Hello,
I would like to tell you something about a book I recently read. It is a real nice book to read. The story is about a 19 year old boy, called Cal. He is very lazy and he likes playing the guitar in his room. He lives with his father Shamie in Northern-Ireland. They are threatened a lot, because they are the only Catholics in the neighbourhood. All the other people are Protestant. Cal’s mother died when he was eight years old. His father is a butcher and offers him a job in his store but he did not accept it because he can’t stand blood. Cal is a fanatic smoker. One day he went to the library and there he fell in love with a woman who works there. Back home he gets a phone call from Crilly, an old school friend. He goes over to his house and Crilly offers him a job as a driver for their illegal activities. He does not want to accept the job, but they talked him into it. One day they even robbed a bank. That way he gets involved with the IRA (Irish Republican Army). Skeffington is a member of this group as well. One day Cal goes to Mrs Morton's home to ask if she would like to buy some blocks. She would like to buy some, but Cal must return the day after to split them into smaller peaces. The next day Cal returns to split the wood and collect his money. Mrs Morton offers him a full time job as potato-grabber. Cal finds out that Marcella lives with Mrs Morton and she has a daughter called Lucy. One evening he has to drive for Crilly again. That night Crilly kills Robert, the son of Mrs Morton. The last thing that Robert said was "Marcella". He was a police officer. The Mortons are all protestants except for Marcella, she’s a catholic. She’s from Italian origin. Her last name is D’Agostinos and her father owned a café-business on the sea front. Cal actually doesn’t want to be involved with Crilly but they convince him every time. One day his worst nightmare comes true. Their house is set on fire. His father found a place to sleep at an old friend, called Ryan Dermot. Cal himself sleeps in Mrs Morton's barn, without her permission. After a police/army raid they find out about his sleeping place, but he’s allowed to stay. The relation between him and Marcella gets better and better. She even gives him Robert’s old clothes. Cal doesn’t visit his father often because he doesn’t want Crilly to see him. Cal’s father gets sicker by the day because of the loss of their home. When Mr and Mrs Morton leave home for a week, Cal and Marcella get to sleep together. Marcella didn’t want it at first but the next day she came to sleep with him. She was ten years older than he was. Because of the coming Christmas time, Cal went to the shopping centre to buy some presents. From there he went to Ryan Dermot’s house but his father wasn’t there. He had been taken into the hospital..He gave Dermot a present for him and one for his father and then he went to library to see Marcella but encountered Crilly instead. He showed him a book with a bomb inside. He wanted to blow up the library. He convinced Cal, and took him home with him. A few minutes later Skeffington arrived there as well.. While they were talking they heard the police coming. Cal got away but Crilly and Skeffington got busted. Cal goes to a cell phone and calls the police. He tells them about the book with a bomb hidden inside in the library. He says the book is called “middemoch” and written by someone called Eliot. He goes to Marcella and the next day they arrest him. He’s happy with it because he feels guilty.
