Crass was de eerste band bij wie de boodschap belangrijker was dan het medium.
De groep bestond uit een achttal anarchisten en pacifisten, dat samenleefde in een macrobiotische commune op het Britse platteland. Dat laatste maakte ze natuurlijk verdacht voor een grote groep punks, die communes in het algemeen en macrobiotische communes in het bijzonder zagen als een uitting van de door hun zo gehaatte hippiecultuur. Daartegenover stond de grote schare aanhangers die zich aangetrokken voelde door het verbeten radicalisme van de groep. Crass opereerde als een paramilitaire outfit: de bandleden droegen zwarte uniformen wat hen op verdenking van fascistische gedachtes kwam te staan. Maar het tegendeel was waar, want Crass was: anti-staat, anti-religie, anti-militaristisch, anti-kapitalischtisch, en propageerde anarchisme, feminisme, vegetarisme, en (niet geheel onbelangrijk) zelfwerkzaamheid!
