New DOORS album in early 2003
The Doors have confirmed they are recording their first new album in 30 years with The Cult's Ian Astbury on vocals and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland but they now also have a bass player.
The new line-up performed live for the first time just last week at the California Speedway with Copeland a late substitute for original drummer John Densmore. Densmore suffers from the hearing disorder known as Tinnitus. His contribution to the album is yet to be determined based on his condition at the time of recording. Copeland has signed on for the key drumming role and Densmore may still be used as a guest musician.
Ian Astbury has been chosen as the heir to Jim Morrison's job as he has the attributes of both poet and performer, the traits that made the Morrison magic.
Also new to the line-up and for the first time in The Doors is a bass player. Angelo Barbera will play bass on the new record. The Doors never had a bass player on any of their classic works. All bass sounds came from Ray Manzerek's keyboard. Ray told Undercover News "Lefty, my left hand, was The Doors bass player. Lefty Manzerek played bass and Ray Manzerek played keyboards. We auditioned two bass players early on when we first got started thinking we have to have a bass player but it just didn't work. We had a guy come by and play some blues and that didn't work, then another guy came by and played some more blues and that didn't work either. I said 'Sorry, we sound like the Rolling Stones'. We didn't need a bass player. Until I found that Fender Rhodes keyboard we worked without a bass player. My left hand took over once the instrument came on the scene."
The new Doors album will be released early 2003.
