Scorching Hot News!: UT2004 Is Official! 5.13.03 [6:04pm] by Tycho

Hmm, I wasn't expecting to be able to talk about this until Friday but you heard it at Unreal Ops first!. Looks like I was wrong. Here is another Unreal News bombshell!

LOS ANGELES - May 13, 2003 - Atari is bringing Unreal® Tournament 2004, the newest edition of the definitive virtual blood sport, to personal computers this Fall. Unreal Tournament 2004, like its predecessors, is being co-created by Epic Games Inc. and Digital Extremes. The game will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, May 14 - 16, in Petree Hall, room 4003.

"Unreal Tournament 2004 is the next evolution of the greatest competitive computer game ever created," said Jean-Philippe Agati, senior vice president and general manager of Atari's Los Angeles studio. "The addition of new modes, mods and maps as well as the controllable land-, air- and space-based vehicles, means Unreal fans are getting an entirely new experience featuring devastating vehicular combat and wide scale warfare."

Key features of the game include:

Assault Mode: The much heralded single-player oriented gametype returns with all-out battles with land, space and air-based vehicles on the home worlds of various Unreal Tournament 2004 combatants. In one scenario, players will experience the adrenaline rush of space-based battle while attacking or defending a Skaarj mother ship. Another scenario takes place on Xan Kriegor's mechanical home world where players attack or defend a robot construction factory. There are currently six Assault scenarios planned to ship with the game.

Onslaught Mode: New multi-player oriented combat game type on custom-built large-scale maps featuring awesome new weapons and land- and air-based vehicles. From the lethal bomber to the nefarious spider mines - players will work as teams to control map points and win the conflict. There are currently nine Onslaught maps planned to ship with the game.

Live voice chat over LAN and internet with 3D audio (on supported sound cards) so players can sense where voices emanate from. Using a microphone and headset (not included), players can communicate with teammates and buddies or just yell at everybody who gets in their way! Several settings are provided to allow users to customize their voice chat experience.

Fan-favorite Unreal characters will return to challenge in the tournaments, including the Skaarj, the Necris and the infamous Xan Kriegor.

The game will include 20 never-before-seen maps for the existing game types, featuring tons of new textures, new static meshes and new music. It's a field day for mod makers! Also included are new maps from Digital Extremes designed specifically to appeal to "hardcore" UT players.

In total, Unreal Tournament 2004 will ship with more never-before-seen maps than the entire number of maps that shipped with Unreal Tournament 2003!

UnrealTV match broadcast system will allow for hundreds of people to view an Unreal Tournament 2004 match with minimal performance impact on game server. UnrealTV will be fully integrated into the server browser to make it easy to located broadcasted matches.

Complete end-user voting system that will allow users to choose game type, maps, mutators, rules and settings and will also provide the ability to remove troublesome players from the game. Custom clan-match voting system will allow clans to negotiate acceptable game settings prior to a competitive match.

Unreal Tournament 2004 users will be able to join games on Unreal Tournament 2003 servers.

A completely redesigned user interface (UI) will be easier to navigate and support context-sensitive menus, an in-game login menu (to improve team balancing) and an improved server browser with enhanced server filtering options. The underlying user interface system has been reengineered to be easier for Mod authors to build menus and implement their own UI designs.

Tons of cool gameplay tweaks and refinements including unique crosshairs for each weapon, the ability to carry dual Assault Rifles, improved computer-controlled "Bot" team coordination and movement, network bandwidth usage optimizations and more!

In addition to the new modes, maps, characters, vehicles and improvements, Unreal Tournament 2004 includes all of the content from Unreal Tournament 2003 plus the two free bonus packs released by Digital Extremes and Epic Games.

Klinkt cool.

We'll see.

allemaal true

Ben benieuwd dus..

lijkt mij wel lachen
assault, vehicles, hardcore maps
zie t wel zitten

vraag me af wat ze met de prijs gaan doen
moeten wij als ut2k3 bezitters weer de volle mep betalen?
of krijgen we korting?

------------------

One of our first stops this morning once the doors to E3 were officially opened was the Atari booth, where Mark Rein and other members of the development team at Epic were showing off a quite polished-looking version of Unreal Tournament 2004--which was only announced yesterday and is currently scheduled for release this fall. In addition to a lot of brand new content, Unreal Tournament 2004 will include Unreal Tournament 2003 and just about every patch and piece of bonus content ever released for it.

The most significant additions to the game are two new gameplay modes, namely Onslaught and Assault--which is making a welcome return after a period of absence, although with plenty of enhancements. UT 2004's Assault mode will feature a minimum of six different scenarios when the game is released, and the one that we got to see at the beginning of our demonstration was quite unlike anything we've ever seen in an Unreal game before. Playing as a human, the mission was to infiltrate a Scar space station by first making it past the defenses into the core in a small craft, and then getting out on foot once safely inside. When you're in control of a vehicle in UT 2004 you'll have the option of playing in either first- or third-person mode--for the purposes of the demo the sequence was shown in third-person, which served to show off some of the subtle animations of the ship itself as its speed changed. When playing as the Scar and defending the station on this level you'll have the option to man gun turrets on both the exterior and interior, patrol areas of the station on foot, or even head down to hangar and grab yourself a Scar attack craft to indulge in a bit of dogfighting.

The Onslaught game mode is, according to Mark Rein, a lot like Capture the Flag in most respects--except that rather than capturing an object and returning it to your own base you'll simply be attempting to destroy it. There will be at least nine levels designed specifically for Onslaught in UT 2004, and if the level we were shown is an indication of what to expect from them, they'll be huge. The expansive exterior level we saw was more than a little reminiscent of one of Halo's multiplayer levels only a lot bigger, and with more impressive base structures at either end. In addition to turret defenses, each base contained a number of parked vehicles that the guys from Epic couldn't wait to show off. First up was a skimmer, which, like many of the things in Onslaught, brought Halo multiplayer to mind. A one-man craft, the skimmer is a high speed, lightly armored hovering vehicle that is complemented by a second, as yet unnamed flying attack craft that purportedly handles in much the same way as a helicopter. Other vehicles that we got to see in action included a tank, a three-man buggy with a fixed gun position in the back, and a one-man buggy in which you'll be able to shoot in any direction whilst driving.

Of course, with all of these vehicles racing around you're going to want some new weapons to defend yourself with if you find yourself on foot, and Epic isn't planning to disappoint. Sticky mines provide a fairly obvious way to target vehicles in the game, but the new spider-mines are far more inventive, and promise to be a lot more fun. Once fired, these eight-legged explosives land on the ground and will scamper towards any enemy in their range or, if no enemies are nearby, will sit tight and wait for one to get close enough. One potentially devastating tactic demonstrated to us this morning is to leave a whole bunch of them in areas of tall grass in which they're practically invisible.

Although the game was demonstrated to us on a really powerful PC with hardware acceleration, Epic was eager to point out that the game will definitely support software rendering when it ships. UT 2004 will also feature voice support so that you can communicate effectively with your teammates or glean more satisfaction from mocking fallen opponents, although we didn't actually get to see this feature in action unfortunately.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is currently scheduled for release sometime this fall. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.

---------

Hi folks,

Sorry I have not been able to visit the forum sooner but we've been extremely busy showing off UT2004 during the day and then meeting with licensees and potential licensees at night.

The reception to UT2004 has been great which is especially gratifying considering how early everything is. There are so many cool things going into UT2004 that aren't in showable shape yet. But regardless of that people are really liking the parts they're seeing and we know they're going to be even more delighted in a few months when everything comes together.

I see many of you are discussing the topic of UT2004 pricing. Atari has not yet set the retail price of UT2004 however they have told us that all along they've been planning to have some sort of deal for existing UT2003 owners who buy UT2004. The game is still many months away so there's plenty of time to figure this out and let people know.

I have guests here in my suite and I need to get back to them now. I'll try (no promises) to post more tonight and possibly get on IRC again sometime in the next few hours to answer peoples' questions.

Mark Rein op IRC:

----------------

<Virax> Mark, although it seems that you're gearing to make this an annual thing, nothing has been confirmed as far as I know. Can you give any insight on that?
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> Well the idea with the year-based naming scheme was to be able to do just that.....
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> We weren't sure what form each new yearly version would take. There are 3 possible options: 1) a Game of the Year type upgrade where we're mostly incorporating patches and previously-available bonus materials (like we did with the UT GOTY)....
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> or 2) a more aggressive upgrade where we're adding major functionality and lots of completely new content (incl. new characters, weapons, static mesh sets, game types, etc.) which is what we're doing this year....
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> or 3) a whole new game with a new generation of Unreal Engine tech (like we did last year with UT2003).
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> Of course not every year might lend itself to either of the three approaches because new tech can take longer and we end us totally skipping a year because we don't have time to organize a type #1 (GOTY style) update.

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: you do understand how yearly updates can potentially severly affect (negatively) the competetive community right?
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> Sure that could happen but the kind of people who are still playing the game a full YEAR after the initial release are probably also the kind of people who are naturally going to want the cool completely new content and realize that we can't go that far for free. BUT for those people there is going to be a in-the-box mail-in rebate coupon that significantly reduces the cost to them.
<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: thanks for the response, i'm very pleased with how ut2004 is looking, but the possible "split community" scenerio is what i dont like
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> I don't think it will be a big factor. Atari is going to make it really attractive for existing users to buy the game.

_________________________________

<Mysterial> MarkRein[Epic]: What kind of bot improvements, if any, is there to the standard movement ai? (e.g. dodgejumps, dodging for increased movement speed, etc)
<MarkRein[Epic]> Mysterial--> I don't have a list but Steve said there are all kinds of cool bot AI improvements.
<MarkRein[Epic]> Mysterial--> Obviously there are some new bot behaviours to acccomodate vehicles (for example a bot driving while you shoot!) and the new weapons and game types too.

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: will there be more maps that have good flow and nice fps for tdm / ctf etc? or will there be more of the.....poopy? type of maps we've seen too many times before, how are you balancing looks and gameplay this time around?
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> There is good variety in the new maps. DE have made some that are specifically designed to appeal to the hardcore player (fewer SMs in gameplay areas to get stuck on, more flow, etc.)

_________________________________

<Mysterial> all you guys whine about gameplay and what are you asking about most? The graphics.
<Virax> Mysterial, we want a balance both, and I think Epic did a rather good job with the map pack in that sense, although not as good as DE. ;P
<Mysterial> bleh, I hate grendelkeep
<Virax> Grendelkeep is the shiznit man.
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> There's a CTF version of Grendelkeep in the works for UT2004!

_________________________________

<PJMODOS> Mark: ok forgot bout C headers, I got another 2 stupid questions: 1st will there be some less eye candy and more playable (i am not talking about fps) CTF maps ? and 2nd what you think about halflife2 ? lol
<MarkRein[Epic]> PJMODOS--> Yes to the first question in that there are some maps where the eye candy is moved out of the way and to the second question Half Life 2 looks AWESOME!!

_________________________________

<Virax> Mark, can we expect more remakes of any UT1 maps?
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> No, I am not aware of any more UT1 remakes being done. But that could always change.
* Virax prays for a Deck16'ish change ;X
_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: do you know of the featureset of uttv2k3 (4)? that will be included with 2k4? will it just be basic speccing? or have a larger featureset?
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> Both the UT TV Studio and the UTV (proxy broadcast) will be in UT2004.

_________________________________

<IllusionS> half life 2 looks like crap
<MarkRein[Epic]> IllusionS--> I assume you're joking when you said that. HL2 looks great! Like the first Half Life, the graphics aren't blow-you-away amazing (UT2003 is still more detailed) but the gameplay is utterly incredible. They spent their time exactly where they should have and it shows. Amazing attention to detail and looks like a blast to play.
<IllusionS> mostly joking

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: can you detail / outline the changes or enhancements to the menu system as stated? i saw that video and to be honest, i dont see ANY changes except for a new main menu skin...
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> One menu change, for example, is more advanced server filtering options.

_________________________________

<TseTse|ViceMoFo> do i need a receipt for ut2k3 to get the rebate for ut2k4? =(
<MarkRein[Epic]> TseTse|ViceMoFo--> Not sure exaclty how that is going to work but I suspect (I'm guessing here!) that you'll send in the rebate coupon itself plus some proof of purchase such as the manual cover

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: have you gotten confirmation from Atari on the media which ut2004 will be placed on? one DVD? x cd's? id imagine it would be massive with all the new content + 2003 content
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> No decision has been made but I suspect we'll ship on 5 or 6 CDs and not on DVD. I wouldn't mind seeing a limited edition DVD version with a bundled USB headset myself but those things take a TON of coordination to pull off.

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: i see in the 2k4 featureset it says network improvements, is that client side ping improvements? or server bandwidth enhancements? do you know?
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> I know about bandwidth improvements for sure. Not sure about client side.

_________________________________

<NE|Toque> MarkRein[Epic]: Is the ingame voice communication in functional form right now? If so what kind of quality are we looking at? Like which way does it go in terms of clarity and quality, XBox live direction, or crappy CS direction.
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|Toque--> Yes it functional, albeit early, now. I know we're still working on quality improvements, bandwidth optimizations and various feature but I thought it was quite good when I heard it. But that was over the office LAN.

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: i have heard there will be a demo for ut2004, will this be a post-release demo? or pre-release demo to recieve feedback and testing etc
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> Demo prior to release.

_________________________________

<Sergio[CoA]> a mmorpg on the unreal engine would be cool
<MarkRein[Epic]> Sergio[CoA]--> The sequel to the biggest MMORPG in the WORLD is being done on the Unreal Engine!! Lineage II. They were showing it at E3 this week and it looked INCREDIBLE!! Jay Wilbur (from Epic) begged them for beta accounts so we could try it!
_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: will you continue to release "free dedicated server" packages for 2k4 in order to increase the server count?
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> Yes there will be free dedicated server versions of UT2004 for Windows, Linux and eventually Mac.

_________________________________

<[RO]Jeremy> MarkRein[Epic], compliments on the 3d voice communication in ut2k4 How does it run? Any performence decrease because of it or is it optimized pretty well? Or do you not know yet
<MarkRein[Epic]> [RO]Jeremy--> I've only played with it in a LAN game and I didn't see anything that affected performance.

_________________________________

<NE|ra> MarkRein[Epic]: had 2k4 been "secretly" planned since the release of 2k3? or was this a semi-recent idea you guys decided on and went with it
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|ra--> We were pretty much planning to do SOMETHING that would be UT2004. Did we know when we shipped UT2003 that we would be doing something so aggressive as UT2004? No but Cliff was working with outside content providers from day 1.

_________________________________

<Virax> Mark, would you consider putting in the UC weapon models in for first person view only, configureable through client settings?
<MarkRein[Epic]> Virax--> Not sure what we're doing there but I believe DE are going to be doing some weapon stuff so anything is possible.

_________________________________

<MarkRein[Epic]> TseTse--> Epic and DE are doing the content. Some of the Epic content is through outside contractors which is something we've done since the original UT.
<NE|Toque> Spider mines in 1v1, bad call, very bad call.
<MarkRein[Epic]> NE|Toque--> Actually they would rock in 1v1! But I'm not sure we'll have them in non-Onslaught gametypes however.
