Louie Bellson, born July 6, 1924 as Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni, passed away this past Saturday, February 14th, at the age of 84.

Bellson, a legendary Italian-American jazz drummer, was known as a composer, arranger, bandleader, and jazz educator, and has been credited with pioneering the use of two bass drums.

An internationally-acclaimed artist who has performed in most of the major capitals around the world. With the exception of Bob Hope, Louie Bellson, along with his late wife, actress and singer Pearl Bailey, holds the second highest number of White House appearances.
