Twelve minutes and twenty-four seconds later, I stand in front of Elijah’s door, trying my best to enjoy myself while I’m waiting for him to open the bloody thing. With my hands stuffed deeply into my pockets, I rock back and forth on the back of my heels, trying to fight back the impatience that’s starting to grow within me. Bloody hell, why does it take him so long?
I press the bell for the second time, but now I do it about five seconds non-stop – something I know Lij finds highly obnoxious – while I got my forehead pressed against the window to find out if I can see anything. Which I can’t. Wonderful. The guy’s probably lying on his couch now with his shoes in the air and his head on the place where the more normal human beings among us have their feet when sitting, while the Smashing Pumpkins are blaring through the speakers so loudly that he probably wouldn’t notice it if you let fifteen ambulances with wailing sirens ride in circles through his kitchen. Either that or my watch is slow and he hanged himself out of frustration of me being late. Oh God, I hope I have some credit on my cell phone to call 911 when I find his dead body. Or is 911 a free number? Of course I could also call from his phone, but maybe it’s in his pocket and pick-pocketing a corpse isn’t really one of my favourite things to do. Not that I’ve ever done such a thing, but still. Hm. I wonder what Lij’s eyes would look like if they’re all goggly from the lack of oxygen. I bet it won’t be an enjoyable sight. Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together, because tonight you’ll be pleased with the visit of the one and only Orlando “maniac” Bloom, whose favourite pastime seems to be making up horrible scenario’s concerning his best friend Elijah Wood, who unfortunately couldn’t make it since his head is stuck in a rope. After coming back to the real world – in which Lij is still alive and kicking and ignoring the bell - I walk around the house to see if his garden doors are unlocked. You never know, right? When I have found my way through the jungle that is Elijah’s garden – the guy really needs to hire a gardener or something. I doubt one feels like imitating Mowgli here – I see, much to my surprise and fright, that the reason my friend hasn’t answered the door has got nothing to do with blaring music or ropes. He is sitting on one of his chairs, his legs stretched out in front of him and crossed at the ankles. The somewhat sorrowful expression on his face isn’t knew to me, since he’s been carrying an aura of sadness about him for the last few weeks now. I actually thought he felt better, but the emptiness in the eyes that are usually shimmering with mischief tells me otherwise. “I miss her,” he suddenly says, sensing my presence but never taking his eyes off a picture he is holding in his hand. “Why did she have to leave me, Orli? Why?” He lifts his head to look at me and I rush over to his side, not able to bear that painful expression I found in the blueness of his non-goggling eyes. “Oh Lij,” I say and wrap an arm around him like I have done oh-so-often lately. It seems his cheerfulness has left him together with Becky, his now ex-girlfriend. He was crazy about her and I have to admit they looked quite cute together, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that great for them. Out of the blue, she left him and Lij still hasn’t really recovered from his broken heart, as I can see now. “I was looking for a sheet and then I suddenly found this in my drawer,” Lij says, holding a picture that shows him and a sun-tanned Becky locked in a tight embrace. Dom had taken the picture and despite the fact Lij had been rather annoyed by Dom sneaking up on them the way he had, it had become his favourite picture of them together. A week after their split-up I had taken the picture off the dresser Lij had placed it on and had secretly put it into the drawer in between the sheets, thinking it would be better for him if there were less reminders of their relationship in the house as possible. And now he finally found it, which makes me wonder if he hasn’t changed his bedding the past month. Yuck. That would be really disgusting. No wonder Becky left him. Hm. I really should focus here. I’m sure the last thing Lij wants right now is a lecture of hygiene on my part. I put on my Dr Love cap - figuratively speaking of course, the only cap I own is that yellow one which everybody found totally hideous, something that only encouraged me to wear it more often - and take the picture from him, putting it on the table upside down. “Lij, listen to me,” I say carefully. “I know you miss her and everything, but I think it’s time to move past this. It’s high time you start living your normal life again.” “You don’t understand. We were meant to be together, you know?” he says in a voice that reminds me of my 4-year-old cousin whom I nicknamed Whiney. “Look,” I say calmly, or at least that’s what I’m trying to do. “She left you, alright? You and her had a great time together, but it’s over Lij. You’ve got to accept it.” He rubs his cheeks with his hands and I can see he’s pondering whether to keep on floating in an ocean of distress, desperately clinging to a piece of false hope to prevent himself from drowning, or facing the truth: Becky is gone and she will very likely never return. “But I love her!” he says in a tormented voice, looking at me in despair like I have the solutions to all his problems. Oh God, maybe he’s going to hang himself after all. I sigh deeply, feeling the tiniest hint of frustration trying to break free. “Lij, we’ve discussed this before. I won’t allow you to sink away in misery once again. There are loads of other nice girls, but if you’re gonna stay inside all day long with the curtains closed, watching When Harry Met Sally with a box of handkerchiefs beside you-” “I’ve never done anything like that,” my friend comments in a how-can-you-accuse-me-of-such-a-thing tone. “Me neither.” I’m such a liar. “But that’s not the point Lij. The point is that you need to open yourself for new things.” “New girls, you mean,” he says, looking at me sceptically. He’s the third one who gave me such a look today. First Ginger, then Ruth, now him. I guess I’ve left the peak of my popularity far behind me already. “Well, yeah! I mean, you’re staring yourself blind on the memory of Becky so much that you totally forget the world around you,” I say, crossing my arms like my teachers always did when they wanted to pretend they were smart and I was ignorant. All that’s missing is a pair of glasses on the bridge of my nose. “Why do you want to pretend you’re smart and I’m ignorant?” he says a little offended. “At least Becky and I weren’t engaged when she ran away from me.” “You’re majorly overstepping your boundaries here, young man,” I say in a patronising tone. “And for your information, Cyril didn’t run away from me. We just grew apart.” Elijah sighs so deeply that I’m afraid he is going to have an asthma attack and runs both his hands through his hair. “I know, I know. I’m sorry Orli. Didn’t mean it like that. It’s just… You got April! It’s so easy for you to say such a thing when you got a girlfriend, you know? And even if you haven’t, you’ve got girls throwing themselves at your feet.” His voice sounds more frustrated with every word that comes out, almost like he’s accusing me for being the Sex God that I am. For heaven’s sake, I can’t help being gorgeous! It was destiny! If you thought I meant any word of that, you’re insane. I know it sometimes seems I’m an arrogant prick with an ego as big as the sun, but in reality, I’m just a little boy who tries to hide his insecurities and fears by being loud and faking confidence. “For God’s sake, Lij. Look at you! With that eyes of yours you can melt the hearts of thousands of women!” “Yeah right,” he says with rolling eyes. I can’t believe he actually isn’t aware of the effect he can have on people. Becky really must have destroyed his confidence, I can’t remember him ever being this low about himself. “You’re underestimating yourself big time Lij,” I tell him. “Anyway, please try to move on with your life, alright? As Greenpeace claims, there’s no time to waste.” He turns to look at me with confusion written all over his goatee-bearded face. “And why is that?” “Because we’re going out tonight,” I say triumphantly. It’s high time Elijah gets a taste of LA’s nightlife again. ----- Meep. :/  e thread, btw.

“Niks daarvan, die zijn van ons,” zei Grizelda fel en sprong op om haar pizza te verdedigen. “Ga je eigen maken, schooier.” Lane grinnikte. “Hoor jij niet verlegen en stil te zijn?” vroeg hij geamuseerd. “Wat heeft die jongen met je gedaan?” Nikolaj grijnsde vuil. “Dat wil jij niet weten,” zei hij. “Oh, in tegenstelling, ik ben een en al oor,” zei Lane met net zo’n smerige grijns op zijn gezicht. Grizelda stak haar handen in de lucht. “Keiko had gelijk,” zei ze verontwaardigd. “Jongens zijn ook allemaal hetzelfde.” Stukje van mijn NaNoWriMo novel van vorig jaar.
