BELARUSIANS FIGHT FOR FREEDOM
20:40, 21/07/2004, photo Reuters Attempt of Belarusian citizens to sum up outcomes of 10 years of Lukashenka ruling resulted in arrests and beatings. About 50-60 people were arrested during the action they are kept in Soviet district police department. Famous opposition activists were arrested too. Among them are coordinator of Charter’97 Dmitry Bandarenka, “Zubr” coordinators Yauhin Afnagel, Pavel Yuhnevich and Andrey Asmalousky, free-lancer Fiodar Pauliuchenka and others. It is cleare that there are under-aged people and old men among the arrested. Many of the arrested people were beaten and need medical care. Officers of riot police blocked yakub Kolas square where the beginning of the demonstration was appointed. They pushed participants of the action away from Yakub Kolas square. By this time journalists and regular citizens who came to sum up results of 10 ruling of Lukashenka started to gather on the square. Only journalists remained there. attempt to arrest leader of “Republic” group Siarhey Skrebets. The MP was grabbed by police officers when he was seating on the bench not far from Yakub Kolas square. After that they got an order to release him. It was impossible to gather on the square and participants of the action started to gather at the opposite side of Skaryna avenue. But Group of 100 “Zubr” activists were blocked by large group of riot police. After a short clash they were arrested and thrown to police buses. Most of detained people were beaten. People in civil were also beating young people. 3-4 police officers were beating each participant of the action. After the avenue was cleared riot police blocked it. In spite of numerous arrests group of “Zubr” activists tried to unroll several placards with slogans “Clear your mind!”, “Belarus is the last dictatorial Matrix in Europe” and others. Riot police officers ran up to them, torn the placards and arrested several people more. Two large groups of youth several hundreds people each started movement to place of the meeting. Columns are headed by Minsk and regional coordinators of “Zubr” movement. Both columns move without flags but they scan slogans. Many of them are dressed in T-shirts of two kinds: white T-shirt with portrait of Mihail Marinich and words “Belarus will be free!” And black one with green letters from Matrix, “Zubr” logo and words “Welcome to the real world!”. From time to time police are trying to arrest single participants of the action. Two columns united into one near “Riga” supermarket. At the moment column of 2000 people moved on Surganov street. Column is led by coordinator of “Zubr” movement Nikita Sasim. Leaders of “Republic” group Valery Frolov and Serhey Skrebets were also in the column. People moved to Bangalor square where concert of popular Belarusian rock groups “Neuro dubel”, “Drum extasy” and “Krywi” was carried out. Column of participants of the meeting reached Bangalor square where authorities allowed to carry out meeting. Representatives of political parties who refused to participate in not allowed part of the action were waiting them there.

Kritische Wit-Russische universiteit gesloten
