Lanceerinrichting raketten gevonden in Jordanië

(Novum/AP) - De lanceerinrichting waarmee vrijdag drie katjoesja-raketten werden afgevuurd op de haven van de Jordaanse stad Aqaba en het Israëlische Eilat is zaterdag in een pakhuis in Aqaba gevonden. Dat heeft de Jordaanse minister van binnenlandse zaken Awni Yirfas meegedeeld aan het persbureau Associated Press. Ook zijn in verband met het onderzoek naar de raketaanval verschillende personen gearresteerd, die de Syrische, Iraakse en Egyptische nationaliteit hebben, aldus een veiligheidsfunctionaris die anoniem wenste te blijven.

Vanuit Jordanië werden vrijdag drie raketten afgevuurd op de haven van Aqaba en de luchthaven van de Israëlische badplaats Eilat. Eén raket vloog rakelings over het Amerikaanse marineschip USS Ashland dat in de haven van Aqaba lag en trof een opslagplaats van het Jordaanse leger. Een Jordaanse soldaat werd daarbij gedood. Ook raakte een persoon, eveneens een Jordaniër, gewond. Een tweede raket raakte twee kilometer buiten de haven de muur van een ziekenhuis. De raket die op Eilat werd afgeschoten belandde net buiten het hek rond de luchthaven op een weg en kwam niet tot ontploffing. Een taxichauffeur raakte daarbij lichtgewond.

De Abdullah Azzam Brigades, die banden hebben met de terreurorganisatie Al-Qaida, hebben in een internetverklaring de verantwoordelijkheid voor de raketaanvallen opgeëist, maar de authenticiteit van die verklaring kon nog niet worden bevestigd. De Abdullah Azzam Brigades hebben eerder onder meer de aanslagen in de Egyptische badplaats Sharm el-Sheik op 23 juli opgeëist.

Pakistan could have 110 N-bombs by year end

WASHINGTON: By the end of the current year, Pakistan will have produced enough weapons grade uranium to manufacture 50 to 110 nuclear weapons against India’s 75 to 110.

According to a study published by the Non-proliferation Centre of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, India may be producing significant quantities of highly enriched uranium at its gas-centrifuge plant in Trombay, outside Mumbai, though the amounts produced remain unknown. The study says both India and Pakistan possess components to deploy a small number of nuclear weapons within a few days or weeks, with fighter-bomber aircraft being the most likely delivery vehicle.

Pakistan’s nuclear weapons are stored in component parts, with the fissile core separated from the non-nuclear explosives. It is not known where the fissile material and warheads are stored. India, states the study, continues to produce nuclear materials for use in weapons and has not officially said how many weapons it has and how many it intends to produce. Pakistan has been equally discreet.

One of the authors of the study, Miriam Rajkumar, has authored a brief that criticises the Bush administration for reversing decades of US non-proliferation policy by agreeing to provide India with nuclear fuel. “President Bush thus accorded India a much sought after seat in the ‘responsible’ nuclear club,” she wrote.

‘Nuclear Arsenals,’ as the study is named, makes the point that from an Indian perspective, the nuclear tests of 1998 raised its visibility and clout in the post-Cold War era. “If US attention is a measure of respect and status, then the nuclear tests have ultimately achieved India’s objectives,” according to the authors. The study said the Bush administration has forgotten the benchmarks set by its predecessor for India and Pakistan to be allowed out of the nuclear “doghouse” after their 1998 tests that led to punitive US sanctions.

“Beyond ensuring that Kashmir does not explode, the Bush administration has decided to downplay nuclear nonproliferation concerns so that it can renew defence ties and establish strategic relations with India. It also believes that Washington and New Delhi “see eye-to-eye on anti-missile systems” and predicts that all Indian governments will remain committed to weaponisation, even if budget and technical realities and international political considerations continue to act as a restraining factor.

A study by the Congressional Research Service meanwhile that if the Indo-US nuclear accord is endorsed by Congress, the resulting cooperation would contravene the multilateral export control guidelines of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). “At a time when the United States has called for all states to strengthen their domestic export control laws and implementation and for tighter multilateral controls, US nuclear cooperation with India would require loosening its nuclear export legislation, as well as creating a an NSG exception.”

Such a deal could prompt other suppliers like China to justify their supplying other states, like Pakistan. The report does not consider the steps India has agreed to take as sufficient. “Separating civilian and military facilities, placing civilian facilities under IAEA safeguards, and applying additional protocol and all positive steps, but place India squarely in the company of nuclear weapon states. There are no measures in this global partnership to restrain India’ nuclear weapons programme,” the Congressional Research Service maintains.

It argues that the existence of India’s nuclear weapons programme negates potential nonproliferation assurances that nuclear safeguards on civil facilities might provide. It says, “A significant question if how India, in the absence of full-scope safeguards, can provide adequate confidence that US peaceful nuclear technology will not be diverted to nuclear weapons purposes.” The report points out that even if Congress approves the Indo-US deal, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission would still have to license nuclear exports under the agreement.

The US president would also need to waive certain provisions of existing US law to keep India supplied because of India’s continuing nuclear weapons programme.

On the same subject, New York Democratic Congressman Joseph Crowley told India Abroad in an interview that the Indo-US nuclear deal would be a “tough sell” to Congress because of is implications for nonproliferation. Asked how he would vote on the issue, he replied, “I’ll have to take a look and see just how it comes up and what the parameters are that the bill comes under and what amendments will have to be made in order to allow India to be qualified for that technology.

There may be room here for compromise.” He was of the view that India would do well to sign the NPT, something India has refused to do – like Pakistan – as it considers the Treaty discriminatory.

US Marine, Afghan soldier killed, four other troops wounded in clash; New envoy predicts tough times ahead in Afghanistan

KABUL (Agencies): A US Marine and an Afghan soldier were killed and four other Afghan troops wounded while fighting militants in an area where an American helicopter was shot down in June, the US military said Friday.A statement said the soldiers died on Thursday during an operation northwest of Asadabad, capital of the violence-hit eastern province of Kunar."The unit was conducting operations to disrupt enemy forces working in the area in order to clear the way for successful elections," said Lieutenant Colonel James E. Donnellan of the US Army.Afghanistan's first parliamentary and district elections since the fall of the hardline Islamic Taleban regime at the hands of US-led forces in 2001 are due to take place on Sept 18.Two of the wounded Afghan soldiers had returned to duty and the other two had been transferred to medical facilities in Kabul and the US military base at Bagram for treatment, the statement said.

The casualties occurred on the same day that two US soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the southern province of Kandahar.A total of 70 US troops have now been killed in operations linked to Afghanistan in 2005, making it the deadliest year yet for US forces in the war-torn country.Sixteen US service members died in late June when Taleban militants downed a Chinook helicopter that was on a mission to rescue a team of elite US Navy SEALs near Asadabad.Three of the four commandos were killed by militants while one was rescued by an Afghan shepherd.In recent months violence has surged in southern and eastern Afghanistan, with nearly 1,000 people killed in militant-related violence so far this year, compared with 850 in 2004.On Thursday, Taleban guerillas released a kidnapped Lebanese engineer whom they had threatened to kill if his company failed to pull out of Afghanistan.It was unclear whether the firm had agreed to the rebels' demand.

Earlier Friday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged his countrymen to vote for candidates who were honest and would uphold the law in next month's elections. Speaking to thousands of citizens and officials at a ceremony marking independence from Britain in 1919, Karzai said: "I want my countrymen and women to vote for those who are good Muslims and lovers of Afghanistan." "The people should vote for those who are the most honest and want the rule of law," he said. He also called on candidates to "not forget their responsibility before God and history". A roadside bombing has killed two US soldiers - the latest in a spate of deadly rebel attacks as the new American ambassador warned that fighting was likely to continue in Afghanistan for some time.

Pakistan-Missile

Pakistan is developing a new cruise missile with a longer range of 1,000 kilometre, said a Paksitani minister here Saturday.

Pakistani Information and Broadcasting Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed made the remark during a media workshop adding in Islamabad.

Pakistan has recently test-fired its maiden cruise missile on August 12 with a range of 500 kilometre.

Islamabad has a long history of developing missiles over the years of rivalry with India that has its own variety of missiles.

Both countries are now on the path to normalize their long-term severed relations, marred by tensions over Kashmir dispute.

Hockeydames Europees kampioen

DUBLIN - En weer was het raak, voor de zesde keer in zeven edities van het Europees Kampioenschap hockey. De Nederlandse vrouwen versloegen zaterdag Duitsland (2-1) en prolongeerden zo de titel die een aantal van hen twee jaar terug in Barcelona had behaald. Het jongste succes was een product van een eensgezind team en de goed werkende mix van jong en oud.

In Spanje ging het in 2003 allemaal vanzelf. Zo gemakkelijk en superieur hockeyde Nederland destijds, dat niemand eraan twijfelde wie de titel zou meenemen. Maar toen ging het om een EK in het pre-olympische jaar. In Dublin stonden nieuwe speelsters op het veld, die willen toewerken naar Peking 2008.


Leuker

"Eigenlijk is dit leuker", vond Maartje Scheepstra, die werd verkozen tot beste speelster van het toernooi. "Dit was een echte finale, die in Barcelona niet. Ik vind het superknap dat dit team al zo ver is. Het is ongelooflijk dat we met dit team, waarvan nog niet veel verwacht werd, het alweer flikken. Nu hopen we dat we ook de wereld kunnen veroveren."

Die kans krijgen de speelsters van bondscoach Marc Lammers volgend jaar in Madrid. Door de finale in Dublin te bereiken, kwalificeerde het team zich al voor dat toernooi. Lammers moest vrijdag tijdens de halve eindstrijd tegen Engeland en zaterdag zijn speelsters voortdurend coachen.

"Omdat er nog zo veel jongelingen bijzitten", verklaarde de gelukkige coach. "Je moet hen steeds zeggen dat ze bij een spelhervatting gelijk weer goed staan. Dat lukte prima. Nederland kreeg tijdens het hele toernooi maar een goal tegen. Alle andere wedstrijden werden met afstand gewonnen. Ook in de finale was het collectief van Lammers duidelijk de betere ploeg. De start was zaterdag uitstekend, aangezien binnen 10 minuten zowel Ellen Hoog als Minke Booij al hadden gescoord. Kim Lammers miste daarna een opgelegde kans, zodat de Duitsers mochten blijven hopen.

En de ploeg die in Athene Nederland van olympisch goud hield kwam terug. Via een strafcorner van Keller werd de achterstand verkleind. "Toen werd ik bang", zei Lammers, "want mijn speelsters waren moe. We hebben ze dit jaar bewust meer rust gegeven, want ze hebben tegenwoordig nog maar twee of drie weken vakantie per jaar. We zijn later begonnen met de voorbereiding en daarom weten we nu dat het fysiek allemaal nog niet top is. Het uithoudingsvermogen kan groter. En de strafcorner moet ook nog beter."

Het waren kritische kanttekeningen op een dag die Lammers lang zal bijblijven. "Dit is persoonlijk voor mij wel een van de belangrijkste overwinningen ooit", stelde de Brabander, die met zijn nieuwe team na Athene ook al de Champions Trophy won. Ook toen werd overigens Duitsland verslagen (2-0). "Het is heel mooi dat we dit al hebben bereikt met een ploeg die we nog maar net op gang hebben gebracht."

Pakistan to build 12 new nuclear power plants, says official

Islamabad, Pakistan's Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Pervez Butt says ten to twelve new nuclear power plants will be built in the next few years to meet energy requirements of Pakistan.
"In the present day competitive era, each nation has to carve out its own destiny from available resources and the PAEC has followed this self-reliance path to evolve successes in the domain of national security, agriculture, cancer treatment, nuclear energy and industrial support services," Butt said while addressing the prize distribution ceremony of National Engineering Robotic Contest

He said the PAEC has, on self-help basis, done research in different fields and proved its worth in self-reliance and proficiency. "We have adopted the path of self reliance for our survival in this high speed and competitive era."

Army Planning for 4 More Years in Iraq
Army Planning for Possibility of Keeping U.S. Troop Levels in Iraq Through 2009, Top General Says

WASHINGTON Aug 20, 2005 — The Army is planning for the possibility of keeping the current number of soldiers in Iraq well over 100,000 for four more years, the Army's top general said Saturday.

In an Associated Press interview, Gen. Peter Schoomaker said the Army is prepared for the "worst case" in terms of the required level of troops in Iraq. He said the number could be adjusted lower if called for by slowing the force rotation or by shortening tours for soldiers.

Schoomaker said commanders in Iraq and others who are in the chain of command will decide how many troops will be needed next year and beyond. His responsibility is to provide them, trained and equipped.

About 138,000 U.S. troops, including about 25,000 Marines, are now in Iraq.

"We are now into '07-'09 in our planning," Schoomaker said, having completed work on the set of combat and support units that will be rotated into Iraq over the coming year for 12-month tours of duty.

Schoomaker's comments come amid indications from Bush administration officials and commanders in Iraq that the size of the U.S. force may be scaled back next year if certain conditions are achieved.

Among those conditions: an Iraqi constitution must be drafted in coming days; it must be approved in a national referendum; and elections must be held for a new government under that charter.

Schoomaker, who spoke aboard an Army jet on the trip back to Washington from Kansas City, Mo., made no predictions about the pace of political progress in Iraq. But he said he was confident the Army could provide the current number of forces to fight the insurgency for many more years. The 2007-09 rotation he is planning would go beyond President Bush's term in office, which ends in January 2009.

Schoomaker was in Kansas City for a dinner Friday hosted by the Military Order of the World Wars, a veterans' organization.

"We're staying 18 months to two years ahead of ourselves" in planning which active-duty and National Guard and Reserve units will be provided to meet the commanders' needs, Schoomaker said in the interview.

Pakistan seeks as many as 75 new F-16 warplanes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pakistan has sought prices for buying as many as 75 new F-16 C/D Falcon fighter aircraft since the Bush administration announced it would resume sales, the head of the Pentagon agency handling the matter said Wednesday.

Pakistan also has asked about buying 11 used F-16s, said Air Force Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kohler, head of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which runs U.S. government-to-government arms sales.

Many experts had expected Pakistan to seek only about two dozen F-16s, said Richard Aboulafia of Teal Group, a Virginia-based aerospace consultancy.

The numbers cited by Kohler show it wants to make the F-16 a mainstay of its combat aircraft fleet, he said, adding this was "very ambitious in terms of regional strategy and very costly."

The single-engine, multi-role F-16 is built by Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT.N). The new purchases would flesh out a fleet of about 32 F-16s acquired before Congress cut off sales in 1990 over Pakistan's nuclear program.

Kohler, in an interview with Reuters, said Pakistan had requested F-16 Block 50/52 aircraft, the most modern flown by the United States and the current production standard, similar to exports to Poland, Greece, Chile, Oman and Israel.

Only the United Arab Emirates flies a more advanced variant, Block 60, with improved radar, defenses and range.

Asked about any Pakistani interest in the Block 60 model, Kohler said: "They did not ask for it and I don't think they could afford it." Kohler held arms-sale talks with defense ministry officials in Pakistan and India last month.

"I think when we go back and talk to them about the cost of the new systems my guess is that they will downsize slightly the (request for) new and they may increase slightly the used," he said.

The Bush Administration announced on Mar. 25 that it would resume sales of F-16s to Pakistan after a 16-year break. The about-face was widely seen as a reward for Pakistan's support of the U.S.-led global war on terrorism.

At the same time, the administration said it would let Boeing Co. (BA.N) and Lockheed compete for a potential $9 billion market in India for as many as 126 combat aircraft.

Lockheed is pitching India the same F-16 Block 50/52 and Boeing is offering its dual-engine F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the most modern combat U.S. aircraft currently in full-rate production.

The F-16 C/D Block 50/52 sells for $40 million to $45 million each, depending on options. Boeing's Super Hornet is expected to cost $50 million to $55 million, based on the U.S. Navy's next production batch, Kohler said.

He said India was seeking to produce domestically the majority of the aircraft it eventually buys. It also apparently had invited bids from Sweden, France and Russia, Kohler said.

For Pakistan, U.S. government officials were still weighing the weapons systems, targeting pods, radars and electronic warfare equipment that would be offered as part of a package.

A deal could perhaps be notified to Congress toward the end of the summer, the first step in a process that could lead to deliveries three years after an agreement is signed, he said.

Paus roept op tot dialoog in strijd tegen terrorisme

KEULEN - Paus Benedictus XVI vindt een dialoog tussen christenen en moslims van vitaal belang in de strijd tegen terrorisme. Dat zei hij zaterdag tijdens een bijeenkomst met vertegenwoordigers van de moslimgemeenschap in Duitsland. De ontmoeting vond plaats in de marge van de Wereldjongerendagen.

Moslims en christenen moeten de strijd aangaan met de wrok en de onverdraagzaamheid, die volgens de paus de wortels zijn van het terroristische geweld. "Als wij er samen in slagen elk spoor van wrok uit onze harten te verwijderen, elke vorm van onverdraagzaamheid te weerstaan, ons te verzetten tegen elke uiting van geweld, dan kunnen wij de golf van het wrede fanatisme keren die de wereldvrede verhindert."

De paus veroordeelde het terrorisme als "pervers en afschuwelijk". Degenen die achter terreuraanslagen zitten hebben volgens de kerkvorst "kennelijk de bedoeling onze relaties te vergiftigen. Met gebruik van alle middelen, waaronder religie, verweren zij zich tegen elke poging een vreedzaam, eerlijk en rustig leven samen op te bouwen".

Pausmobiel

Benedictus woonde zaterdagavond een massale avondwake bij op het Marienfeld in de buurt van Keulen. Ongeveer 700.000 jongeren verwelkomden de kerkvorst aan de vooravond van het slot van de Wereldjongerendagen. De paus werd in zijn pausmobiel over het terrein rondgereden. Hij zwaaide naar de menigte en werd zelf hartstochtelijk toegejuicht.

Benedictus, die de menigte vanonder een grote witte baldakijn toesprak, zei dat er "veel is om kritiek op te hebben" binnen de katholieke kerk. Hij herinnerde aan Johannes Paulus II, die "vergiffenis vroeg voor al het verkeerde dat er in de loop van de geschiedenis is gebeurd". Benedictus' voorganger heeft zich onder meer verontschuldigd voor de Inquisitie in de Middeleeuwen en misdaden tegen joden.

Rolmodellen

Benedictus zei verder dat de "ware revolutie" om de wereld te veranderen van God komt. Hij riep de katholieke jongeren op om goede rolmodellen te zijn voor de kerk.

Het Marienfeld was zaterdagavond veranderd in een zee van lichtjes doordat de honderdduizenden aanwezigen kaarsen bij zich hielden. Vlaggen, gejuich en muziek begeleidden zoals gebruikelijk tijdens de WJD de viering.

Zondagochtend gaat Benedictus voor in de mis die tevens het hoogtepunt moet worden van de Wereldjongerendagen. De organisatie verwacht zo'n één miljoen gelovigen.

French Writer Says Gaza Pullout "Mirage"

PARIS, Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip is a big mirage that only serves the Jewish state's measures to absorb the legitimate rights of Palestinian people, according to a French writer Thursday, August 18.

"The Israeli pullout from Gaza serves (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon's political purposes to show the whole world that Israel is making great sacrifices to achieve peace, though the step itself is limited ", Alain Gresh, Le Monde Diplomatique editor-in-chief.

Gresh, author of many books on the Palestinian cause, said the Gaza withdrawal mainly aims to win points on the public relations front, alleviate international pressures on the Sharon government, and manipulate the rest of the legitimate Palestinian rights.

"The Gaza withdrawal is marred by an unprecedented intensity of Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and occupied Al-Quds (East Jerusalem)."

Questions are also still unanswered on guaranteeing a free access of the Palestinian in and out the strip following the Israeli withdrawal, he maintained.

"Would the Palestinians have free access to neighboring Egypt and the West Bank to visit their families and relatives and have their own airport and seaport?"

"Such unanswered questions threaten to turn the strip into a big prison for the Palestinians."

Many Palestinians believe the impoverished Gaza Strip would become a big prison unless Israel agrees to a "safe passage" into the West Bank, in addition to a new harbor and the reopening of Gaza airport.

Following talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on July 23, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Washington wants a freedom of movement in the Strip following the Israeli pullout.

What's Next?

What matters next is Israel's future moves on the peace track with the Palestinians following the Gaza pullout, the French reporter said.

"Would Israel be ready to dismantle the settlements and evacuate settlers from the West Bank?"

Political analysts ruled out that the Israeli pullout from Gaza could make high hopes for any peace talks on the future of the occupied West Bank or dismantling more Jewish settlements for years.

Gresh further warned that the Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian lands would spark a new Palestinian Intifada.

"The Israeli policy on encouraging the settlement activities in Al-Quds and the West Bank could spark Palestinian military attacks and lead to the eruption of a new Palestinian Intifada."

Israel is already under intense international criticism over the separation barrier it is building in the West Bank, which will eventually extend 600 kilometers, cutting into the occupied territories and disrupting the lives of the Palestinians.

Israel claims that the West Bank barrier is for security reasons, but the Palestinians believe it is aimed at grabbing more of the land they need for their future state.

Palestinian State

The famed French reporter, however, ruled out the eruption of a new Palestinian Intifada in the near future.

"The ongoing face-off with the Israeli occupation forces have exhausted the Palestinian people.

"The Palestinians also want to give Abbas an opportunity to reach a peaceful solution with Israel, though they don't count much on this."

Gresh stressed that the setup of the independent Palestinian state is the only guarantee to end the reciprocated military clashes between the Palestinians and Israel.

"I don't see any chances ahead to establish the Palestinian state by the end of this year despite the fact that the internationally endorsed roadmap plan envisages this.

"In addition, we see no international pressures on Israel by the United States or the European Union to push the Jewish state to engage in peace negotiations with the Palestinians or withdraw from the Palestinian territories."

Hizbullah: Army still unable to defend country

BEIRUT: "Hizbullah will not hand in its weapons as long as Israel possesses 400 nuclear missiles," according to Hizbullah's Baalbek-Hermel MP Hussein Hajj Hassan.

In an interview with "Arab Week" magazine, Hajj Hassan said that the Lebanese Army is still not in a position to defend Lebanon against the threats and dangers posed by Israel, ruling out the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1614, which calls on Lebanon to deploy its army in the South.

He also said that Resolution 1559, calling on the disarmament of Hizbullah, would not be implemented "unless the Lebanese agree on it."

"I believe the Lebanese are aware and wise enough to realize that it is in the interest of their country to protect Hizbullah," he said, stressing that the resolution and the alleged Israeli withdrawal from the Shebaa Farms were mere excuses.

"The Americans' and Israelis' prime goal is to disarm Hizbullah in a bid to strip Lebanon of its strong strategic card in order to serve Israel's interests."

He added that the Lebanese have already initiated a dialogue over the issue in order not to enter in a conflict with the international community.

The MP reiterated "the Lebanese Army is not capable of defending the nation considering that it lacks the proper weapons and technologies."

He expressed readiness to engage in a dialogue, but stressed that the resistance will keep its weapons until Lebanon no longer faces any danger.

"Let Israel hand in its weapons to the international community and we will see afterwards," he said, arguing that the international community fears the nuclear project in Iran yet it is not concerned about reactions regarding the atomic missiles in Israel.

"Should we be deprived of any means of defense against Israel? This is unfair," said Hajj Hassan.

Asked about the U.S.-Israeli fears that Hizbullah might support Iran by targeting the Jewish state in case the nuclear plants in Iran are attacked, Hajj Hassan replied that "there is no link between the resistance, which is a national force at the service of Lebanon's defense, and Iran, the Islamic Republic which already possesses necessary means to defend itself."

Commenting on threats by Sunni fundamentalists against the Lebanese Shiite commanders, Hajj Hassan indicated the U.S. project of "constructive chaos" is present now more than ever and the Lebanese should be aware that any mistake can serve this project.

"There is great tension in the region and developments will have repercussions on the local scene, so we must be ready for all possibilities," he said.

(Novum/AP) - Voor het eerst zijn vrijdag in Indonesië stokslagen uitgedeeld aan een viertal vrouwen. De vrouwen waren in de provincie Atjeh, waar de islamitische wetgeving (sharia) van kracht is, schuldig bevonden aan deelname aan illegale gokpraktijken.

Na het vrijdaggebed kwamen meer dan duizend mensen bijeen om de voltrekking van het vonnis te aanschouwen. De vrouwen kregen elk zeven slagen op de rug met een rotanstengel omdat ze om geld een kaartspel hadden gespeeld. De autoriteiten hadden 65.000 rupiah (vijf euro) van de vrouwen in beslag genomen.

Atjeh is de enige provincie in het overwegend islamitische Indonesië die de islamitische wetgeving toepast. In juni kregen vijftien mannen er al lijfstraffen na schuldig te zijn bevonden aan gokken, dat in strijd is met de sharia..

Een kudde koeien in het Russische Oeral-gebergte krijgt dit najaar ondermeer marihuana in plaats van gras te eten. De politie zegt dat ze geen andere keuze heeft.
,,Als we de marihuanaplanten weghalen, hebben de koeien deze winter niets te eten. Dus we moeten ze wel marihuana laten grazen.

Bibliotheek leent behalve boeken ook homo's uit

BEST - De bibliotheek in Almelo leent in september niet alleen boeken, maar ook homo's, zigeuners en islamieten uit. Een Zweedse bibliothecaresse bracht haar Nederlandse collega op het idee. Zij wil met 'Vergeet het vooroordeel', zoals zij haar project in Malmö heeft genoemd, stereotypen doorbreken.

Boekenlezers kunnen in Almelo voor een klein uurtje bijvoorbeeld een islamitische vrouw met een hoofddoekje uit een plaatselijk asielzoekerscentrum 'lenen' en haar vragen stellen, die ze normaal niet durven te vragen.

De drempel is lager, zei zondag Henk Krol, hoofdredacteur van de Gay Krant. "Het brengt mensen dichter bij elkaar." Krol heeft directeur Jan Krol van de Almelose bibliotheek gesproken.

De directeur, die in zijn vrije tijd voorzitter is van homobelangenvereniging COC in Twente en de Achterhoek wil tien personen gaan uitlenen. De lezers mogen 'hun' minderheidsgroep naar keuze meenemen naar het café naast de bibliotheek.

Saddam vows to sacrifice for Palestine

Facing trial soon on charges he massacred fellow Muslims, Saddam Hussein has vowed in a letter to sacrifice himself for the cause of Palestine and Iraq, urged Arabs to follow his path and used language implying he would become a martyr for the Arab cause.

The letter, published in two Jordanian newspapers on Sunday, was delivered through the International Committee of the Red Cross to an old friend of Saddam's now living in Jordan.

Those who made the letter public said the man refused to be identified.

It was believed to have been the first letter since Saddam was captured in December 2003 sent to someone other than a family member.

"My soul and my existence is to be sacrificed for our precious Palestine and our beloved, patient and suffering Iraq," the writer of the letter said.

Tayseer Homsi, secretary-general of the Jordanian Arab Baath Socialist Party, said the missive had been delivered through the ICRC to an "independent Jordanian political figure who wished to remain anonymous".

ICRC involvement

Rana Sidani, a spokeswoman for the ICRC's Iraq delegation in Amman, said: "The ICRC has confirmed the authenticity of the message published in the Jordanian media."

"The ICRC collected the message," she said. "It was censored by the detaining authorities before being handed over to the ICRC for distribution."

A friend of Saddam's family, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid straining relations with them, said the "handwriting is 100% Saddam's".

Saddam's two daughters, Raghad and Rana, live in Amman after having fled the US invasion two years ago.

Expected trial

The ousted leader was expected to stand trial in Iraq this fall on charges that could bring the death penalty. His letter appeared to include his musings on that possible fate.

"Life is meaningless without the considerations of faith, love and inherited history in our nation," the letter said.

"It is not much for a man to support his nation with his soul and all he commands because it deserves it since it has given us life in the name of God and allowed us to inherit the best," he wrote in a what appeared to be a clear call to Arabs to follow in his footsteps.

"My brother, love your people, love Palestine, love your nation, long live Palestine," the document concluded.

Baath Party

The Jordanian Baath party, which publicised the letter and espouses ideology similar to Saddam's now-defunct Baath Party, has no formal links to Iraq.

Homsi, the party chief, said the letter's recipient gave his party a copy of the letter two days ago.

"The Jordanian man wished to remain anonymous, he's an old friend of Saddam, he's not a member of our party nor is he a party functionary," Homsi said, declining to identify the man.

The letter became public as Iraq geared up for a series of trials, the first beginning this August, which involves Saddam's alleged role in the 1982 massacre of an estimated 150 Shia in Dujail, north of Baghdad and in retaliation for an assassination attempt on the former leader.

Saddam is a Sunni and his minority sect in Iraq ruled over majority Shia, Kurds and other ethnic groups until he was ousted in April 2003 after the US-led invasion.

Others indicted in the Dujail massacre are Barazan Ibrahim, intelligence chief at the time and Saddam's half brother; former vice-president Taha Yassin Ramadan; and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, at the time a Baath Party official in Dujail.

The assassination attempt was organised by the Dawa Party, whose members include current Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

Also on Sunday, Iraq criticised Jordan for allegedly allowing Saddam's family to fund an Iraqi network seeking to destabilise the country.

The rebuke appeared designed to blunt bad publicity for Iraq after Jordanian police detained an undetermined number of Iraqis and other foreign Arab suspects in the Friday rocket attack that barely missed a US warship in Jordan's Red Sea resort of Aqaba.

Ad-Dustour and Al-Arab Al-Yawm, Jordan's second and third largest dailies, said the letter was given to them by Homsi's party at a press conference on Saturday.

’We accepteren dingen van Israël die we van geen enkel ander land zouden accepteren.’ Dat zegt H. van Mierlo, voormalig minister van Buitenlandse Zaken in de Zembla-aflevering ’Zwijgen over Israël’. ’Dat heeft te maken met de oorlog. Er zijn wel heel erg veel joden uit Nederland weggehaald. Ik heb het gevoel dat er vanuit verborgen schuldgevoelens anders naar Israël wordt gekeken.’

Zembla schetst een beeld van de vriendschap tussen Nederland en Israël, die altijd erg hecht is geweest. In de jaren ’70 steunde toenmalig minister van Defensie Vredeling Israël met wapenleveranties, zonder zelfs zijn eigen premier Den Uyl daarover in te lichten: ’Staatsrechtelijk hoort het niet, maar ik heb altijd zeker geweten dat ik handelde uit naam van het Nederlandse volk.’ Nederland heeft de politiek van Israël altijd gesteund, maar daarin lijkt sinds kort enige kentering te komen. Oud-minister van Buitenlandse Zaken H. van den Broek: ’Ik vind dat ook Israël ter verantwoording moet worden geroepen over datgene wat het land nalaat om een voedingsbodem van verzet en weerstand te breken.’


Bedreigende telefoontjes
Veel joden zien Israël nog steeds als een veilige vluchthaven en dat verklaart waarom zij emotioneel reageren op verwijten aan Israël. ’Wij vinden dat de schuld eenzijdig bij Israël gelegd wordt en aangezien wij ons identificeren met Israël, ervaren wij dat als anti-joods’, aldus de orthodoxe rabbijn Evers.

Kritiek op Israël wordt daarom nogal eens gezien als antisemitisme. In Zembla komen niet alleen politici, maar ook journalisten en columnisten aan het woord die daar ervaringen mee hebben. RTL-correspondent C. Mus zegt dat hij na een kritische uitzending over Israëlische acties in bezet gebied regelmatig bedreigende telefoontjes krijgt: ’We weten je te vinden als je terug in Amsterdam bent.’ H. Meyer, lid van Een Ander Joods Geluid, is voor verrader uitgemaakt. In Zembla zegt hij: ’Op het moment dat je kritiek hebt op die onmenselijke daden, zoals het vernietigen van huizen, dan ben je antisemiet. Israël is dus boven alle kritiek verheven.’

In Zembla leggen E. Margalit, de Israëlische ambassadeur in Nederland, en R. Naftaniel, directeur van het Centrum voor Informatie en Documentatie Israël (CIDI), uit waarom zij altijd alert reageren op kritiek.

City officials have moved to ban a rabbi suspected of infecting infants with herpes from performing an ancient circumcision rite, prompting religious Jewish leaders to plead with Mayor Bloomberg to intervene.
Bloomberg sat down at City Hall yesterday with dozens of ultra-Orthodox rabbis, who said they are concerned that such a ban would set a bad precedent, according to several people at the meeting.

The mayor "basically accepted a suggestion that the time should be given for both sides to sit down and iron this thing out," said Rabbi David Niederman, who praised Bloomberg.

But several sources said the mayor promised that the city would never ban a religious practice outright - but also held firm that he "has an obligation" to uphold laws.

The Daily News first reported in February that the city Health Department was investigating whether Rockland County-based Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer gave herpes to a baby through the practice of metzizah b'peh - in which the rabbi uses his mouth to suck blood from the circumcision wound. The baby later died.

On Aug. 1, the Health Department sent Fischer's lawyer a draft of an order banning the rabbi from performing metzizah b'peh in the city, officials said. Fischer has until next week to respond.

But the threat of such an order alarmed the ultrareligious community.

The controversy is still roiling at a time when Bloomberg, who has had a somewhat strained relationship with the Orthodox community, is looking to repair things before the November election.

Pakistan to launch remote sensing satellite system

ISLAMABAD, Aug 21: Pakistan plans to launch a self-controlled Remote Sensing Satellite System (RSSS) at a cost of Rs19.3 billion to ensure strategic and unconditional supply of satellite remote sensing data for any part of the globe over the year.

According to sources, the project will be executed by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) over a period of six years. President Gen Pervez Musharraf has approved the project in principle.

The project will require another recurring expenditure of about Rs150 million per year and overall working expenses of about Rs1.15 billion.

The president, sources said, had directed Suparco to develop the capability to make and launch different types of satellites, specially, communications, remote sensing and weather satellites.

Pakistan’s space programme must contribute in the areas of mass education, information technology, communications, agriculture, mineral development, mapping and geographic information system, atmospheric sciences, environment and pollution monitoring and in various areas of national security, the president said.

On the completion of the project, high resolution satellite images will be available for national defence and security in any critical time. They will also enable universities and non-profit organisations to obtain satellite remote sensing data and carry out analysis for other application areas.

The project will help Pakistani engineers acquire comprehensive know-how and technology transfer. Thus, it will be a vital support for future in-house Pakistan remote sensing satellites of world standards to meet demands of enhanced capabilities.

This will help Pakistan coup with the commercial and strategic needs and open a new era of applied research and new trends for planning and implementation of public sector development projects for socio-economic uplift of the country.

Pakistan entered into space era in 1990 with the launch of its first experimental satellite Badr-1, an indigenous effort of Suparco, launched in low earth orbit by a Chinese vehicle from XI Chang Launch Centre.

Second satellite of Pakistan, Badr-2, launched in 2001, carried an experimental earth imaging payload.

The RSSS is highly sophisticated, application oriented, high resolution satellite that will be first of its kind in Pakistan to directly address the demands of today’s market.

111-jarige Saudische krijgt ID-kaart

Koe gearresteerd na ongeval
De politie van Giron in Colombia heeft een koe gearresteerd en hem opgesloten in de gevangenis, omdat deze een gevaar op de weg vormde.

Het dier raakte tijdens zijn wandeling over straat een vrouw op haar fiets. Ze kwam er met kleine verwondingen van af. De politie vond het desondanks nodig om de koe de cel in te gooien.

"Iemand die een ongeval veroorzaakt, wordt toch ook opgesloten? Voor een koe maken we geen uitzondering,"aldus een politiewoordvoerder. De politie is nog op zoek naar de eigenaar van de criminele koe.
