--------------------------------------------- Summary: Billy (a ten year old boy) is going to a lake with his friend Gumpy, to find some fish. Two white girls, Lori and Jenny see the 2 black boys and they chase after the boys in order to grab them because that lake is their property. They start fighting and Gumpy knows to escape but Billy who is held by a far more stronger and bigger girl can’t get away. When the girls had enough of teasing Billy they let him go but Lori goes after him for the last time and that’s when Billy grabbed his knife and stung Lori in her breast and arm. Jenny runs to the village to get Lori’s brother to save her but Lori lost too much blood and she dies after some time. Sherrif Tom is trying to find Billy because he is a fugitive for murder. At home Cinder hears the whole story and when Billy got home and sherrif Tom was searching ‘the Patch’ she gave Billy some food and a blanket and send him to the bushes and he had to stay there until his mother calls for him. Sherrif Tom comes by the house but Billy isn’t there so he is gone soon. In the evening Billy got back out of the bushes and came home. After a while sherrif Tom came back and burned down a house, Cinder told Billy to run away again but this time the sherrif and other men from the village got dogs to catch Billy. After that they put him in a cell waiting for his courtday to arrive. In court the judge finds Billy guilty. Billy has to go to the state prison. In this prison Billy got a new friend called the “Sack man”. Sack man and Billy talk a lot to eachother. Sackman tells Billy that he has to believe in God. After a while the time came that Sack man had to be electrocuted. Now Billy is alone again and he is very afraid and sad. Reverend Sims tells him about God and he lets Billy believe that it is going to be alright, that there always be hope. One day his mother and his aunt Katey visits him and Billy is very happy to see the both. Words that make clear how Billy feel: “Ah don’t want to be electrics”. But unfortunately he still ends up in the electric chair, crying and calling for his mother. His last words were: “ Mama...Jezus gits me......” About the book: The story Billy is about a boy who tried to protect hisself against much older girls and exidently kills one of them. He is a boy of 10 years old who ends up in the electric chair. A story about racism and a unjustifal court of law. The theme in the book is undoubtfull the racism in the thirties in the USA. The story took place somewhere around Mississippi. The story is told from the point of view of a third narrator. Maincharacters: Billy 10 year old boy accused for murder. Gumpy a friend of Billy he is about 12 years old. Lori 15 year old boy who died in the story after Billy stung her. Cinder Billy’s mother Katey Billy’s aunt Sack Man Billy’s ‘jail friend’ Sherrif Tom Reverend Simms Something about the writer: Albert French's first novel Billy was published to great critical acclaim--hard-earned praise for a novelist who began writing to battle his way out of depression, and who is one of a growing but as yet curiously underappreciated group of contemporary African-American literary writers. Albert French's fiction has also been compared to Zora Neale Hurston's and Richard Wright's in its stark, naturalistic recreations of Black community life and the racism that inevitably impacts it. His intimate, dialectical language is used to elegiac effect in I Can't Wait on God. In the back alleys of Homewood, Pennsylvania, where the novel is set during five summer days in the Truman era, French establishes a microcosmic universe of ambition, despair, and survival. |
