Mahmoud Abbas Issues Executive Order to Confiscate Illegal Weapons
Chairman of the PA Mahmoud Abbas has issued an executive order forbidding the activities of all armed militias. The Palestinian government was called on to confiscate all illegal weapons. Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Palestinian Authority, June 27, 2007. ------ betekent dit het begin van het einde van de Al Aqsa Martelaren Brigade? Nouja, niet als je dit leest: " (...) Abu Yousuf, a leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Ramallah, told WND Abbas' claims the Brigades will disarm "are more of a message meant for the Israelis, the Americans and the international community." "No one (from Abbas' office) addressed a single member of the Brigades and asked us to turn in our weapons," he said. Zacharias Zubeidi, leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, told WND the decree from Abbas' office for armed groups to be dismantled "has nothing to do with the Brigades. It's meant for Hamas. Abbas recognizes the Brigades as a legitimate source of resistance." Together with the Islamic Jihad terror group, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades took responsibility for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years. The Brigades regularly carries out shooting attacks and has taken credit for firing hundreds of rockets from the Gaza Strip aimed at nearby Jewish population centers. (...) In line with pledges made at Monday's summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Abbas' office today issued a decree for all armed groups to turn in their weapons. "On the basis of the declaration of a state of emergency in the Palestinian territories, and by virtue of my authority, all armed militias, groups and brigades that do not belong in practice to the security services shall be treated as illegal organizations," read the first order. "The government must halt the phenomenon of armed groups, prevent the bearing of arms and confiscate guns, explosives and any type of weaponry purchased illegally, since they endanger the public order," the decree continued. Fatah offers Al Aqsa Brigades leaders shelter Sources in the Al Aqsa Brigades said officials from Abbas' office encouraged them in recent days to tell members of the international news media they are ready to hand in their weapons. "But on the ground, not a single weapon has been turned in and it will remain this way," a Brigades source said. Brigades sources said Fatah officials have invited some Brigades leaders to seek shelter in PA security buildings in the West Bank. Zou het dan toch?
Fayad warns mosque preachers: Incitement won't be tolerated By The Associated Press Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayad delivered a stern warning Thursday to hundreds of Islamic preachers, including Hamas supporters, saying his government will not tolerate incitement in mosques. Fayad's warning also included his government's intentions to collect all weapons from Palestinian militants. Fayad's meeting with some 800 Muslim clergy marked the latest attempt to stem the influence of Hamas in the West Bank, following the goup's violent takeover of Gaza earlier this month. Hamas is influential in many mosques in the West Bank and Gaza, and has been using Friday sermons as a vehicle for spreading its message. Preachers have also been actively involved in politics. Security forces have arrested dozens of Hamas activists in the West Bank, and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is trying to dry up Hamas' funding with a review of all private organizations. The Palestinians said their crackdown on Hamas was complicated by an Israel Defense Forces raid in the West Bank city of Nablus earlier Thursday. "We view this aggression as a way to undermine our efforts to provide security and end the chaos," Fayad said. Israel described it as a routine operation targeting militants involved in plots to carry out attacks, and said troops found weapons and explosives in Nablus. Five Israeli soldiers were wounded in the operation, one of them seriously. Tens of thousands of residents were confined to their homes by a curfew. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has promised to bolster Abbas' government in his struggle with Hamas. Olmert's spokeswoman, Miri Eisin, said the Israeli government is committed to working with Abbas, but would not risk the safety of its own citizens. "We will go forward with full strength to strengthen Abbas, and full strength to stop the terror," she said. Earlier this week, Abbas issued a decree barring militants from carrying weapons, but it's doubtful he'll be able to disarm Fatah's violent offshoot, the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. Fatah gunmen said they need their weapons for future confrontations with Hamas and Israel, and will not surrender them. Previous attempts to collect illegal weapons ended in failure. In his meeting with clergymen Thursday, Fayad was accompanied by Abbas' top security official, Interior Minister Abdel Razak Yehiyeh. "We will collect weapons and replace them with pens and books," the minister told the crowd. "The phenomenon of militants is very dangerous, and we want to stop it in all forms." Fayad told the preachers to take politics out of their sermons. "We won't allow them (mosques) to be turned into places of incitement and intimidation," he said. "It's the responsibility of men of religion to ... present religion as a way of tolerance, not as a cover for bloodshed." In Nablus, seven of eight Hamas members of parliament are preachers, said Suhair al-Dubai, a moderate clergyman from the city. "The government has realized how important the mosques are in forming and leading public opinion," said al-Dubai, who attended the meeting with Fayad. "But Hamas is very well organized in mosques ... The government can restrict them, but not eliminate them because they are part of a structure and can always find a way to play a political role." Mohammed Abu al-Hasan, a Hamas preacher from the West Bank town of Jenin, said clerics would continue to speak their minds, regardless of any government directive. "We will not accept these restrictions and we are going to respond with our own message in this Friday's sermons," he said.

Lebanese troops kill 3 Palestinian protesters trying to return to refugee camp
By Reuters Lebanese troops fired at Palestinian civilians demanding to return to their homes at a besieged refugee camp on Friday, killing three protesters and wounding 50, witnesses and hospital sources said. They said the soldiers opened fire first into the air as hundreds of refugees, including women and children, tried to storm through an army checkpoint and head to Nahr al-Bared camp, scene of nearly six weeks of intense fighting between the army and the al Qaida-inspired Fatah al-Islam militants. When the crowd did not disperse and attacked soldiers with stones and sticks, the troops fired automatic rifles at the protest inflicting the casualties. (...) Lebanon's Defense Minister Elias al-Murr has claimed victory and an end to major combat against Fatah al-Islam. But the army says that Nahr al-Bared remains a closed military zone as it tries to force the militants holed up inside to surrender. Security forces are barred from entering Lebanon's 12 Palestinian refugee camps by a 1969 Arab agreement. Much of the camp, originally home to 40,000 refugees, has been destroyed and mines and booby traps litter its buildings and alleys. (...) http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/S...ubContrassID=1

Lebanon 'to erupt in 1 week'
Syria calls on citizens to evacuate Lebanon, reports say; Expert: Civil war possible Yaakov Lappin Syria has called on its citizens to leave Lebanon ahead of an expected "eruption" in that country, Arab and Iranian press reports have said. The media reports were translated and made available by MEMRI in a special dispatch on Sunday. "In the past few days, Arab and Iranian media reports have pointed to the possibility that Lebanon's current political crisis may become a violent conflict after July 15, 2007," the MEMRI dispatch said. July 15 comes one day before a special UN Security Council meeting which is expected to discuss the possibility of stationing international experts on the Syria-Lebanon border, in order monitor the ongoing illegal cross border arms traffic to Hizbullah, thought to be originating from Iran and Syria. The UN Security Council is also expected to meet next week to discuss a key report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a development which may bode badly for Syria. "On July 5, 2007, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported that Syrian authorities had instructed all Syrian citizens residing in Lebanon to return to their country by July 15, 2007. The next day, the Israeli Arab daily Al-Sinara similarly reported, on the authority of a Lebanese source close to Damascus, that Syria was planning to remove its citizens from Lebanon. Also on July 5, the Lebanese daily Al-Liwa reported rumors that Syrian workers were leaving Lebanon at the request of the Syrian authorities. In addition, the Syrian government daily Al-Thawra reported that Syrian universities would accept Syrian students who were leaving Lebanon due to the instability there," MEMRI said in its report. Within Lebanon itself, the Hizbullah-led opposition threatened to establish a "second government" through "historical steps" in mid July, according to senior Hizbullah officials quoted in the Lebanese media, MEMRI added. 'Civil war possibility' A violent clash next week in Lebanon is a real possibility, but would not be aimed at Israel, General (res.) Yaakov Amidror, a former senior officer in the IDF's Military Intelligence Directorate, told Ynetnews. He added, however, that such an internal conflict could "deteriorate" to the point where Israel is targeted by rocket fire. "This is a warning and a threat, directed not towards not us, but towards the Lebanese government, and against activities by the UN, the US, and the Europeans in Lebanon," Amidror said. "Can this deteriorate to the point of firing on Israel? It doesn't look like it now, but it can get there," he said. "This signals distress more than power," Amidror said. "If they (Iran, Syria and Hizbullah) were confident, they wouldn't go for such extreme maneuver that would expose them to the fury of Sunnis and Christians in Lebanon. Few in Lebanon want Nasrallah to take power. Shiites are the largest sect, but they make up 40 percent of the population. There are 60 percent who don't like the idea of a Shiite takeover at all," Amidror explained. He added that tensions could erupt into a full scale civil war in Lebanon, with Shiites on one side and Sunnis, Christians, and Druze on the other. "Civil war occurred in Lebanon in the past, there is no reason to think it can't happen again," he warned. Amidror added that Shiites were determined to take power in Lebanon out of an ideological motivation, and a wish to mimic events in Iraq. "What's happening in Lebanon is part of a wider Middle Eastern conflict in which Shiites are trying to push Sunnis out of power. This is part of a conflict against Israel in a wider context, but it is primarily a Shiite-Sunni struggle. This is more proof that Israel is not the source of strife in the Middle East, but rather it is the Sunni-Shiite conflict," he added. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7...422565,00.html Hopen maar dat het gebakken lucht is Hier is overigens de Memri Dispatch waarover gesproken wordt: http://memri.org/bin/articles.cgi?Pa...on&ID=SP164807

Situatie rond Palestijns kamp Libanon escaleert
