Succes ![]() |

My presentation is about the Alquin text The long game. It’s about the American sports world were black people are still discriminated. Until the first half of last year, black people were held back in a lot off professional sports games in America. To start off I will give you a short summary of this article. I'll start with some examples of black sportsmen who are discriminated.
The first example is the boxer Jack Johnsen. He is the first black world heavyweight champion, but in the end/after all he couldn’t win the belt because the reigning champion refused to fight against a black man. The second example is about another boxer called Joe Louis. When he defeated Primo Carnera in 1935. A sportswriter described the champion as ‘something sly and sinister and perhaps not quite human… out of the African Jungle'. The next example is about sprinter Jesse Owens. He won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin, but he ended his career as a circus attraction, racing against horses, because nobody was willing to offer him a good contract. An example to contrict all of these above is Tiger Woods. He is the most famous golfer nationwide and even worldwide and the best earning sportsman of the world. His impact on golf cannot be exaggerated . Because of him, more black people are playing a game that for too long tried to exclude people of color. They were banning them from joining clubs and from taking part in competitions. Larry Bird, a white basketball star said that there should be more white superstars in the NBA because ‘the majority of fans are white’. Many black players took this as a sign of disrespect. There is also a big prejudice that says that white athletes succeed because of willpower while black athletes succeed because of physical qualities and God-given natural ability. A columnist for the New York Times wrote ‘Natural athlete has become a genteel way to say nigger’. This belief has been the biggest barrier keeping African-Americans from leadership roles on and off the field. Nowadays, not even 60 years after segregation ended there are only a few black sports men in American national teams. For example; no black American has ever qualified as a swimmer for the Olympics and only seven out of over450 at the national swimming trials are black. This has to do with the expense and the shortage of trainings facilities in urban areas. In my opinion this is not a good development. I think that black people should have the same possibilities as white people, but a big problem is that the don’t have the money to use good facilities. This was my presentation
