's opponent in Tombstone, Powers Boothe.

"We didn't have a jillion dollars," an amused Hines told SFcrowsnest, "But our budget is not embarrassing as we're in eight figures. We certainly could afford movie stars. But I felt dubious about casting huge movie stars like, when, for our first version, we negotiated with Michael Caine, Charlize Theron and Eric Stoltz. The Hollywood agents' methods of negotiation are frustrating and enigmatic to me. Like when Michael Caine's agent claimed at one point to have never spoken with me.

"When I showed her a pile of faxes and emails between us, she had an assistant call me back and confirm, 'Yes, we are talking.' Instead, we turned to the world's greatest undiscovered talent. For the main protagonist we auditioned twelve hundred and, ironically, found him in our own back yard in the form of Anthony Piana, who portrays the sociopathic Colonel Zet in Chrome. I believe Anthony is the next Al Pacino. His level of commitment and talent is like no actor I've ever seen."

Other cast members include James Lathrop as the Artilleryman and John Kaufmann as the Curate.

In response to fans' concerns about the polish and punch of the special effects, Hines was quick to comment, "We have the best and brightest talent in the FX department. The War Of The Worlds is such a known entity that we didn't have to seek them out. They came to us with enthusiasm and a deep desire to be involved. Budget and fees has not been a concern to these people. They are fans, like myself, and are creating this picture with love and integrity. Our effects will be state-of-the-art. We are utilizing both CGI and miniatures as well as many full-scale mechanical effects that were already shot out on set. Besides, the fans can go to our website and check out our movie trailer for Chrome if they have fears."

Concerning the announced Spielberg/Cruise production, Timothy Hines is philosophical, "We communicated with the principals at Paramount before 9/11. They acknowledged in writing through their attorneys that we can make our picture. At that time an Executive producer on Dreamworks' The Time Machine invited us to his home in Las Vegas, where he informed us that Tom Cruise had aspirations to make the picture. They essentially all told us to go away. Since then, many friends and allies of Tom Cruise have communicated to us the same sentiment.

"Now that they have announced that they are doing a modern version, I think there's room for both our productions to exist. What they are doing sounds interesting. From what I understand, they are changing the story dramatically, whereas we have point-by-point recreated the book for the screen. Our production of The War Of The Worlds is set at the turn-of-the-century. We're almost a back story to their version, sort of like a prequel."

As to the planned Jeff Wayne animated version of The War Of The Worlds, the Pendragon principals were repeatedly approached by Wayne's representatives to work out some form of collaboration, but nothing came of the communications. "I think the Wayne production should be a lot of fun," says Hines. "There's room for us all. Wells was a mega-talent and an incredible visionary. I'm sure the staying power of his Martian invasion story helped bring NASA more hits to their website than any in history when they landed their robot on Mars. Wells would likely have been amused by all the interest in his work. I'm proud to be the first to accurately bring H.G. Wells' The War Of The Worlds to the screen."

Pendragon Pictures expects a spring 2005 release for H.G. Wells' The War Of The Worlds, however the exact date will be announced by Pendragon's distributor at MIPCOM this October.

Ah, stiekem toch gefilmd. Toendertijd was er veel nieuws over, maar werd het afgeblazen inverband met de terroristische aanslagen.

Hee, dat klinkt ook helemaal niet slecht :)

ZE zullen ALLES doen om Stevens Spielberg film als eerste te tonen, want geen enkele normale mens gaat eendezelfde film 2 keer zien, buiten de fans! Trouwens ik denk toch dat de mensen zouden wachten op de film van SS juist omdat hij het is & Tom Cruise.

Liever een trouwere versie dan een gemoderniseerde.

Ik vind er niets bijzonders aan. Ik heb de trailer van Chrome bekeken en het is erg B film. De CGI en andere effecten zien er niet echt mooi uit, dus ik denk dat Spielberg weinig te vrezen heeft van de onbekende Timothy Hines.

Het is niet eenendezelfde film, de Spielberg/Cruise film zal een gemoderniseerd worden. Het zal zich afspelen in de Bayonne streek in de VS. De geruchten van de titelverandering zijn allemaal vals. Het word dus gewoon 'War of the Worlds' en niet 'Out of the Night'.

De film van Timothy Hines, lijkt me wel een goede film. Iemand heeft hier net gepost dat het een B-film zal worden maar dat betwijfel ik. Hines heeft zelf bekend gemaakt dat er men over de special effects niets te vrezen heeft.

Zelf zou ik twee WotW films niet gek vinden.

Regisseur Timothy Hines, waar nog nooit iemand van gehoord heeft zegt dat de effecten goed zullen zijn en jij gelooft hem. Bekijk zelf eens die trailer van Chrome, zo'n film van 10 miljoen kan echt niet op tegen één van Spielberg met een budget van honderden miljoenen.

Geef ze een kans. Ze hebben de opnames van hun productie heel goed geheim kunnen houden voor het publiek.
En ze hebben de film voor 99% volgens het boek gemaakt.
Dat vind ik al genoeg. En als jullie alleen maar naar zo'n film gaan voor de Special Effects dan zullen jullie die film ook niet zo graag zien, toch?!

Niet qua setdesign en speciale effecten, maar waarom zou een film met een klein budget niet veel beter kunnen zijn dan die met een groot budget?

Volgens mij bedoelde hij ook alleen qua special effects.

Overigens kunnen big budget films ook qua special effects onderdoen aan goedkoper gemaakte films, omdat ze gebruik maken van belachelijk uitziende digitale effecten. Vergelijk maar eens de weerwolfen in 'An American Werewolf in London' en 'Van Helsing'.

Inderdaad. En gezien het een Spielberg film is zal het er toch sowieso wel goed uitzien.
