Van 14 t/m 21 september vindt het ZXZW festival in Tilburg plaats, één van de tofste (underground) festivals in Nederland. De afgelopen maanden probeerden horden artiesten hun tourschema's rondom ZXZW rond te breien, en ook wij vissen voor onze Rotterdamse spin-off de nodige krenten uit de pap.

Anderhalf jaar geleden sinds de spraakmakende Live show met de Death Comet Crew, is hiphop innovator Rammellzee terug in Rotterdam. Allereerst geeft hij graffiti workshops op 17 en 18 september in het Hilton Hotel, waarna hij deze avond bij WORM een exclusieve solo performance zal brengen, ondersteund door een kleine expo van zijn eigen werk in de bar.

GAY AGAINST YOU (UK)

G.A.Y. is het duo Joe Howe (aka Germlin) en Lachlann Rattray (aka Yoko Oh No!) uit Schotland. Aan het slungelige voorkomen valt het moeilijk af te lezen, maar de bijna hysterische midi-core pop staat bol van de positieve energie en hitpotentie. Het is duidelijk waarom deze Weense band is vernoemd naar een exotische zangvogel soort. Flexibel en wendbaar als het beestje zelf manouvreren deze drie heren zich vakkundig door het nalatenschap van een paar decennia rock en weigeren daarbij voor één richting te kiezen. "Bulbul = 21st century sexy rock n roll killer riffs, quirky, goofy and slightly psychedelic electronica combined for some booty movin' music for the body and soul."

Nee, we hebben geen abonnement op Japanners hier, maar na het genot van Kishino Yuichi's varieté show, het Japanese New Music Festival en Polysics eerder dit jaar zullen wederom twee uitzonderlijk interessante artiesten uit Japan de prijzen in de wacht gaan slepen.

(Dit event stond aanvankelijk aangekondigd voor 24 september maar wegens het vervroegd vertrek van Shabushabu uit Europa waren we helaas gedwongen deze avond naar deze maandag de 22e te verplaatsen.)



SHABUSHABU
Een album titel als 'All in one Pot' doet al het één en ander vermoeden: performer Shabushabu maakt zeer eigenzinnige en frivole muziek die een kruidige mix is van electronica, hiphop, J-pop en traditionele Japanse muziek. Shabushabu uit Kyoto mag in één adem genoemd worden met underground helden als Ove-naxx en Oorutaichi (met deze laatste musiceert Shabushabu als 'Obakejaa').

We zijn er 99% zeker van dat dit concert tot de absolute hoogtepunten van 2008 zal gaan behoren. Bijna exact een jaar geleden was het bijna zover, SC3 zouden na hun optreden op John Zorn's Masada festival in Milaan naar R´dam komen, maar dat ging om logistieke redenen niet door. Nu, na drie jaar mailen en bellen, duwen en trekken, is het eindelijk zover: imperator Trey Spruance (in de meeste gevallen helaas ten onrechte enkel bekend als het brein achter wijlen Mr. Bungle) en z'n virtuoze volgelingen doen als zevenkoppige Ueber-band WORM aan. De meesterlijke muziek van SC3 laat zich, zij het volledig ontoereikend, kort omschrijven als een geniale cross-over van een veelvoud aan muziekstijlen; adaptaties van inheemse muziek uit het Midden-Oosten, surf, rembetika, blasfemische metal, het werk van (filmmuziek) componisten als Rahul Dev Burman, Ananda Shankar, Ernest Gold... SC3 zal maximaal gaan scoren. Voor wie dit mist komt alle hulp te laat.

Voor het gemak zou joe deze band als op vintage sixties psych/trash leest geschoeide lo-fi rock kunnen omschrijven, maar zoals in veel gevallen stellen de woorden het geluid buiten werking. Joe kunt beter zelf komen luisteren - en overtuigd worden! Ondanks de echo's uit het verleden (de Sic Alps filteren hun overheerlijke geluid door bakken delay voor dit effect) staat het duo met vier benen in het heden. Sic Alps anno 2008 = Mike Donovan en Matthew Hartman (ook CAT POWER en TOTAL SHUTDOWN) uit San Francisco.

Naast een erg coole naam te hebben gekozen kunnen we over Nero's Day At Disneyland zeggen dat hij de meest interessante nieuwkomer aan het 'breakcore' firmament is en Venetian Snares zal dit beamen. Een bizarre mix van Live gespeelde barok aandoende Rave Synths en overstuurde versplinterde breakcore-punk drumpartijen. Pinkler is één van de van de meest actieve electronica producers uit de megapolis Buenos Aires. Hij deelde het podium met grootheden als Akufen en Wighnomy Brothers. En hoewel z'n bpm meter het slakkengangetje van 90 niet voorbij gaat is zijn muziek zeer goed te genieten. Ambient, house en dromerige pop worden naadloos met elkaar verbonden tot een pakkend en smaakvol geheel.

In de vroege jaren '90 raakte Maximo Graesse Bondino verslingert aan de dance/electronica van Berlijn en Keulen. Hij werd platenboer in de Kompakt shop en werkte als dj succesvol de nodige cult clubs af: Tresor, WMF, Studio 672, Liquid Sky, Golden Pudel.

THE MOI NON PLUS
Gitaar, drums en hier en daar een sample, veel meer is er bij dit tweetal (Bas Morsch en Leon Caren) niet nodig om goede muziek te maken. The Moi Non Plus = excellente indie / noise rock.

BONNE APARTE
De dwingende klanken van dit (deels uit Adept leden bestaande) sextet hebben ergens wel iets gemeen met de tirranieke kwaliteiten van l' empereur. Alles gaat namelijk het liefst in het rood bij deze band. Bonne Aparte's gierende gitaarrock is te vergelijken met Shellac, Beefheart en staat garant voor een vlammende optreden.

Het zijn momenteel niet meer de technologische innovaties die voor interessante ontwikkelingen in de electronica/dance zorgen maar nieuwe stylistische crossovers en de daaruit voortkomende culturele connotaties. Zuid-Amerikaanse producers en dj's als Zurita, Chancha Via Circuito, dj Vampiros, Sonido Martines en vele anderen, creëren een verfrissend eigen stijl waarvan cumbia de basis vormt. Cumbia is van oorsprong Colombiaanse dansmuziek die vanaf midden jaren '60 vooral in de sloppenwijken gretig aftrek vondt en nu salonfähig aan het worden is. VILLA DIAMANTE, EL REMOLÓN en EL G zijn alle drie gelieerd aan ZIZEK in Buenos Aires waar zij furore maken met een wekelijkse club avond waarin cumbia gekoppeld wordt aan hiphop, dub, dancehall, idm, electro reggaeton, etc. Blijf niet stil staan en kom dit horen!

DEATH SENTENCE: PANDA!

Kim West, Paul Costuros en Chris Dixon (ook actief in Total Shutdown en Crack: We Are Rock) spelen als Death Sentence: Panda! een haast onbeschrijfbare mix van vlammende, punkachtige muziek met invloeden uit Chinese folk, opera en ragtime. Met behulp van stem, fluit, clarinet en veel percussie voorziet de band haar punk/noise rock van een comic-achtige charme en originaliteit.

It is not easy to describe the music electronic artist Doddodo (Osaka) creates, using samplers, keyboards and children's toys to combine punkrock, folk music and traditional Japanese songs with 80's breakdance and hiphop. She has been labelled as breakcore due to her heavy usage of intense drum breaks, but ultimatiley defies any safe pigeonholing. She has been donating tracks for Renda records (run by Japanese cybergrind nutter Maruosa) and self-releasing cd-r's since 2002, before being recommended to the eclectic ADAADAT label.

De uit Hamburg stammende Goldenen Zitronen begonnen hun roerige loopbaan omstreeks '84 met een kolderiek soort punk naar hun voorbeelden van eind jaren '70. Vanzelfsprekend had de band weinig op met de bestaande tradities en conventies in de muziekindustrie, maar men brak ook snel met het verwachtingspatroon van de punk/rock scene, en daarmee de obligate vergelijkingen met tijdgenoten als Abwärts, Die Toten Hosen, etc. De zitronen gingen hun eigen weg en de eerste muzikale ommeslag kwam met 'Das bisschen Totschlag' (1994) waarop met garage-trash, no wave en 60's funk/soul werd geëxperimenteerd. Het daarop volgende 'Economy Class' (1996) was beïnvloedt door impro/jazz, en op 'Dead School Hamburg' (1998) lag de nadruk op electronica. Ondanks de punk roots wordt er in de teksten van de Zitronen nooit met parolen gesmeten en met het vingertje gewezen. Zanger Schorsch Kamerun kruipt eerder in de rol van fascistoïde biergrootverbruikers in joggingbroek of onwetende hipsters en belicht daarmee op slimme wijze de (Duitse) samenleving en politiek.

Zach Hill - slagwerker van het goddelijke HELLA, de man met 8 ledematen komt weer terug naar WORM! Volgens de laatste berichten om in duo – vorm het maniakale free jazz - achtige stuk 'Necromancer' dat als bonus op z'n eerste solo album 'Astrological Straights' (Ipecac) staat. Geen mens die door Hill's kunnen onberoerd zal blijven - en dat niet alleen door 's man's onbetwiste virtuositeit en tomeloze inzet (hij mept tot aan bloedens toe door als het moet), maar ook vanwege zijn expressionistische spel dat al na een paar maten uit duizenden te herkennen is. Nog wat namedropping? Hill werkte tot op heden samen met artiesten als Sun Ra Arkestra, Deftones (Team Sleep), Mick Barr, Nels Cline, Mike Patton, The Mars Volta, Les Claypool, No Age, The Flying Luttenbachers, LCD Soundsystem... zeker niet missen!
