Nowadays, there's hardly a club without electronic-visual features, hardly an event without VJs. DIN AV 04/01/CN/86.03, the first release on brand new ~scape sub label dvdscape, highlights the personal and general development of this still relatively young VJ culture in which any division between art, commissioned work, club or high culture has become irrelevant. Initiated and curated by Berlin-based visomat inc (dedicated to the visualisation of music between media art and club culture since the mid-90s) this first instalment of an upcoming series provides insights into an extraordinarily vibrant and multi-faceted club video scene. Whether medial space design, installation, concept art, entertainment or simply aesthetic backdrop _ the 7-10-minute VJ mixes featured on this DVD (set to the music of their choice) celebrate the renunciation of and return to the video clip in an evolutionary and self-renewing progression. Supplemented by extensive background and bonus material these mixes work both as audiovisual wallpaper and undivided attention grabbers. In separate interviews Pit Schulz questions all artists involved on the interrelation between image and music and the role of the VJ because in their approach to sources and chance (leaving everything or nothing to it) the VJs featured could hardly be more different: while Pfadfinderei favour the spontaneous mix _ dismissing automatic synchronisation in favour of live improvisation _ Rechenzentrum prefer to cultivate the equality and synchronicity of music and image in an almost traditional band format.

DIN AV 04/01/CI/86.03 opens with its curators VISOMAT INC and the gradual rise of a sine curve: a field is pegged out and slowly filled with sound and visuals. From small to large, from abstract to model city, until JAN JELINEK's beat adds a third dimension, a trembling blur to the prefab estate. Cuts, stripes and fields for a true memory effect. Visomat prefer to work with space itself and, with gentle implacability, pay homage to a city destined to return to its banal, abstract void. RECHENZENTRUM, on the other hand, self-proclaimed protagonists of "maladjusted electronica², see computers and dictaphones as pragmatic means for their audiovisual symbioses. Sensory blips increase in mutual expectation: from modern minimalism to colour and beats, until sense and illusion make easy bedfellows. This de-glitched matrix is followed by a short, sharp cut to cinemascope: U-MATIC interlaces interstitial faults, system crashes and error messages into almost poetic gushes of colour to highlight the history of these non-moments. Her inherent rhythm is perfectly matched by SAFETY SCISSOR' sweepingly optimistic, breathless beats, fighting back with an equally astonishing fault tolerance. JUTOJO's analogue flickers of pictorial memories offer a bit of breathing space and take CHRISTIAN KLEINE's honeyed music onto a journey between day and dream. Cryptography on the remainders of celluloid and monochrome raindrops caught in the fading rays of the last 100 years of cinematography hint at shadows of arrival, associations of light and lines. JÖRG FRANZMANN sparks up the proceedings with circling splitscreens, girls and technology, quest and desire, with slogans of youth and hope to DIMBIMAN's track. Last but by no means least PFADFINDEREI turn out to be the only straightforward storytellers on this compilation: together with MODERAT (Modeselektor + Apparat) they stage an ordered kitchen apocalypse _ saucy, spicy, racy and tasty. Don't try this at home, kids!

Almost the end, but hardly over: Stefan Betke/POLE emphasises the musician's and label owner's perspective of an audiovisual collaboration, ideally (as on this DVD) a mutual, symbiotic feedback way beyond the sum of its parts. For quick intermissions or endless pleasures remember to check out the included three screensavers to enhance your virtual standby mode or private soiree with missing content or the elegant, monochrome trickles of Satie.

Thus, this time, 'Rise' blossoms beautifully into a languid, almost indescribable melange of live and synthesized instruments, before 'Shine' bridges the gap into the alien vocals and Teutonic authority of 'Holiday'. From there on out, the title track is an informed drift through the further reaches of the space time continuum, before 'Remember December' rises into almost transcendent Mercury Rev territory, vocals and brass and crazily beautiful codas in full effect.

De legendarische Duitse synthesizergroep Kraftwerk treedt op maandag 29 maart in de Heineken Music Hal Amsterdam op. Het is dan 12½ jaar geleden dat deze pioniers van de elektronische muziek voor een concert in ons land waren. De moderne muziek zou niet zijn wat ze is zonder Kraftwerk. De invloed van de groep is ongelofelijk groot. Het Düsseldorfse viertal Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Fritz Hilpert en Henning Schmitz is al meer dan 30 jaar samen.

Vorige zomer verscheen ‘Tour de France Soundtracks’, het eerste album van de groep sinds 12 jaar! Zoals de titel al verraadt, een herziene versie van de Tour de France plaat uit 1983. Naast nieuwe opnames van de bekende nummers uit 1983, bevat het album een aantal splinternieuwe tracks, evenals een concept voor een soundtrack die de opwinding en intensiteit van de wielerrace moet weergeven.

De robotstemmetjes die vitamines, technische hulpmiddelen en feiten over de Tour opdreunen in nummers van Tour de France Soundtracks, zijn een gimmick die Kraftwerk op Computerwelt al eens uithaalde. De gestopte beats doen denken aan Detroittechno van Moodymann en Robert Hood. Belangrijk thema in de muziek van Kraftwerk is de wereld van machines en computers. "Wir spielen die Machinen, die Machinen spielen uns. Es sind der Austausch und die Freundschaft mit den Maschinen, die uns eine neue Musik kreieren lassen".

In 1968 kwamen Ralf Hütter en Florian Schneider voor het eerst bij elkaar. Beiden studeerden ze aan de kunstacademie van Düsseldorf. In datzelfde jaar richten ze de formatie met de naam Organisation op, later bij het eerste album vervangen voor de naam Kraftwerk. The Godfathers of Techno zijn geboren. "Wir erfinden Geschichten und lllustrieren sie mit Musik", is het soundconcept. In 1975 komt het baanbrekende en legendarische Album 'Autobahn' uit. Voor de eerste albums werd nog gebruik gemaakt van normale muziekinstrumenten zoal fluit en viool. Maar voor 'Autobahn' werd voor het eerst door hen gebruik gemaakt van een zelfgebouwde synthesizer, in een zelfgebouwde studio. Door een drumcomputer via een sequenser op de synthesizer aan te sluiten ontstonden er ongekende mogelijkheden, die voor het eerst volledig werden benut op de plaat 'Autobahn'. Het nummer duurde tweeëntwintig minuten en de groep schilderde door middel van elektronische apparatuur de sfeer van de snelweg. De groep werd in één klap wereldberoemd.

Voormalig Kraftwerk-drummer Wolfgang Flur nam R.A.M mee naar de begindagen van Kraftwerk in Düsseldorf. Flur bleek in het bezit te zijn van uniek 8mm materiaal, gefilmd tijdens de eerste Amerikaanse tournee van Kraftwerk in 1975, toen de groep de Verenigde Staten in aanraking bracht met elektronica.

Daarna volgt R.A.M nauwgezet het spoor: hoe kon deze superblanke muziek van zo'n grote invloed worden op zwarte dansmuziek. In Detroit spoorde R.A.M. de baanbrekende radio dj Electrifying Mojo op, die begin jaren '80 de zwarte jeugd liet kennismaken met de strakke beats van Kraftwerk. Met zijn eigenzinnige muziekkeuze wist Mojo latere techno-grootheden als Derrick May, Carl Craig en Blake Baxter, die eveneens aan het woord komen, aan de radio gekluisterd te houden.

Van donderdag 23 tot en met zaterdag 25 september 2004 vindt in Paradiso de tiende editie plaats van het jaarlijkse Sonic Acts festival onder de naam: Sonic Acts 10 — Unsorted. Het centrale thema is de informatiekunsten. Het festival omvat een tweedaagse conferentie, drie avonden en nachten met live optredens, een filmprogramma en een expositie.

In samenwerking met www.live-cinema.org presenteert Sonic Acts dit jaar het Live Cinema programma. Live Cinema kan omschreven worden als een performance waarin een menselijke performer bewegend beeld en geluid in synergie manipuleert en tegelijkertijd presenteert aan het publiek. Op dit moment zijn er binnen het zich sterk ontwikkelende werkterrein van de Live Cinema een aantal verschillende richtingen te onderscheiden: abstract synthetische cinema, grafische cinema en camera-based cinema, waarvan we een aantal exemplarische performers in drie goedgevulde avonden in de kleine zaal van Paradiso presenteren: Battery Operated [UK/FR], Codespace [CH], Dyad [US/CH], Jan Jelinek + Karl Kliem [DE], Meta [US], Noizbleed [NL/NS], Optical Machines [NL], Pure+DeKam [AT/US], Radian [AT], Skoltz Kolgen [CA], mise-en-trôpes [BE] en Visomat + Errorsmith [DE]. De performances worden afgewisseld met interviews met de betreffende artiesten en met een film- en videoprogramma i.s.m. Martijn van Boven, speciaal samengesteld n.a.v. het Live Cinema thema. In late 2000, 5 canadians and 4 americans formed dot9 to bring their music together as a collective. Independently the styles varied in large degrees, but often they would come together or team up with another member to write songs or to explore sound and rhythm techniques. Dot9 stopped in March, 2003.

This compilation contains nine examples of that union. They are the favorites of the abandoned and scattered collaborations of dot9. From heavily melodic moments to mind numbing madness, these songs are evidence of the unique combined energy that was dot9.
