Hoi allemaal,
======================================================
A red dawn
Germany has fallen.
The proud sons of the Deutcher Reich lie dead.
Where once stood pillars, there are now ruins.
Where once flags flew, now lie ashes.
Soldiers march the streets, but they are not ours.
They are Russians, Americans, Canadian… British.
Their faces, black of battle, determined and grim.
Their faces speak of their hatred, their sense of justice.
Germany has truly fallen.
What we condoned becomes visible.
The horrors of six years of war.
Our war.
We can deny… we want to deny, that this is our doing.
Dreams of peace have ended in war.
Dreams of freedom, will end in slavery.
Dreams of fortunes of kings… but we shall live in poverty.
This is our curse, our own dreaded curse.
Called upon us by the madness of the masses.
The German people have fallen.
Beautiful girls hang their necks on the attics.
Valiant knights of boys, now lie as corpses.
Their beautiful young faces mauled by explosion, their young legs shattered with impact.
Mothers weep and fathers despair.
There are too few to bury the dead.
No hope remains in those eyes.
We shall fade.
Lands will stop to matter.
We are homeless in our motherland.
No mercy shall be shown: they will rip apart our nation.
Neighbours will be strangers, friends will disappear.
What is left is a shell of history, that once long ago united.
We shall be French or Polish, Dutch or Hungarian… Russian perhaps.
Our children shall not know of Germany, except perhaps in contempt.
We are losers to our own cause.
Yet we chose it so.
We cannot hide behind excuses, but must take the blame we have.
The deaths of millions has been our doing.
We gained nothing but defeat.
A better world shall be without us.
We wanted to be better than all others, and now we are but less.
A people soon forgotten.
Today we meet our end.
I feel remorse and sadness.
For all that I have lost.
I did gain much in wisdom of life.
Yet the use eludes me now.
What good will wisdom play.
When your daughters hang here dead?
When your sons died fighting a needless war.
That they couldn’t see to the end.
A new dawn is rising.
Understanding will be the key.
But shall I be part of that world?
Shall I ever again be free?
Yet the sun rises,
The days go on
I cannot remain in sadness.
I shall bury the dead
Marry a new wife
Find flowers to pluck
And songs to sing
I will build, I will work
For more than Germany
For more than Europe
For a better future
For mankind.
