US and UK soldiers killed in Iraq, continued clashes
A statement by the American army said that one of its soldier was killed in a bomb explosion on the road between Sameraa and Tikrit, to the north of Baghdad. Meantime, the Iraqi police said that one British soldier was injured in a bomb explosion placed on the roadside in Tareq area north of al-Basra. A spokesman for the British defense department confirmed this news. In Baghdad, four Iraqi police members were killed and other five injured in an attack by explosives targeting positions used by the Iraqi police in al-Madayen city south of the capital. Three civilians were killed and other 9 injured in a booby trapped car explosion on Sunday evening near al-Mustafa restaurant on the western bank of Tigris river in al-Kazemeyah quarters. Meantime, the Iraqi Islamic Party announced it found the body of one of its leaders kidnapped on August 13 and his family received a request for a ransom in order to release him. A statement for the party said that Amer Abdul Jabbar was the official for Raghiba Khatoum for the party and member of the municipal council in al-Azameyah in the center of Baghdad. |

Two US soldiers, 19 Iraqis killed
Two American soldiers were killed on Monday according to US military sources when their vehicle overturned during a military operation near the town of Tel Afar. Nineteen Iraqis were also killed when an explosion at a Baghdad checkpoint killed eight Iraqi troops. Another eight Iraqi policemen and three civilians were killed when their bus was ambushed outside of the Taramiyah police station, according to the Los Angeles Times. Constitution talks In the midst of such unrest which continues to plague the country, Iraq's political groups continue to negotiate the future of their nation, seeking a final draft of the country's first democratic constitution. On Sunday, several of Iraq's Sunni political parties called on the United Nations and the US to intervene after claiming to have been unfairly left out of the final stages of talks regarding Iraq's constitution between Shiite Muslim and Kurdish groups. Sheik Abdel Nasser Janabi, a leading Sunni negotiator called for delaying the constitution deadline as a result. "We need more time to negotiate," he said. "I see an attempt to exclude the Arab Sunnis". Iraq's transitional National Assembly is expected to approve a final draft of the constitution on Monday after having postponed the deadline last Monday in the hopes of reaching a compromises on several issues in the constitution. Much of the controversy regarding the constitution lies in the issue of greater regional autonomy, which both Shiites and Kurds lacked under the regime of Saddam Hussein. Other issues which have been cause for controversy include the division of oil revenue and the role of Islamic law in Iraq's government. So far Sunni groups have opposed measures which would grant regional autonomy to Kurdish and Shiite groups, fearing that it would ultimately result in the fracturing of Iraq into separate countries. Some Sunnis have threatening to respond by defeating the constitutional at the when it is presented to voters in an Oct. 15 referendum. . Iraqi sources have expressed loss of hope to forge an agreement between the three groups. The Sunni position, he said, is "directly contrary to what the others want". Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi, a Shiite, said that the document was 97% complete and predicted that it would be forwarded to the National Assembly in time for passage today, according to the Associated Press. Saddam letter In a letter published on Sunday, former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein said that he would sacrifice himself for Arab nationalism and to end foreign occupation. "I sacrifice my soul and very existence to the Arab cause and liberation of our homeland from foreign liberation," Hussein said in the letter which was apparently heavily censored by the U.S. military. He went on to say that "Life is meaningless without the considerations of faith, love and inherited history in our nation". The letter had apparently been given to International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) by a Jordanian friend of the former leader, who he referred to as : "My brother, love your people, love Palestine, love your nation, long live Palestine." |

British soldier wounded in Basra
Britain has about 8,500 troops in Iraq, mainly in the country's south. A British soldier has been wounded by a roadside bomb in the city of Basra, in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said. The soldier received cuts when the Land Rover he was in passed the bomb, in the Tariq district of the southern city. "He received some medical treatment but his injuries were not serious," a Ministry of Defence spokesman said. The spokesman said the incident was being investigated. Three UK troops and two British security guards have died in attacks in Basra since mid-July. Britain has about 8,500 troops in Iraq, mostly based in the south of the country. A total of 92 British soldiers have died since the start of the action in Iraq. |

Hindus call for ban on Bollywood Mutiny epic
A Bollywood movie about the rebellion against British rule by Indian soldiers in 1857 which received rave reviews in the UK has run into opposition from an unexpected source: Hindu nationalists at home. The Rising, a 150-minute epic filmed in English and starring the heart-throb Aamir Khan, has been a box-office success in the US and Britain, grossing more than £220,000 in its first weekend in the the UK. Directed by Ketan Mehta, the film is the first time the Indian version of events during the so-called Indian Mutiny has reached a popular audience in the West. But in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, real-life home of the hero of the movie, Mangal Pandey, there are calls for it to be banned from residents of the village that claims to be Pandey's home as well as the Hindu nationalists. Pandey was an Indian soldier serving under the British. On 29 March 1857 he attacked and injured a British sergeant and an officer on parade at Barrackpore, near Calcutta. His actions were to have extraordinary consequences, triggering rebellions by soldiers across north India that came close to overturning British rule. The rebel leader is widely understood to have been incensed at rumours that Indian soldiers were being issued a new cartridge sealed with fat from cows and pigs. The soldiers were under orders to break the seals by biting the bullets but biting cow-fat was religiously unacceptable to Hindus, as was biting pig-fat to Muslims. The issue became a catalyst for a population simmering with resentment against British rule. Though the film presents a generally heroic picture of Pandey, The Rising's detractors have accused Mr Mehta of "distorting historical facts". In Nagwa, believed to be Pandey's home village, people are angry that there is no mention of their village in the film and demanded one be inserted. More seriously for Mr Mehta, the demand for a ban has been echoed by far more influential voices, including ministers in the state government of UP. The politicians are enraged at scenes which show Pandey visiting a brothel and drinking alcohol, and want the film banned unless these scenes are cut. Since Pandey is seen as a stout defender of Hindu beliefs, scenes of him enjoying illicit pleasures have caused uproar. The objections have been further fuelled by Indian resentment over long-standing British claims that, far from standing up for principle at Barrackpore, at the time Pandey was intoxicated on bhang, a cannabis derivative. The claims have traditionally been dismissed in India as propaganda. The uprising of 1857 was an episode from which neither side came out spotless. There was brutality on both sides. Indians forced British who had surrendered on to boats they then sank. British women and children were hacked to pieces and their remains thrown down a well. The British tied live Indian soldiers across the mouths of cannon and blew them to pieces. |

'Half Asian children' in poverty
India "has the highest number of poor children in Asia" Nearly half of Asia's 1.3bn children live in poverty, denied basic needs, says a new report. India has the largest number of poor children in Asia, with 80% of its 400m young severely deprived, it says. Child aid organisation, Plan, author of the report, has pledged to spend $1bn on poverty reduction in 12 Asian countries over the next decade. It also wants rich nations to reduce subsidies given to their own farmers and to cancel Third World debt. 'Serious impact' The "Growing up in Asia" report states that 600m Asian children under the age of 18 lack access to either food, safe drinking water, health or shelter. Of those, 350m were described as "absolutely poor", meaning they do not have access to two or more of a child's essential necessities. "Asia has more than twice as many severely deprived children as sub-Saharan Africa," said Michael Diamond, Plan's Asia regional director. "This scale of child poverty will have a serious impact on Asia's future prospects, unless it is addressed now." Despite high growth rates in countries like India and China, millions of families were being left behind, according to the report. Among the causes, the report said, were the pressure of rapid population growth on scarce resources, lack of access to education, health care, clean water or sanitation, caste discrimination, and weak governance and corruption. In India, 60% of all children were classed as "absolutely poor", with almost half of all children under five malnourished. Plan said India also had the highest number of working children in the world. China, the report said, had made "great strides in poverty reduction in recent years". Only 13m of its 380m child population were deprived, according to Plan's report. |

Six Indians arrested in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 22: Malaysian police have arrested six Indian nationals for allegedly possessing 20 kgs of party drug Ketamine, media reports said. The six were arrested last Thursday. The arrest comes close on the heels of the arrest of three Indian nationals along with 156 kg of Ketamine on August six. Investigators believe that following the first seizure, drug syndicates are dealing with smaller quantities, New Straits Times reported. Police has declined to speculate who could be behind the syndicate's activities but have not ruled out the possibility that its members may be affiliated to mafia gangs led by Chhota Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim. Ketamine is smuggled into Malaysia in its raw form which apparently is easily available in India, the newspaper said adding that syndicate members in Malaysia processed the contraband producing Amphetamine type pills most of which are smuggled to China. The daily said recent intelligence reports indicated that organised crime syndicates from India had spread to Malaysia and vice versa. “Previously associated with Gold Wafer smuggling and Underground Banking, these syndicates have now turned to drug trafficking,” it said. |

RPT-Indian women bear brunt of AIDS epidemic--experts
NEW DELHI, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Nearly half of people living with HIV/AIDS in India are women, and the number is expected to rise further, health experts said on Monday, because of trafficking of women across South Asia for prostitution. India had an estimated 5.134 million people infected with the HIV virus in 2004, roughly the same as South Africa which has the world's highest number of people with the virus. Of these, 49 percent were found to be women and young girls, N.S. Dharamshaktu, additional project director of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), told an AIDS conference. Earlier estimates put the figure at 40 percent. Trafficking of women from India's impoverished neighbours, Bangladesh and Nepal, was fuelling the spread of the disease, experts said. Dharamshaktu said thousands of people, especially women and children, were fleeing the conflict in Nepal between government forces and Maoist guerrillas trying to topple the monarchy. Many of these women ended up in the brothels of India. "Nepal has a security problem and the fallout is on India," he told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference. "Unless we close the trafficking tap at the source ... more and more women will be trafficked." NACO estimates there are more than 200,000 Nepali women -- mostly under 18 years of age -- working in brothels in big Indian cities such as Bombay, New Delhi and Calcutta. India's huge 180-million mobile population -- including millions of migrant workers -- makes tackling the HIV epidemic more challenging. Experts said women in rural areas were being infected by their husbands who visit sex workers in cities. "How can a woman in a rural area demand her husband use a condom?" Denis Broun, the India coordinator for UNAIDS, said. "Women in rural areas who are illiterate and have dropped out of school are most vulnerable to the epidemic." |

De man kon wel degelijk praten en zou afgelopen weekeinde uitgebreid uit de doeken hebben gedaan dat hij in het verleden psychiatrische patiënten heeft verpleegd en hun gedrag heeft nagedaan. Bovendien zou de man helemaal niet goed kunnen pianospelen, maar steeds dezelfde pianotoets hebben aangeslagen. Het ziekenhuis waar de man werd verzorgd, wilde geen commentaar geven. Analysis: Pakistan, China work on fighters
Washington, DC, (UPI) -- The multirole JF-17 aircraft Pakistan is building jointly with China is a mid-tech plane that fills in the gap between lower and upper technology, Brig. Shafqaat Ahmad, Pakistan's defense attaché in Washington, said. Pakistan also is buying 24 F-16 jet fighters from the United States for its air force, leading to traditional rival India saying Islamabad has started an arms race in the region. Pakistan denies the charge. "While we are acquiring the F-16s to meet our immediate defense requirements, the JF-17 Thunder aircraft that Pakistan is producing jointly with China has nothing to do with any arms race," Ahmad said. He said some of the Chinese aircraft now in use in Pakistan would need replacement soon and the government had decided that sharing technology with China would be preferable to buying more aircraft. He said the bulk of these aircraft, three out of four, would go to China. This explanation, however, does not satisfy India. Reports in the Indian media, quoting defense experts, say the JF-17s can be used to deliver nuclear weapons. The reports cited Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's remarks, during Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao's visit to the country last month, that Pakistan wanted to keep a minimum level of conventional and unconventional defensive deterrence. In New Delhi, this was interpreted that the JF-17 could be used to deliver nuclear weapons. During the visit, Wen assured Musharraf China would help defend Pakistan's "sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity." In India, this was interpreted as meaning while China wants to improve its relations with New Delhi, it will continue its decades-long close defense and strategic ties with Pakistan. Other Indian experts, such as Ashutosh Mishra of the Institute of Defense Studies and Analyses in New Delhi told reporters there was no reason to fear the JF-17s. He said these are slightly improved versions of the F-7 aircraft, which were equivalent to India's Russia-made MiG-21s, Pakistan now needs to phase out. India's Mig-21s have been replaced by newer versions. The joint China-Pakistan venture first began in the late 1990s when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif still ruled Pakistan. The aircraft was first called Super-7, then renamed FC-1 in 2001 and are now being produced as JF-17. The planes are being built at Kamra, a cantonment located between Islamabad and the northwestern city of Peshawar at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, an organ of the Pakistan Ministry of Defense. China's Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Corp. is also assisting Kamra in developing a new jet trainer known as Karakorum-8, or K-8. Traditionally, Pakistan had depended on the United States for its weapon requirements, but when in 1990 the United States stopped all arms sales to Pakistan following a dispute over its nuclear program, Islamabad began to look at other options. The sanctions grounded the F-16 aircraft Pakistan had purchased from Washington in the 1980s. Other mid-tech aircraft, such as F-6s, F-7s, A-5s and Mirages that Pakistan bought from other sources were aging and needed to be replaced. So in February 1992, Pakistan negotiated a deal with the China Aero-Technology Import and Export Corp., which had invited the Pakistan Air Force to invest in the Super-7 program in return for full participation in design and development, with exclusive co-production rights of up to 59 percent of the Super-7 airframe. The air force received Islamabad's approval in October 1994. JF-17 is a lightweight, multirole, day-night, all-weather fighter with maximum takeoff weight of 2,700 kilograms, maximum speed 1.7 M, ceiling 16,500 meters, max weapon load 3,900 kilograms, range 3,000 kilograms. It would be equipped with a Russian engine, probably RD-33, that powers the MiG-29. The Pakistani version would carry a European avionics suite that includes multimode Pulse Doppler radar, inertial navigation system and multi-function displays. Pakistan says it will fulfill 70 percent of its air force's operational requirements. The JF-17 is designed to be fitted with a vast array of weaponry. Weapon load includes short- and medium-range anti-air missiles like AIM-9P/PL-9/Magic 2 and PL-11/Aspide/AIM-7E. In addition it includes new fly-by-wire flight control system and a true beyond visual range attack capability. More important for Pakistan is that it will train the nation's engineers and mechanics in the art of aircraft making. The first flight of the aircraft took place Sept. 04, 2003, and after flight testing, the Pakistan Air Force decided to start serial production. PAF plans to buy about 150 aircraft. China plans to acquire 250 aircraft. Pakistani officials said they also intend to sell the JF-17 to other countries interested in mid-tech aircraft. While briefing journalists at Kamra Monday, Air Vice Marshal Shahid Latif, the chief project director for the JF-17, denied media reports Russia had cancelled an agreement with China to provide engines for the aircraft. He said China continued to receive the engines and the supply will continue in the near future. He said the JF-17 was a lightweight aircraft that can be refueled in the air. "The JF-17 is strategically very important for our air force and it also has far-reaching implications both for the national defense and economic prosperity," he said. He said under the agreement between the two countries, half the fighters would be produced on an assembly line in China while the other half would be made in Pakistan. U.S. defense experts told London's Financial Times the JF-17 was no threat to the United States. "If you want hundreds of planes to look size a sizable air force, it comes in handy," Richard Aboulafia, aviation analyst at the Teal Group, told the paper. "It does not come in handy in any other circumstances. If you put it head to head against an F-16 it would probably last about 5 seconds." Michael O'Hanlon, defense analyst at the Brookings Institution, said the United States was less concerned with fighter jets produced by China. "These are a couple of middle-range technological powers," said O'Hanlon to the newspaper. "I worry a lot more about Soviet-era MiGs and Su-27s and Israeli command and control and any help with their pilot training." |

Roma-familie N. betrok ongeveer 3 jaar terug twee woningen aan het Acaciaplein en de Berkstraat, in de volkswijk Pathmos. De 45-jarige vader zou volgens buurtbewoners geregeld voor levensgevaarlijke situaties hebben gezorgd, door keihard door de straat te scheuren met zijn auto. Aan commentaar op zijn rijgedrag van buren had hij lak. Toen er vanuit de zigeuners tijdens het volleybal met glas richting buurtkinderen zou zijn gegooid, keerde de hele straat zich tegen hen. Circa 200 bewoners van de volkswijk, die flink gedronken hadden, zetten de aanval in. De 45-jarige vader kreeg daarbij rake klappen. De politie wist ternauwernood te voorkomen dat twee zigeunergezinnen werden gelyncht. Wel werd er brand gesticht in een woning van de Roma's. De twee Roma-gezinnen, met enkele jonge kinderen, zijn ondergebracht op een geheim adres. Ze willen naar een andere buurt verhuizen en keren niet meer terug in Pathmos. bron Wat een helden!

The Network is responding to an on-going police crackdown on cyclists that began on Aug. 27, 2004, when the New York Police Department arrested 264 participants and bystanders at a community bicycle ride known as "Critical Mass", two days before the Republican National Convention. In total, in less than a year, over 500 cyclists have been arrested for participating in community rides, hundreds of bicycles have been seized by the NYPD, and the City of New York has aggressively pursued a lawsuit barring the environmental non-profit Time's Up! from promoting or even discussing Critical Mass. The network's "Free NYC Cyclists" campaign will include letter writing to New York City officials, public awareness activities in dozens of countries, and if necessary the deployment of international legal observers to New York City. "Wherever in the world the right to use non-automotive transportation is seriously infringed upon, we will apply international pressure to call attention to and stop the injustice," says Randall Ghent, co-director of the Network's International Coordination Centre. "We are confident that Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the NYPD will come to recognize that Critical Mass is a beneficial community event, supported by people all over the world." Group bicycle rides are not illegal. Under New York law, bikes are vehicles, so cyclists have the same rights and are subject to the same traffic laws as drivers of motorized vehicles. Moreover, in New York City, cyclists are permitted to ride more than two abreast, according to § 4-02(e) of NYC Traffic Rules. However, Assistant Chief Bruce H. Smolka, head of NYPD's South Manhattan Borough Command, has declared before a court that he views any group of more than seven cyclists as a "procession" requiring a special permit. In addition, investigators have found that official police videos were edited in at least one case to exclude from court proceedings video evidence showing cyclists behaving peacefully and lawfully. Critical Mass rides are held monthly in 400 cities around the world, involving cyclists of all ages. For eight years, the rides in New York City have been a popular community activity with a celebratory atmosphere often described as a "carnival on wheels." There were no serious incidents or disagreements between cyclists and police before Aug. 27, 2004 and the monthly rides attracted thousands of participants. To this date, many cyclists continue with Critical Mass in New York City, despite the police crackdown, but rough treatment by the police has made the rides too dangerous for families with children.  Pakistani scientist rejects money, UK nationality: Man of Year award verdict today LAHORE, Prof Dr Aurangzeb Hafi, a Pakistani scientist contesting for the prestigious international title "Man of the Year in Interdisciplinary Sciences" has rejected the "unofficial" offer that he accept British citizenship to be a winner. He also turned down the offer of two million pounds sterling (or Rs210 million) for providing the original manuscript of his magnetosectorial model, on the basis of which he has joined the race, saying the invention was a trust of his country which he would not like to barter for personal gains. The offer was made by the London-based International Scientific Council on Tuesday, only hours before the jury -- the council itself -- was due to sit in judgment on who should be decorated. Dr Hafi was told that he should approach the British High Commission in Islamabad and get nationality within half an hour. However, the contestant for the award rejected the bait on the plea that he is a Pakistani and would like to win or lose the race in the same capacity. The International Scientific Council is reluctant to honour a Pakistani, arguing that Islamabad is not a member of the Commonwealth. A Pakistani citizen, Jalil Khurshid, moved the relevant authorities in London on Tuesday and got the verdict stayed for two days. Jalil reportedly said that the reservations expressed by the jury could be answered legally and thus he should be given time to prepare the case. The request was granted and now the name of the winner would be announced on Thursday (today). Dr Hafi made a breakthrough in the modern scientific research by developing the magneto sectorial model for the first time in the world. His research would vivid far-looking and long lasting effects on agriculture, environmental and medical sciences, space biology, magnetohydrodynamics and multi-disciplinary sciences Dr Aurangzeb Hafi is one of the six scientists shortlisted out of 1,376 from 900 universities in 60 countries by the International Scientific Council, headquartered in Britain. Musharraf spreekt joods gehoor toe
(Novum/AP) - De Pakistaanse president Pervez Musharraf heeft de uitnodiging van een joodse organisatie in New York aanvaard om te komen spreken over zijn campagne ten behoeve van de gematigde islam. De redevoering is gepland na een VN-top die van 14 tot 16 september in New York wordt gehouden en waar een groot aantal regeringsleiders wordt verwacht, zei Jack Rosen, voorzitter van de Council for World Jewry. In 2003 drong Musharraf er in een toespraak bij de moslims in de wereld op aan een strategie van 'verlichte gematigdheid' toe te passen om de huidige moeilijke tijden door te komen. Hij is dat beleid sindsdien blijven bepleiten als de beste manier voor moslims en niet-moslims om extremisme en terrorisme te bestrijden. Rosen zei dat hij en twee andere bestuurders van de Council for World Jewry Musharraf in mei in Islamabad hebben ontmoet en hem toen hebben gevraagd te komen spreken. Onlangs heeft de Pakistaanse president laten weten de uitnodiging te aanvaarden, zei hij maandag. Vorig jaar zei Musharraf in een rede voor de Islamitische Conferentieorganisatie, waar 57 moslimlanden deel van uitmaken, dat er twee kanten zijn aan de door hen bepleite strategie. Iraqi base attack leaves 14 dead
The blast injured Iraqi and US personnel at the jointly run base A suicide bomber has killed 10 people in an attack on a joint US-Iraqi base in the Iraqi town of Baquba which led to three more "friendly fire" deaths. Eight policemen died in the explosion along with a US soldier and a contractor, according to US military and Iraqi police reports. And three members of an Iraqi special forces unit in the area were killed in error by US troops, Iraqi police added. Elsewhere, an Iraqi minister said she had survived an assassination attempt. The explosion in Baquba, 50km (30 miles) north-east of Baghdad, occurred in a dining area in the Provincial Joint Co-ordination Centre. According to the police, US soldiers responding to the blast apparently mistook the special forces soldiers for insurgents and opened fire. 'Cowardly act' Environment Minister Narmine Othman, an Iraqi Kurd, said on Tuesday she had survived an assassination attempt a day earlier by gunmen who attacked her convoy. The minister was travelling through the Oudhaim region, between the northern city of Kirkuk and Baquba, when attackers opened fire, injuring three of her guards. "The cowardly act will not deter me from doing my job towards Iraq and fellow citizens," the AFP news agency quotes Ms Othman as saying. Two Iraqi policemen were also reported killed in a clash with insurgents during a raid in Haydariya, north of the city of Najaf. Iraq's fledgling security services have been a frequent target for insurgents. |

'Geen bewijs geheim Iraans kernwapenprogramma'

In Iran gevonden sporen van hoogverrijkt uranium blijken volgens The Washington Post afkomstig van vervuilde nucleaire apparatuur, geïmporteerd uit Pakistan. De doorgaans welingelichte krant baseert zich op Amerikaanse regeringsbronnen. Wetenschappers uit onder meer de VS, Japan, Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Rusland kwamen de afgelopen negen maanden bijeen om data van de nucleaire waakhond van de Verenigde Naties, het Internationaal Atoomenergie Agentschap IAEA, te onderzoeken. Volgens deze wetenschappers komt het hoogverrijkte uranium dat twee jaar geleden in Iran werd aangetroffen, precies overeen met hoogverrijkt uranium in Pakistaanse centrifuges. Deeltjes uranium zijn in Pakistan op nucleaire apparatuur terechtgekomen die later aan Iran is geleverd. Hoogverrijkt uranium is een essentieel element voor een atoombom. |

Pornosite prikkelt soldaten in ruil voor oorlogsfoto's
AMSTERDAM - Een Amsterdamse pornosite geeft Amerikaanse soldaten gratis toegang in ruil voor foto's van verminkte Afghanen en Irakezen. De webmaster wil op die manier een beeld van de oorlog tonen, dat "nog niet eerder door de media werd getoond". Dat schrijft de Standaard op haar site. De pornosite is opgezet als een forum, maar 23 forums zijn ontoegankelijk, tenzij de gebruiker betaalt. De gebruiker krijgt negentig dagen toegang, als hij tien dollar betaalt of zelfgemaakte pornofoto's van zijn vrouw of vriendin opstuurt. Tussen de links met pornobeelden staat ook een oproep aan Amerikaanse soldaten in Irak en Afghanistan. Zij krijgen gratis toegang tot de hele site als zij zelfgemaakte oorlogsbeelden doorsturen. Amerikaanse soldaten hebben inmiddels al talloze gruwelijke foto's opgestuurd naar de site. De foto's zijn vrij toegankelijk en uitermate wreedaardig. Bovendien krijgen de foto's cynische titels mee als "Cooked Iraqi", "I see red" of "Another dead guy". Enkele foto's zijn close-ups van menselijke ingewanden, met het quiz-achtige onderschrift "raad eens wat dit is?" erbij. |

Nederland krijgt eerste vrouwelijke generaal
Uitgegeven op 24 augustus 2005 om 09:21 uur (Novum) - Nederland kent vanaf woensdagmiddag zijn eerste vrouwelijke generaal. Staatssecretaris van Defensie Cees van der Knaap (CDA) bevordert kolonel Leanne van den Hoek tot brigade-generaal, meldt het ministerie. Van den Hoek is geen onbekende binnen de landmacht. Zo werd zij vier jaar geleden al de eerste vrouwelijke bataljonscommandant.
