Small Explosives Go Off Outside British Consulate in Manhattan

Two small explosions went off in a large cement planter outside a building housing the British Consulate on Third Avenue in Manhattan early today, causing some property damage but no injuries.

The police were called to the scene, at 845 Third Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets, shortly before 4 a.m., said a police spokesman, Detective Noel Waters.

The blasts, which occurred as voters went to the polls in Britain in a general election, shattered glass in the front door of the building. The consulate is on the 9th and 10th floors of the buildings, which also houses other foreign-based offices.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg sought to play down the incident, saying New Yorkers should "go along with their lives."

He added at a news conference that "we do not at this point have any idea who did it, or any motive," adding, "but I think we will learn who did it."

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelley said at the same news conference that the devices were "novelty grenades" of the type that someone might keep on their desks.

They were not real grenades, he said, but they were packed with powder, which has been taken for testing to a laboratory.

Mr. Kelley added that the devices were probably set off by a lighted fuse, and that there was no indication that a timer had been used.

The United States-led war in Iraq has been a central issue in the British election, in which Prime Minister Tony Blair is seeking a third term. Opposition to the war has been strong in Britain, but there was no early indication that the blasts were related to the election.

The New York Police Department is carrying out an investigation, Detective Waters said. Several blocks of Third Avenue were closed off, causing early-morning traffic problems.

NEW YORK - Een Nederlandse medewerker van de Verenigde Naties wordt donderdag in New York verhoord door de FBI en de politie. De man, die werkzaam zou zijn bij de VN-wapeninspectie Unmovic, hield zich volgens Amerikaanse media verdacht op bij de plek waar donderdagochtend twee explosies hadden plaatsgevonden.

Bronnen bij de politie wilden niet zeggen of de man een verdachte is. Het Nederlandse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken bevestigde donderdagavond dat een Nederlander wordt verhoord. Een woordvoerder liet zich niet uit over zijn identiteit.


De VN bevestigden dat een staflid wordt gehoord. Een woordvoerder wilde niets anders kwijt dan dat de man bij het eerste onderzoek "aandacht verdient".

Letsel

De explosies vonden plaats voor 21 verdiepingen tellend gebouw aarin ook het Britse consulaat in New York is gevestigd. Ze richtten alleen lichte schade aan en niemand liep letsel op.

De explosieven waren volgens de politie geplaatst in een betonnen bloembak, die ook dient als versperring van het pand, dat op loopafstand van het hoofdkantoor van de Verenigde Naties ligt.

Kruit

De explosieven moeten volgens de politie zo groot zijn geweest als handgranaten en ze zouden in elkaar geknutseld zijn met kruit. De explosies klonken een halfuur voor het moment dat in Groot-Brittannië de stembureaus open gingen voor de parlementsverkiezing. Of er verband is tussen de explosie en de verkiezingsdag, is niet duidelijk.

Sommige Amerikaanse media leggen dat verband wel, ook al is er volgens burgemeester Bloomberg niemand geweest die claimt de explosies veroorzaakt te hebben.

Voorzorg

Het Britse consulaat is gevestigd op de negende en tiende verdieping van het gebouw in het centrum van Manhatten. Op het moment van de ontploffing was er slechts één persoon in het gebouw aanwezig. Uit voorzorg hebben onderzoekers ook andere diplomatieke vestigingen in New York op explosieven onderzocht.

The United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) was created through the adoption of Security Council resolution 1284 of 17 December 1999. UNMOVIC was to replace the former UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) and continue with the latter’s mandate to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological weapons and missiles with a range of more than 150 km), and to operate a system of ongoing monitoring and verification to check Iraq’s compliance with its obligations not to reacquire the same weapons prohibited to it by the Security Council.



misschien issie bevriend met die britse gast waarvan wordt gezegd dat ie zelfmoord heeft gepleegd maar andere lui weer denken dat ie vermoord is.
