![]() maar heb er nog iets over gelezen op IMDb: Okay, first of all I'm a huge Terminator fan. After all these years T2 is still my favourite movie. It combined a great story with fantastic effects (which incredibly still stand up today) in a way that few other movies ever have. My fear is that Mostow and co. are going to do with this franchise what Fincher and Jeunet did to the Alien movies: totally ruin it. These are my 5 main reasons (apologies for the length but I have a lot to say): First: Cameron is gone. Cameron is what made the Terminator films what they are. They can no more survive without him than the Heroic Bloodshed films of the early 90's could survive without John Woo or the Samurai films of the 50s and 60s could survive without Akira Kurosawa. He and Gale-Ann Hurd made ALL the important creative decisions of the first 2 films, and they are both gone now. Second: Virtually all the key cast members are also gone. How in the world is this going to work without Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Robert Patrick or Edward Furlong? Furlong's replacement is especially mystifying. John Connor is supposed to be about 18 now (more on that in a moment), yet they cast another actor in his place who is the same age as Furlong? I can see this if the movie was set 30 or 40 years in the future but come on! We're supposed to believe Connor has transmogrified into a completely different-looking person in the last 8 years? (An older Connor has also already been glimpsed in T2 but I would forgive changing this small role if necessary.) Third: age. Not a single one of the current cast members is over 25! (Other than Arnie, who is twice the age of anyone else in the cast.) And a female Terminator? Called a "Terminatrix?!" Please! What is this, some kind of bad Mad TV sketch? It seems like they are trying to fill this movie with nubile young unknowns and turn it into some kind of teen romance! What the hell! (The supposed PG rating would lend credence to this: the Terminator series is as well known for its violence as anything else.) Are we expected to believe that Arnold will have trouble battling the pretty young "T-X?" He's getting old, but he's not that old! And that brings up another thing: he's playing a machine. Yet he will undoubtedly appear older in this movie than in the last. How is that going to be explained? This is one of the problems the later Star Trek movies have had (Data isn't supposed to get wrinkles or put on weight). Fourth: casting. Why have unknowns been hired to both act and direct? Mostow is unproven at best, especially to helm such an important franchise as this, and is not even in the same league as Cameron. And other than Claire Danes, not a single new actor is known for anything. In fact the authoritative IMDb can't even find pictures for some of them, including the actress playing the vital TX character! I realize Robert Patrick was an unknown in 1990, but Cameron made an inspired choice by casting him. By contrast it seems the studio is trying to cut corners by hiring actors as cheaply as possible this time around and pouring all their money into the F/X department. If this is the case I feel this movie is going to be astonishly, abysmally bad. Fifth: the plot. I loved T2 and I don't agree with those who say it was just a rehashing of the first film. I think T2 had an incredibly strong plot that took several strides beyond the first movie. Also, I think time travel and the like are central to the story, so we can't really expect the third film to deviate too much from the established template. That said, ANOTHER attempt by Skynet to kill John, by sending ANOTHER new kind of Terminator? Not only is this repetitive, it completely screws up the cautiously hopeful ending of T2 and replaces it with some kind of fatalistic "we'll never win" attitude. If there is no hope why keep on fighting at all? This is almost as bad as the total sacrilege of Alien 3 and what it did to Cameron and Ridley Scott's carefully constucted universe in the first 2 films of that series. zoooo ![]() |
