Death Side
![]() To me, Death Side is the quintessential Japanese hardcore band. They've got it all: the barreling, Motorhead-inspired rhythm section, the Iron Maiden-style lead guitar riffs and of course the "Discharge meet the New York Dolls in a back alley" look. This band was completely essential right from the get-go; their early EPs and compilation appearances were absolutely scorching, and as the band developed (and in particular as the chops of lead guitarist Chelsea grew) their attack only became more refined and intense, culminating with their incredible two full-lengths, Wasted Dream and Bet On the Possibility. After the demise of Death Side all four members went on to incredible projects. Lead guitarist Chelea is now in Paintbox, who are one of the most recognizable bands in the current scene. Drummer Muka-Chin is now in the more metallic Judgement and vocalist and bassist Ishiya and You have gone on to form the phenomenal Forward. All three of these bands are very much worth checking out. Discography: Bet on the Possibility LP Wasted Dream LP The Will Never Dies CD reissue of EPs and comp tracks Total Fury ![]() Total Fury, like Disclose, display the Japanese's incredible ability to mimic. However, whereas Disclose work from the raw, brutal thrash of bands like Discharge, Total Fury seek to recreate as faithfully as possible the sound of Washington, DC circa 1981. Amazingly, they succeed better than pretty much any other band who has tried this sound, forging a style that is as lightning-fast, melodic, heavy and engaging as anything on the Flex Your Head comp. As of their Committed to the Core 7", though, Total Fury has moved more toward the raw, heavier Boston hardcore sound of bands like SS Decontrol and DYS. It remains to be seen where in the history of hardcore Total Fury's next record will take them. Discography: Spring Thrash 7" Split 7" with Grissle Split 7" with the Oath 13 Songs LP Committed to the Core 7" Disclose ![]() In case you couldn't tell by the band's name, their logo, their sound or even by the fact that they faithfully reproduced the back cover of the Realities of War EP for their Nightmare or Reality 12", Kochi-City's Disclose really, really like Discharge. Maybe it's just my pro-Japanese bias, but of all of the American and European groups who have attempted to recreate Discharge's sound over the years I think that Disclose has been the most successful. While I haven't heard very much of their extensive discography, their Nightmare or Reality LP in particular is like a full-length expansion of Discharge's first EP, an absolutely blistering thrash attack that will leave burn marks on those who haven't become accustomed to such intense sounds. Listening to Disclose is like sitting in the midst of a nuclear explosion, debris flying past you so quickly, so intensely and at such a high volume that all you can do is sit there and let it wash over you. While Disclose is hardly representative of the larger, more traditional Japanese hardcore scene they are undeniably one of the best bands in the world playing this sound, thus if you have any tolerance at all for this kind of D-beat hardcore Disclose are a mandatory listen.
