Wat vinden jullie van het nieuwe album van Metallica?
Release date was gister, maar het was al op 2 september op internet te downloaden door een lek. Ik vind het album echt strak  Een stuk beter dan St. Anger!Dit zijn de liedjes: Citaat:

Dat het beter dan St. Anger is mag duidelijk zijn. Van tevoren werd ik lekker gemaakt met het bericht dat we weer terug in de tijd konden gaan naar MoP. Ik had van tevoren ook wel kunnen weten dat dat niet mogelijk is. Voor de rest is het een aardig album.

Het album is beter dan St. Anger, maar dat was ook niet zo moeilijk.
Voor de rest vind ik het album wel aardig, echter ook langdradig. De nummers hadden naar mijn mening vaker wat korter gekund. Nu zit je soms minuten naar hetzelfde riedeltje te luisteren, totdat er eindelijk een moment komt dat je iets origineels hoort. Maar ja, aan de andere kant ben je dan ook blij om dat te horen Ik vind het niet echt een album om op je gemak naar te luisteren, maar ik kan mij wel voorstellen dat ze hiermee gaan scoren tijdens live optredens. Verrast ben ik eigenlijk door The Unforgiven III. Nooit gedacht dat Metallica weer met een mooie ballad zou komen!

A short-short recap on how making albums work. In the recording studio, the artists will assemble and record their songs. Then the songs are mixed into a final mix. Finally, the album is sent to the mastering engineer for final mastering. There’s a lot more involved in making commercial albums, but that’s the quickie explanation.
The mastering engineer for the CD version of D-Mag was Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound. He wrote an email to a concerned fan, who then posted it to the Metallica forums: “I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.” Death Magnetic appears to have been ruined in the final mixing stage. It’s here that all the songs were heavily compressed, peak limited, and otherwise turned into static mush. That’s where all the problems lie. That would normally be the end of the saga, aside from our grumbling of the latest casualty of the music industry’s insipid loudness wars. But suddenly a new wrinkle appeared from an unlikely source: the video game Guitar Hero. Metallica made its new album available for play on Guitar Hero the same day as the commercial album’s release. Because of the game’s development time, Neversoft, GH’s creators, were given tapes that preceded the final mix. Put simply, they have a second mix of the album. This is a stunning surprise, one that will in all likelihood save this album. The GH mix contains none of the heavy compression of the CD or LP versions. None of the squashing, none of the squeezing of the sounds. None of the painful jabs into your ears. Dynamic range is present in the songs. Quiet moments in songs like Unforgiven III and The Day That Never Comes are quiet, and the loud parts are loud. This is a completely different album than the version the mixing engineer destroyed. The next question is rather obvious. When will somebody rip the GH mix so we can listen on our iPods? It’s really only a matter of time. We’ll have to troll through the internet for the fan mixes. Even better lies the possibility of fan-made mixes of D-Mag. This is possible because Neversoft was given the separate tracks for their game. When you miss notes in the game, the guitar cuts out, but the rest of the band continues. This means Neversoft managed to create an album mix of their own, while also retaining the separate channels. I don’t know about you, but I would love to tinker around and create my own D-Mag mix. Even this idea isn’t a new one; Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor recently made his latest raw tracks available to the fans, so they could create their own custom mixes. In our internet age, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see more of this in the future. Games like Guitar Hero point to the future of pop music interacting with fans in new ways. All of which points back to Metallica. In a perfect world, the band would deal directly with the terrible mixes on their new album. It really is terrible, and I remain speechless that such shoddy work would be released to the general public. If we are correct, that all the problems lie in that final mix, then this is a problem we can easily solve. I would prefer that Metallica themselves handle this. After all, it’s their album. But if that doesn’t happen, we the fans are more than ready to step in. If that happens, expect “the Guitar Hero mix” to become the stuff of rock legend, like that original mono mix of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Hebben de boys de final master niet geluisterd ofzo alvorens ze die shit in de schappen legde? Toch frappant hoe de gemiddelde metalband met een louzy budget een oneindig veel beter eindproduct kan afleveren dan de bedragen en namen die hier mee gemoeid zijn. Genant./

Zeker niet. Al dat gezever altijd. Alsof je automatisch een goede plaat maakt als je wat ideeen en trucs hergebruikt uit je hoogtijdagen met saaie non-memorabele riffs en structuren en het totale gebrek aan coherente songwriting en goede hooks/zanglijnen.

Vele malen slechter. Wat dit album wel doet in tegenstelling tot St.Anger, is gewoon normale songs proberen te leveren. Maar, hoe ok het allemaal gewoon klinkt, het mist echt iets. Ik denk dat het ook te maken heeft met urgentie. Zelfs ten tijde van TBA was de creativiteit nog oprecht, en was het een artistieke noodzaak om het album zo te maken als ze deden. Nu heb je echt het idee dat Metallica het eigenlijk prima zou vinden om niets nieuws meer op te nemen, maar dat ze het nu eenmaal maar doen omdat het van ze verwacht wordt, en tja, je moet toch wat als je al driedubbel binnen bent? En zo klinkt het ook: het is niet slecht, want Metallica heeft nou eenmaal veel in huis, maar het is ongeinspireerd en idd een soort retrovergaarbak van alles wat ze hebben gedaan. Vroeger dacht ik dat dat dé ideale weg was voor Metallica: de melodie en songwriting combineren met het aggressieve en epische van MOP days. Maar in de praktijk blijkt het gewoon echt voorbij te zijn: Metallica zal nooit meer urgent zijn.

Daar ben ik het niet helemaal mee eens, Death Magnetic heeft voor mij een veel hogere interessewaarde als TBA. De nummers van death magnetic vind ik vele male interresanter om te beluisteren dan van the black album, en niet alleen maar omdat het ingewikkelder klinkt.
Ik moet wel toevoegen dat ik TBA een best redelijk album vind, maar als ik kijk naar hoe goed ik dit album vind, dan moet ik hem toch in de buurt van AJFA zetten, die toch ver boven TBA staat. maarja, dat is mijn mening

Ik hoor nog liever Load dan St. Wanker en deze laatste draak. Je kunt ervan vinden wat je wilt, maar ten tijden van Load leek het er tenminste nog op dat ze precies deden waar ze zin in hadden en dat ze songs speelde die ze wilde spelen.

Apart genoeg vind ik dat dit album qua (gitaar)sound in tegenstelling wat veel gezegd wordt eigenlijk wel goed aansluiten bij Load. Voor het begrip 'metallica' was dat dan wel een slecht album, ik kon me er goed mee vermaken.
Afgezien van het gruwelijke kutte drumgeluid en af en toe de vocalen van monsieur Hetfield heb ik met de sound van deze schijf niet al te veel problemen. Het kan inderdaad beter, maar ach ik ben wel wat gewend. De nummers zijn geen krakers (al vind ik 'The Day that never Comes' erg goed te doen), maar ze luisteren wel redelijk goed weg imo. Af en toe zaagt het wat te lang door, maar gelukkig nooit zo erg als op St. Anger. Ach, bij een band met zo'n geschiedenis als Metallica kun je al van tevoren verwachten dat het niet meer zulke krakers kan leveren als vroeger (welke band van 20 jaar hoort nu geen gezeik van 'vroeger was het beter'), wellicht dat de schijf me daarom behoorlijk meevalt.

Thinks of Death Magnetic There is a reason why Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are such epic albums. The reason is Cliff Burton. To quote James Hetfield: "We never would have written guitar harmonies or instrumentals or songs with very intricate melodies and orchestrations without Cliff". Burton died, and ...And Justice For Alll has always sounded like a desperate attempt of trying to maintain their level of musicianship but ending up into way too many riffs and weird timed breaks. The most melodic song on that record, 'To Live Is To Die', actually consists of Burton's left over riffs, and the rest of the album is Hetfield and Ulrich over-doing everything to make up for the lack of Burton. Metallica, who basically reduced to a hard-rock outfit on The Black Album (thanks, Bob Rock?), tried to win back the old school fans with the so called "uncompromising" St. Anger in the new milennium; and we all know how that ended up.. (again, thanks, Bob Rock?). Death Magnetic saw the entrance of famed producer Rick Rubin, who ended up letting the band do their thing and just making remarks like "I dont like this, change that a little". To me, Death Magnetic sounds like Metallica having an excellent time writing and recording a metal album. It still has an abundancy of riffs and transitions that are the result of the main writing duo not being able to say 'this is enough' and polishing the things that they have. I always wondered why they never worked with Fleming Rasmussen again. If you had been putting your money on a new Master of Puppets you have put your money on the wrong horse; this horse is older, not as tight and creative as it used to be. Tracks like 'All Nightmare Long', the instrumental 'Suicide & Redemption' and openingtrack 'This Was Just Your Life' are some of the best things this band has done since their Black Album effort, maybe even since ...And Justice For All' if you are a metal purist. 'My Apocalypse' is the fastest song they have written in almost 20 years time. Some of the tracks do have their 'filler' moments and could have used some trimming, but they never become a torment like on St. Anger. It does boggle my mind why the productionvalues on this album are only a slight improvement compared to their much discussed previous album, but it sure is an improvement. In the end, Death Magnetic is one of the better Metallica albums. The band will never reach the level of songwriting they had in the 80s, but if they can write a few more Death Magnetics I`ll be a happy Metallica fan

Tja, je hebt fans en je hebt fans...
Ik persoonlijk hou van Metallica, maar ik hoef er daarom nog niet aan herinnerd te worden, telkens ik naar het toillet ga. IK heb de nieuwe nog nuiet beluisterd, maar gezien hij blijkbaar beter is dan St. Anger, zal ik hem misschien wel eens proberen. Ik zou eigenlijk wel eens willen terugkomen op St. Anger: St. Anger is in essentie een topplaat... ... dir afschuwelijk is afgewerkt.In alle 11 nummers van St. Anger hoor ik wel iets prachtig hoor. Maarja, de drums zijn slecht, het gitaarwerk is niet gepoleist, de nummers klinken zenuwachtig... Ik heb bij het luisteren van St. Anger constant het gevoel gehad te luisteren naar de Demo van een getalenteerd bandje dat net voor de eerste keer was samengekomen... Nu, ik heb achteraf op hun documentaire, Some kind of, gezien dat dit dus de bedoeling was, dusja... Het heeft gewekt. Maar ze hadden wel niet zoveel mogen kijken naar wat Nu-Metal en Metalcore groepen doen. Sommige nummers op St. Angers leden toch echt wel onder het feit datm en opzettelijk zwaarder speelde dat het nummer nodig had...

Geen slechte plaat hôr. Eindelijk klinken die drums weer! Kut-Hetfield kan nog steeds niet zingen. Solo's zijn ook terug (klinken nog steeds herkenbaar/hetzelfde).
Track 1 doet me gelijk denken aan Battery... hmm. Track 2 hoor ik Sad but True maar dan anders, hmm hmm. Kwalitatief een puike band die duidelijk nog wel wat kan, maar vooral niet moet vernieuwen. Al met al een fijne wegluisterplaat. Even een btw: heb die drummer van Trivium bezig gezien met zo'n masterclass... ik wist niet dat mensen konden roffelen op hun base. WOW! Trivium is ook gay neem ik aan, DreadNation?
