Shakespeare - Sonnet 18
 

Ik heb wat problemen met dit sonnet van Shakespeare, ik kan de betekenis niet helemaal begrijpen en enkele vragen die ik er bij moet beantwoorden weet ik ook niet.
Ik hoop dat jullie mij kunnen helpen.


Sonnet XVIII

Shall I compare thee to as summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of may,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimm’d:
But thy eternal Summer shall not fade,
Nor lose Possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:
So long as men can breath or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Ik weet de betekenis al niet, laat staan dat ik het in mijn eigen woorden kan zetten.

4.What does he mean with 'this' in line 14?
5.The last two lines contain the conclusion; it would seem that the poet is quite sure of what he is saying. Explain how this effect is reached.
(cp. these two lines:
'wheter you return immediately
or remain behind is immaterial &shy -- these lines also contain 10 syllables but there is an essential difference.)

Voor zover ik het begrijp, vergelijkt de dichter iemand of iets met een zomerdag. Hij noemt 5 nadelen die een zomerdag heeft t.o.v. hetgene waarmee het vergeleken wordt.

1. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of may-
   Harde winden doen de bloemknoppen schudden [kan ze kapotmaken?];
2. And summer’s lease hath all too short a date-
   De zomer duurt veel te kort;
3. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines-
   Soms is de zon ("the eye of heaven") te fel [om te verdragen];
4. And often is his gold complexion dimm’d-
   Neem aan dat dit slaat op bewolking;
5. And every fair from fair sometime declines,
   By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimm’d-
   De zomer wordt langzaam aan minder.

2. Paraphrase line 11.

Paraphrase = parafraseren = omschrijven, omschrijvend verklaren. :)

Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade

"Noch zal de Dood opscheppen dat gij in zijn schaduw wandelt"

Het gaat over iets wat eeuwig is, dus niet dood gaat/zal verdwijnen. De Dood zal het dus niet te pakken krijgen.

"Eeuwige lijnen", je groeit met de tijd mee o.i.d.

Ik denk dat hier bedoeld wordt dat in de laatste twee regels alle woorden uit één lettergreep bestaan. Dat is namelijk het verschil met de twee regels die in de vraag worden genoemd: die regels bestaan beiden ook uit 10 lettergrepen, maar verdeeld over 9 woorden.

Op deze manier legt hij, denk ik, dus nadruk op het feit dat hij zeker is van zijn zaak.
