Field narrows to six, Kerry moves ahead Lieberman drops out; Edwards takes South Carolina (CNN) -- Building on his momentum, Sen. John Kerry picked up five of the seven states holding contests for the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday. Sen. John Edwards kept his White House dream alive with a win in South Carolina and a surprisingly strong showing in Oklahoma. Tuesday's results represented the broadest assessment by voters so far -- both in geographic and demographic terms -- on the narrowing Democratic field. (Interactive: The day's seven contests at a glance) The verdict was sweet for Kerry, and to a lesser extent for Edwards. "We will take nothing for granted. We will compete everywhere. And in November, we will beat George W. Bush," Kerry told supporters gathered in Seattle, Washington, where caucuses are scheduled Saturday. The verdict was bitter for Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. The 2000 vice presidential nominee withdrew from the race after failing to win any state, even Delaware, where he had concentrated his campaign recently. "I have decided tonight to end my quest for the presidency," a gracious Lieberman told supporters at a meeting in Arlington, Virginia, calling it a "difficult, but realistic decision." The results provided little encouragement to former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, once viewed as the man to beat for the Democratic nomination. He failed to pick up a single first-place finish, and he has yet to win a single primary or caucus. On Wednesday, the campaigns move to Michigan and Washington, which hold caucuses Saturday; to Maine, with caucuses on Sunday; and to Tennessee and Virginia, which hold primaries next Tuesday. Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark plans a bus tour of Tennessee starting in Memphis and ending in Nashville. Edwards plans events in Tennessee and Virginia. Dean plans to be in Washington and Michigan. Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio -- who trailed badly in all seven states Tuesday -- will be in Washington for several events. Kerry will fly back to Boston but has nothing on his schedule. The victories for Kerry -- a 19-year veteran of the Senate from Massachusetts -- in Arizona, Delaware, Missouri, North Dakota and New Mexico strengthened his status as the front-runner. (CNN.com's interactive Election Calendar) The margins of victory were wide for Kerry in Arizona, Delaware, New Mexico and Missouri -- the night's biggest prize with 74 delegates. Clark leads in Oklahoma In Oklahoma, Clark held a slight lead over Edwards with all precincts reporting after Tuesday's vote. But the race was so close that no winner could be declared until the vote is certified by state elections board next week. Kerry was third. Nevertheless, Clark claimed victory in Oklahoma, telling supporters he "couldn't be prouder" of winning his first election. Edwards, a first-term senator from North Carolina, said his South Carolina victory and strong showing in Oklahoma demonstrated he had broad appeal. "I think South Carolina is a great test for winning in the South, winning among rural voters and winning among the African-American voters," an ebullient Edwards told CNN after addressing supporters in Columbia, South Carolina. Edwards had campaigned heavily in South Carolina, whose primary is known as the gateway to the South. A native of that state, Edwards stressed his Southern roots and said the South is critical for Democrats if they are serious about defeating President Bush in November. "We're second in Missouri, and in a hot contest for first in Oklahoma," Edwards said. "So this is a huge night for us." Exit polls indicated the economy was a key issue for voters in the primary states, suggesting Democrats will continue to hit Bush on his stewardship of the nation's fiscal house. Tuesday's contests extended West and South and involved far more minorities than in the earlier contests in Iowa and New Hampshire. African-American voters, for example, were a significant voting bloc in South Carolina, and Hispanic voters were a factor in Arizona and New Mexico. The Rev. Al Sharpton, the lone black candidate in the Democratic field, did not claim either first or second in South Carolina, despite spending a great deal of time in the state. Still, Sharpton was upbeat about the night's results, proclaiming he had exceeded expectations. "I'm very satisfied," Sharpton said. Dean's challenge Dean scaled back his efforts in South Carolina and other February 3 contests after disappointing defeats in Iowa and New Hampshire. Addressing supporters in Washington state Tuesday night, Dean vowed to stay in the race. "This is all about who gets the most delegates in Boston in July, and it's going to be us," Dean told supporters, referring to the city where Democrats will gather for the nominating convention. CNN estimates that Kerry will end up with about half of the 269 delegates that were at stake Tuesday, and Edwards is likely to get about a quarter. A total of 2,161 delegates are needed to win the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in July. (Where things stand: A delegate scorecard)

Kerry wins in South, Clark to quit Edwards: 'A two-person race now' Wednesday, February 11, 2004 Posted: 5:41 AM EST (1041 GMT) FAIRFAX, Virginia (CNN) -- Sen. John Kerry took two victories in Southern primaries Tuesday, driving one of his rivals with roots in the South out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark, who finished third in both Tennessee and Virginia, will announce his withdrawal Wednesday afternoon in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. The other Southerner in the race, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, finished second in both states Tuesday. He vowed to stay in the race. Not so for Clark, a former NATO commander but a political newcomer. "Gen. Clark has decided to leave the race," said Clark spokesman Matt Bennett. "I think probably the biggest reason is the tremendous momentum that Senator Kerry built coming out of the Iowa and New Hampshire races." "The mountain got too steep to climb." Kerry's twin victories in Tennessee or Virginia indicates his message appeals to Southern voters. "Once again, the message rings out loud and clear: Americans are voting for change East and West, North and now in the South," Kerry told a rapturous victory rally in Fairfax, Virginia. "[As] this campaign moves forward we will fight for every vote. We may be a little bit older, we may be a little bit grayer, but we still know how to fight for our country." (Transcript) In Virginia, Kerry won with 52 percent of the vote. Edwards got 27 percent, and Clark was a distant third with 9 percent. In Tennessee, with 98 percent of the precincts reporting, Kerry was winning with 41 percent of the vote, followed by Edwards with 26 percent and Clark with 23 percent. (Analysis of results) Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio are trailing far behind in single digits in both states. Nearly 90 percent of exit poll respondents in Virginia said they thought Kerry could beat President Bush in the fall. Among the nearly four in 10 respondents in both states who thought "electability" was more important than a candidate's stance on particular issues, Kerry was the choice by a greater than 3-2 margin. (Full story) Kerry has now won 12 Democratic nomination contests and lost just two. With his aura of inevitability rising, the senator has begun focusing his campaign against the Bush administration, especially on economic themes, a top issue with many Democratic voters. "Today, in a rare moment of truth-telling, they actually told us what they were doing. They said that shipping jobs, American jobs overseas, is good for America," he told supporters in Virginia. "Let them tell that to a 45-year-old worker with three kids who doesn't have a job, who's seeing the factory lost, who's seeing their job gone and has nowhere to turn." Exit polls also showed Kerry's appeal with key demographic groups, including African-Americans, veterans and seniors. More than two-thirds of Virginia's black respondents and nearly two-thirds of respondents 65 and older said they voted for him. Kerry also ran well among respondents in Virginia who said they were veterans, taking about half. Up for grabs Tuesday were 82 delegates in Virginia and 69 in Tennessee. To win the nomination, a candidate needs 2,161 delegates. (Delegate scorecard) Kerry is leading with 510, Dean has 182, Edwards has 163, Clark has 98, Sharpton has 12 and Kucinich has two. (Full story) Edwards 'going into March' While thanking his supporters in Tennessee late Tuesday, Clark never mentioned himself or his next campaign move. Instead, he praised the Democratic Party and talked of the need to defeat Bush. Later, Clark's spokesman announced that the retired Army general was leaving the race. But Edwards, who finished a distant second to Kerry, vowed: "This race is going into March." "We did what we needed to do tonight," he said. "It looks like it's narrowed itself down to a two-person race now, and we're excited about our prospects." "We're going to have a campaign and an election, not a coronation," the senator told supporters in Milwaukee. (Full story) Tuesday's results were not a surprise to analysts, who had predicted a Kerry win. The latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll showed Kerry is now the choice of a majority of Democratic voters nationally, well ahead of Edwards, Clark and Dean. The poll showed he is also in a virtual dead heat with Bush in a head-to-head matchup. (Full story) A month ago, Kerry was supported by just 9 percent. The latest poll marks the first time any of the Democratic hopefuls has gone above 50 percent. The Kerry bandwagon continued to grow Tuesday, as he received the endorsements of three members of Congress from Wisconsin -- Sen. Herb Kohl and Reps. David Obey and Ron Kind. He also came in first place in caucuses of Democrats living abroad, held from Friday through Monday in 19 countries. Kerry captured 55 percent of the votes and carried 17 countries. Dean came in second at 19 percent, carrying the most Democrats in Japan and Sweden. Dean says he won't quit Dean didn't put up a fight for either Virginia or Tennessee. He is planning to make a stand next Tuesday in Wisconsin, although he has backed away from earlier comments that the Badger State was a must-win for him. Rallying the faithful in Milwaukee Tuesday evening, Dean criticized his rivals for voting for the war in Iraq and Bush's education reform program, which he said made him a better choice to lead the fight against the GOP president in the fall. "My question to Wisconsin is, 'Who do you want to stand with you in the foxhole, the guy who'll stand up when it's right or the guy who just stands up when it's popular?'" (Full story) The next large contest is "Super Tuesday," when 11 states hold contests March 2. (Interactive election calendar) Kan een FB misschien de titel van de topic veranderen? Of is het beter een nieuwe thread te openen over de primaries?

Howard Dean plans to suspend his presidential campaign on Wednesday, a Dean official told CNN. Dean will leave his name on the ballot but "the campaign, as we have known it for the past 14 months, will cease to exist," the aide said. [...] Meanwhile, voters and analysts were taking stock on Wednesday morning of the surprisingly strong second-place showing by John Edwards, behind John Kerry's win of the Wisconsin primary. Edwards' strength could give the North Carolina senator new momentum, with the "Super Tuesday" batch of contests just two weeks away, on March 2. [...] Surge surprises even Edwards Edwards conceded that his closer-than-expected showing wasn't what he'd foreseen. He noted that polling put Kerry as much as 35 points ahead just two days ago. [...] The North Carolina senator also benefited from support from independent voters, who were allowed to cast a Democratic ballot Tuesday in Wisconsin. They broke for Edwards by a nearly 15-point margin. [...] Those contests will be followed by "Super Tuesday," which features the largest single batch of primaries and caucuses on the Democratic calendar. A total of 1,151 delegates will be picked that day in 10 states, including such electoral prizes as California, New York, Ohio and Georgia. gg, Dean.
