Mofaz: Shooting in Ramallah shows terror threatens Abbas' life

By News Agencies and Haaretz Staff

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Thursday that a shooting at Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' headquarters proves that terror is threatening his life and he must expedite and upgrade his battle against it, Israel Radio said.
Mofaz spoke during an interview with reporters after meeting with officials from the Bush administration in Washington. During the meeting, Mofaz complained to the officials, saying the PA was not doing enough to fight terror.

Gunmen linked to the ruling Palestinian faction Fatah fired at Abbas's compound on Wednesday, causing no casualties.

The half-dozen assailants, who also rampaged in a restaurant in the West Bank city of Ramallah, identified themselves as breakaway Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades members who had rejected a request by the Palestinian Authority to lay down their arms.

"We wanted our voice to be heard," one of the group told Reuters. "We want our rights and we want protection."

A militant representing the al-Aqsa leadership said that the splinter group, comprising former members of the Palestinian security forces, were reluctant to resume their old jobs without a guarantee that their employment terms would be improved.

Abbas and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared a cease-fire in February, stirring hopes of an end to more than four years of fighting. Under the deal, Abbas pledged reform while Sharon granted temporary immunity to militants who disarm.

Abbas left his headquarters shortly after the shooting but came back for consultations with security chiefs, Palestinian officials said. On his return, some 70 al-Aqsa militants also arrived, demanding to speak to the president face-to-face.

Though it spearheaded the decades-old Palestinian quest for independence, Fatah has been driven by infighting over corruption allegations and challenged by hardline Islamist group Hamas.

Abbas is from Fatah's old guard but favors reform to rein in militants, boost law and order, solidify the truce and secure a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But he lacks the absolute authority of his predecessor, Yasser Arafat.

Some militants, used to life on the run, fear they will be sidelined in the new nation-building. Earlier this month, a group of al-Aqsa gunmen broke up a meeting of Fatah reformists.

Abbas orders crackdown on Ramallah militants shooting attack

By Haaretz Service and News Agencies

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas ordered a crackdown on militants in the West Bank town of Ramallah early Thursday after a group of gunmen fired at his headquarters compound while he was inside, security officials said.
The group of 15 militants attacked the compound Wednesday before rampaging through the city, damaging several restaurants and forcing shops to close, witnesses and officials said. There were no injuries reported.

Also Thursday, police in the West Bank town of Tul Karm demanded the surrender of seven armed Palestinians who burned down a Palestinian checkpoint overnight.

Internal fighting has plagued the Palestinian territories for months, largely the result of a breakdown in authority and command caused by more than four years of fighting with Israel that severely debilitated the security forces and other Palestinian Authority institutions.

Mofaz: Terror threatens Abbas
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Thursday that the shooting at Abbas' Ramallah headquarters proves that terror is threatening his life and he must expedite and upgrade his battle against it, Israel Radio reported.

Mofaz spoke after meeting Bush administration officials in Washington. During the meeting, Mofaz told officials that the PA was not doing enough to fight terror.

Abbas - who was elected PA chairman in a Jan. 9 vote after the November death of Yasser Arafat - has vowed to bring law and order to Palestinian areas, and reform his overlapping and corruption-plagued security forces.

In a meeting with security officials after the shooting spree, Abbas ordered the militants arrested, more troops deployed throughout the city and compensation paid to the businesses that were damaged, security officials said.

An Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades spokesman on Thursday said the organization condemned the overnight shooting attack on Abbas' headquarters and the subsequent violent incidents around Ramallah, Israel Radio reported.

All those involved in the incident will be severely punished, the spokesman said. He added the militant group will not hand over their weapons to PA security forces.

The gunmen - who said they were members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an armed group linked to the ruling Fatah movement - said they went on their rampage after Palestinian security officials forced six of them out of the Ramallah headquarters, where they had sought refuge after Israel began hunting down fugitives shortly after violence erupted in September 2000.

Arafat had allowed more than 20 fugitives to remain in his compound, and Abbas had followed suit.

A Palestinian security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the security forces asked the six militants to either hand over their weapons or leave the compound after "they were involved in kidnappings, blackmailing, harming people, shooting them."

"They were warned many times to stop their behavior and actions," the official said.

Another security official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, warned that the security forces were "considering taking harsh steps against them."

"They have crossed the red line. They attacked the presidential headquarters. They are defying the Palestinian Authority and now we have to take harsh steps against them, otherwise they will control the city and spread chaos," the official said.

An Al Aqsa spokesman, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, denied the gunmen belonged to his group and called them "criminals who should be in jail."

Palestinian mob burns down PA roadblock
Late Wednesday a mob of angry Palestinians burned down a Palestinian roadblock outside Tul Karm after officers shot and wounded a man, security officials said.

The officers stopped three men, reportedly suspected car thieves, and after an argument, a police officer shot and lightly wounded one of the men.

A large group of men, some of them armed, then stormed the roadblock. The police fled, and the protesters burned several tents used to house the officers and the Palestinian flag that flew above.

On Thursday morning, police issued an ultimatum to seven of the protesters to turn themselves in.

"If they don't, there will be war," one official said on condition of anonymity.
