Quote: Posted 06/23/03 04:56:37 (GMT) by snowmit The first thing that I noticed when when I loaded SoU for the first time was that it comes packaged with a bonus minigame. I couldn't find it's name anywhere in the documentation, but I like to call it "Will SecureRom Recognize my CD?" (WSRRmCD for short). WSRRmCD is a kind of gambling sim. How it works is that once you click on the "Play" button your CD drive spins up for as many as two minutes while the game runs through a complex series of probability calculations to determine if you win or lose. If you win, NWN loads. If you lose, nothing happens at all. You repeat this process until either NWN loads or you decide you'd really rather do something else. It provides hours of entertainment. I'm all for innovation and I always appreciate bonus content, but I think that the WSRRmCD minigame is a failed experiment. For one thing, someone forgot to make the game optional. Sometimes you just want a quick game of NWN and the zaniness of WSRRmCD, while diverting, starts to feel like it's getting in the way. For another, there is a distinct lack of feedback in the game. A message saying something like "I'm sorry the Gods do not smile upon you this day. Try again?" would have really enhanced the fun of the game. Finally, WSRRmCD feels out of flavour in a product that otherwise focuses on fantasy combat and roleplaying. While I can appreciate the link between the randomness of the d20 system and of WSRRmCD, the stretch seems a bit too thin. Once you get past the minigame, the real strength of SoU shines through.
