"Failed to initialise video" & other probs.

Greetings
Initial problem was couldn't get a game called Crimson Skies (CS) to install on a newly installed WinXP on this brand new system. Kept getting to about 25-30% of installation and would crash, restart & run scandisk and say it had recovered from a serious error.
Partitioned & reformatted to allow 98se in primary & XP in logical D drive.
Installed CS into 98se no probs, worked well, played online no probs (what a diffference from my old P3 450 Slot1).
Installed XP into D: drive and then attempted to install CS.
Latest Via drivers, latest nVidia driver, latest AC 97 sound drivers. Same problem as in 1st attempt...still crashing. Tried installing other application programs as well and same thing.
Really frustrating as XP & CS work fine on my old P3.
Next problem was that suddenly 98se (in primary partiton) wouldn't load CS when I went to play it.
Would get to the display resolution select & only option is 480 x 600 from the drop down list but when u hit OK it crashes & says "failed to initialise video". This has really got me stumped as it was working well.
So reformatted & reinstalled both OSs again, latest drivers all round again. Now 98se allows istallation of CS but continues with the "failed to initialise video" thing when I try to play it.
This has really got me beat. Gotta b some conflict between Windows and some motherboard driver.
Have tried older video drivers for both 98se and XP but same problem persists.
Could the AC'97 sound drivers b the prob? Should I disable onboard sound & install my Creative Vibra 128?
Please help me, this is so frustrating as it should b such a good system.

ISDN software modem.
Dual boot Win98se (in primary) & WinXP (in D: )
