A lot of people here in Eastern Germany don’t want me to interview them. They are afraid that they will be arrested. Fortunately, I still managed to find someone who wanted to answer my questions. It's a 54 year old woman.
What do you think is going on in Germany at this moment?
What I think is going on in Germany right now… What I know is that all of a sudden there was a wall, built by people form the Soviet Union, where we will no more be let through.
Was denken Sie was derzeit in Deutschland los ist?
Was ich denke was derzeit in Deutschland los ist…
What do you think of the Berlin Wall?
I think it’s terrible. I just got the feeling that I’m nowhere safe anymore and that I can be arrested by the government any moment. A big part of my family lives in West Germany and my 24 year old son was so pigheaded that he tried to flee to the West. But he didn’t make it., He was shot while he was climbing the wall and died right away.
Would you rather move to the West?
To be honest, yes. I heard that there is a lot more freedom there and that the economy there is also a lot better. And, of course, I could see the rest of my family again.
If someone told you that there was a spot on the wall where you could easily cross over to the West, would you take the risk and go?
No, I don’t think so. Even though I really want to go, I don’t want to risk my life for that. And because of what happened to my son I now know how easily they will shoot you. So no, that’s no option for me. I’d rather lay low until everything is over.
Are you, under these conditions, still happy with your life?
I hardly dare to say, but actually not. But with all this stuff here in Germany it’s hard to be happy I think.
I also interviewed someone in Western Germany. A 24 year old man.
What do you think is going on in Germany at this moment?
Germany is divided into four occupation zones by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. And a few days ago the Soviet Union built a wall around Eastern Germany. I think they have done that because the people from Eastern Germany fled to the West all the time.
Was denken Sie was derzeit in Deutschland los ist?
What do you think of the Berlin Wall?
To be honest with you, I don’t really mind. The only thing that isn’t very nice is that my grandma lives in the East. The last time I visited her she was fortunately doing really well, so actually I don’t have anything to worry about.
Would you rather move to the East?
No, definitely not. I’m really enjoying myself here and except my grandma my whole family is here and also all of my friends.
If there would be a spot on the wall that isn’t guarded really good, would you cross that to pick up your grandma so she is here with you in the West?
No, I won’t do that. My grandma is in really good health and also all her friends are with her. And I wouldn’t be brave enough anyway to risk my life twice.
Are you, under these conditions, still happy with your life?
Yes, I think so. I’m really having a good time with my friends. I even got married a few weeks ago.
