>The pace of the film was much too fast - Cuarón went from the one big important event to the other, and so there was no tranquility in the film, everything was hurried, hurried, hurried. Agreed. This is my biggest criticism of the film. Stop and take a breath once in a while! Let the audience do the same! The LotR films weren't just one giant battle scene after another after another. >it was devoid of feelings for me Character work was sacrificed for action, action and more action. As I said in another post, you wouldn't have known this all tookplace over the course of one school year except for those short, gimmicky, transitional scenes showing the sudden changing of the seasons. Without that, a newcomer would think all of the events took place over the course of a few weeks or maybe even a few days. Sure there was snow in Hogsmeade, but that could've been up in mountains somewhere where there's simply always snow. No Halloween or Xmas meals, none of the other nice touches that give you the feeling you're going through an entire year with these people. >- Harry's Firebolt. (....) But in the film, Harry gets his Firebolt at the very end of the film, which is just not right for me the director eliminated the mystery of Harry wondering who had given him the Firebolt - it would have added to the suspense of the film, and Cuarón just ignored it. That really is a shame. Yup... No suspense there! >In the first two films, Hogwarts was located on some small mountain, in a lake. Now, the environment was much more different, and that's especially noticeable when we're at Hagrid's. I hadn't thought about that, but you're right about the grounds of Hogwarts looking really diffrerent. I like that Cuaron seemed to shoot everything on location and didn't use of the really cheap looking, soundstage matte shots Columbus did (watch the first movie again when the kids are outside in the daylight and they talk to Hagrid, it looks horrible). Still, some attempts to follow the basic setup of the first two movies should've been made. >- Cuarón included no Sir Nicholas in the film. Was John Cleese too busy doing voice work for Shrek 2 to do the HP film? Surely not. >- The Mobilicorpus spell. Cuarón left it entirely out of the film. You know that part of the book where Snape is knocked unconscious and Sirius and the others move him out of the Shrieking Shack (....) I'd forgotten about that. it's not essential to the story, but it would've been nice to see. Sort of like seeing Ron try to use the phone to call Harry. It means nothing to the story, but it would've been hilarious! More importantly, I can't believe they skipped the discussion of why Harry's patronus looked like a stag. Harry just seems like a nutjob thinking he might've seen his father saving him. OK, we know Harry really saw his future self, but the connection back to his dad was never made at the end! Likewise, there was no explanation made about the four names on the map, or how Lupin even knew the parchment was actually a map to begin with! Finally, changing Harry's talk with Dumbledore near the end to a conversation with *Lupin* was plain wrong. Lost were Dumbledore's sagely words about why it was important that Harry spared Peter Pettigrew's life. This not only draws an important distinction between Harry and Voldemort, but Dumbledore's statement that Harry will be glad he let Pettigrew live is essential. >Oh, and it was just too obvious that the actor playing Peter Pettigrew was wearing make-up, too (and I also think that actor wasn't doing a very good job of portraying Pettigrew). The part-rat, part-man thing was kinda ridiculous looking. The actor playing Pettigrew was a serious ham (I don't mean that in good way), and he wasn't at all how I pictured Pettigrew looking or acting. I wouldn't mind if they recast that part for next time. > the Gryffindor trio improved their acting skills, but not much. Emma Watson is the only one of them who made a good enough progress - I don't see that much promise in Daniel and Rupert. Dan or Rupert were great, and I think they just keep getting better. Dan has kind of tough job considering he has to start taking Harry down some really dark corners. I thought he captured that anger really well. Rupert's just naturally very funny and I think that comes through in the part. Sadly, he really wasn't given a whole heck of a lot to do this time around. >But you know, I hadn't expected for the quality of the acting of the veteran actors to diminish - Robbie Coltrane's Hagrid was less good than usual (same goes for Maggie Smith). I must say I'm a bit disappointed in David Thewlis' portrayal of Lupin - I had expected a little bit more from him. But he did a better job at playing Lupin than Michael Gambon did playing Dumbledore - I didn't like the way Gambon portrayed Dumbledore (...) Blame the scripting. The entire secondary cast was shoved aside and given very little to do in this film. It really bothered me. The actors are fine, they just didn't have much to work with. Again, a longer film with more character moments would've really opened things up. I liked Gambon's performance fine, and I'm really sorry he never had his fatherly chat with Harry near the end. if he had, you might've had a more favorable impression. I miss Richard Harris, but what can you do? Lupin was good, though he wasn't who I pictured in the part. Fromthe first time I read the book, I pictured Sam Neill as Lupin. After that, anyone they cast was probably going to seem disappointing to me. Still, David Thewlis playing Lupin was fine. >I really hope Mike Newell will do a much better job with "The Goblet of Fire" - the least he should do, is to stay as true as possible to the book and *not* rush his film. Otherwise, I'm going to be quite pissed. That's just it. The books keep getting longer, so trying to *shorten* the films and just rushing through the action isn't going to work. There's good *storytelling* involving great characters here, and both Cuaron and Steve Kloves seem to have lost sight of that. Rowling's tales get more complicated with each outing, and that needs to be reflected on screen. Now a lot of stuff can be cut out of the Goblet of Fire movie without losing the story (since the book is much too long and padded with unnecessary filler), but that's not the case with Order of the Phoenix. Trying to capture that excellent novel in just 2 & 1/4 hours could result in a horrendous blunder.

Die persoon heet Bellatrix en zei het volgende: I really dont think we can take anything JKR has to say about the movie at face value. I doubt she's free to speak her mind (I would almost bet there is a clause in her contract that she can't publicly criticize the movies). Not saying anything at all would be interpreted as a negative comment, so she says what she does like. Mind you, there have been positive things about all three films to say. Another reason she would never say anything negative would be that it would sabotage her relationship with directors for future movies. If we ever know what she truly thinks (both the positive and negative) it will be many many many years from now after all of the films have been out for a long long time. Hence I dont think its valid for people to post JKR quotes as a one fits all response to any negative comment about the movie. Cant we accept the good with the bad about each film? Hopefully we'll all live long enough to see the BBC put out a 40 hour miniseries that is everything us fans have dreamed of. Until then I remain... Yours, Bella Wat denken jullie?
