Schools in Britain and the USA

Full-time education is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 16 in England, Scotland and Wales (4 and 16 in Northern Ireland as in the Netherlands). Most children receive free education at state schools, but some 7 % go to private schools (‘independent schools’), for which parents have to pay very high fees (= schoolgeld).
1988 saw a major reform in education: the setting up of a National Curriculum (= leerplan) , which prescribes exactly what subjects should be taught, and which subjects should be tested at the ages of 7, 11 and 14. Scotland has always had a slightly different school and exam system.

Exams
England and Wales: at the ages of 7, 11 and 14 all pupils are assessed by their teachers and take national tests (SATs = Standard Assessment Tasks) in the core subljects of English, mathematics and Science (and Welsh in Wales): fourteen-year-olds also take tests in other statuary subjects.
At the age of 16, pupils take the GCSE (= General Certificate of Secundary Education) in up to 10 subjects, depending on their academic capacities. At the end of the sixth form A-levels (= advanced levels) are taken. Three A-levels are required to enter University. Sixth form pupils who want to study a wider range of subjects can take them as AS-levels (Advanced Supplementary) for one year. NVQs (National Vacational Qualifications) are undertaken by young people attending vocational training (= middelbare beroepsopleiding).

In Scotland the equivalents of GCSE is calles SCE (= Schottish Certificate of Education) and the equivalent of A-levels is Highers (= Higher Grade Scottish Certificate of Education).

In de US, high school students who want to attend college or university must taken the SAT (= Scholastic Aptitude Test) in their last or next-to-last year of high school, or the ACT (= American College Testing Program). Both are national, standardise tests, but not government-controlled.

Marks / Results / grades (= cijfers)
In British schools marks for course work and tests are often given in letters: seven grades from A – G (A is top). A-levels are classified by five grades from A down to E, GCSE results by grades / levels from 10 down to 4.
Grades in American schools can range from A down to D (D being the equivalent of our 5). F (= fail) indicated that work is not up to standard or that the student has not passed the test.

Some more information on schools
Public schools are not ‘public’ at all, but expensive private schools in Brittain. Famous is Eton which was founded in the Middle Ages (‘public’ then means that is offered free education to boys from the general public, i.e. not of noble birth). At public schools there is usually strict discipline, a strict hierarchy among the pupils and there are a lot of traditions and rituals. From the 19th century onwards there have also been public schools for girls. Children are often put down for a place at birth and from the age of eight sent to prep (= prepatory) schools, which prepare them for the public school entrance exam. Many prominent politicians have a public-school background. N.B. in Scotland and the United States a ‘public school’ is a state school, providing free education for the same as a Dutch ‘openbare school’

Boarding schools, i.e. schools where children live during term-time, are more common in Britain than in the Netherlands. All public schools are boarding schools (but not all boarding schools are public schools!)

School uniforms are worn in most primary and secondary schools in Britain, but not by sixth-form students.

Most pupils do not bring sandwiches to school (as pupils do in the Netherlands), but they have lunch at school. Schools are responsible for providing school meals, which are free of charge for families with income support (= uitkering).

Pupils both in Britain and the USA usually come home from school much later than their Dutch ‘colleagues’, because schools offers extracurricular activities, such as sport, music lessons or drama groups, which in the Netherlands are organised privately out of school.

Higher education
There are soms 90 universities and polytechnics (= hogere beroepsopleidingen, hogescholen) in Britain. Some famous universities are Oxford and Camebridge, which back date to te 13th century, and St. Andrew’s in Scotland dating from the 14th century. At universities founded in the 1960’s, such as East Anglia and Warwick, most students live on campus (zoals aan de TU Twente in Enschede). University entrance in Britain is not as simple as our country, because it is selective. Sixth-form pupils apply to a number of universities and are selected on basis of their A-level results and an interview. Those with better exam grades are more likely to be accepted. Students studying for a first degree are called undergraduates. It usually takes three years to get a Bachelor’s Degree, and a further one or two years for graduates (=students with a first degree) to get an Master’s Degree (= doctoraa), for which more academic research is required.
