Stewart's 3 TD passes fuel Steelers NFL.com wire reports GameCenter | Play By Play | GameBook | Photos PITTSBURGH (Dec. 23, 2001) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are frontrunners to get to the Super Bowl. That's about as improbable as suggesting a few months ago that Kordell Stewart would be one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. Stewart kept his remarkable comeback season going, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another, and the Steelers roughed up Detroit rookie quarterback Mike McMahon in a 47-14 romp Sunday. The Steelers, who last were 12-2 during their 1978 Super Bowl championship season, gained a first-round bye. They can wrap up home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by winning Sunday at Cincinnati. Pittsburgh has won seven straight. The Steelers missed the playoffs the previous three seasons but, suddenly, anything less than the Super Bowl would be a disappointment. "We don't want to come this far just to say we had a good season," Joey Porter said. "We're in the best situation now to get there." McMahon, returning to his hometown to make only his third career start, lost two fumbles and threw an interception in the first 18 minutes. The mistakes led to two touchdowns and a 27-7 Steelers lead. Stewart, who had only two 200-yard passing games the previous two seasons, went over 200 for the eighth time this season by going 17 of 26 for 226 yards. He had touchdowns of four yards to Matt Cushing, five yards to Hines Ward and 19 to Plaxico Burress. Stewart, one of the NFL's worst-rated passers a year ago, also scrambled for a two-yard touchdown after the second of McMahon's two momentum-swinging fumbles in the first quarter. "When things are going your way like this, all you can do is ride the wave and see how far it takes you," Stewart said. Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala ran for 126 yards as Jerome Bettis sat out a third consecutive game with a hip and groin injury. It was the Steelers' first 100-yard game by anyone except Bettis since Stewart ran for 102 yards against Carolina on Dec. 22, 1996. The Steelers, tied with St. Louis for the NFL's best record, didn't relax against the Lions (1-13), who are tied with Carolina for the worst record and finished 0-8 on the road. The Lions have lost to both Pittsburgh and St. Louis. "They're as good as anybody we've played this year," Lions defensive lineman Luther Elliss said of Pittsburgh. "Not to take anything away from Green Bay, but they don't throw the package at you that Pittsburgh does." And they threw it quickly at McMahon. McMahon, stumbling and slipping repeatedly on the rain-slick grass, lost his footing on the game's third play and fumbled. Jason Gildon returned it 27 yards with 27 seconds gone, the fourth touchdown this season by the Steelers' league-leading defense. McMahon came right back to throw one of his two touchdown passes to tight end David Sloan, this one a 10-yarder, only to lose another fumble and throw an interception to Dewayne Washington on the Lions' next two possessions. "Anything that could go wrong basically happened," McMahon said. "You can't make mistakes like that, turn it over three times early in the game, against a team as good as that." The Steelers, already up 14-7 after Stewart directed a 77-yard drive that ended with Cushing's catch, had to go only 15 yards to score on Stewart's run following McMahon's second fumble. The McMahon-thrown interception didn't result in any scoring as the still-erratic Kris Brown missed a 48-yard field goal, one of his two misses Sunday and 14 this season. It hardly mattered as the Lions never slowed the Steelers, who outgained them 429-151 and outrushed them 215-74. The Lions were held to minus seven yards and didn't get a first down in the second half. The Lions, who recently lost nine in a row by single-digit margins, were blown out a week after beating Minnesota for their only victory. "We weren't overlooking this team, not after all those close losses," Gildon said. "But we also wanted to go right at them. We didn't want to give them a chance." GAME NOTES Tommy Maddox, the MVP of the XFL's one and only season, had a five-yard touchdown run after replacing Stewart. The interception was McMahon's first in the NFL. Lions RB James Stewart left with a sprained right ankle following his second carry and didn't return. The Lions have more losses in Heinz Field than the Steelers, who are 6-1 at home. Detroit also lost an exhibition game there. Ward had seven catches and now has 87 overall, breaking Yancey Thigpen's team single-season record of 85.
