Provisional Irish Republican Army, The Provos
The following information is based on "Patterns of Global Terrorism" - US State Dept. This group is a radical terrorist group formed in 1969 as clandestine armed wing of Sinn Fein, a legal political movement dedicated to removing British forces from Northern Ireland and unifying Ireland. The organization has a Marxist orientation, and is organized into small, tightly knit cells under the leadership of the Army Council. Structure They have several hundred fighters and thousands of supporters and sympathizers amongst the Irish Catholic population. The group is led by Sinn Fein, and is a legal political movement organized into several small cells led by the Council. They receive financial support and aid from sympathizers in the U.S., and have received arms and training in Libya and from the PLO. Similarities in operations suggest links to the ETA. Activities The IRA used bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, extortion, and robberies. Before its 1994 cease-fire, its targets included senior British Government officials, British military and police in Northern Ireland, and Northern Irish Loyalist paramilitary groups. Since breaking its cease-fire in February 1996, IRA's operations have included bombing campaigns against train and subway stations and shoppping areas on mainland Britain, British military and Royal Ulster Constabulary targets in Northern Ireland, and a British military facility on the European Continent. Óglaigh na hÉireann; "dissident" Irish Republican Army (dIRA) The Real IRA is a hard-line splinter group that broke away from the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in November 1997 on the background of the Northern Ireland Peace Process. The founding members of the RIRA objected to the cease-fire called by the IRA in 1997, choosing instead to continue the armed struggle. While the Provisional IRA, allied with the Sinn Fein Party, supported--and indeed helped to achieve--the peace settlement, the dissident republican groups declared that they would accept nothing less than the union of Northern Ireland with the British-controlled Irish Republic. The group’s stated objective is the disruption of the peace process, leading to a complete British withdrawal from North Ireland. Dit is exact het tegenovergestelde van de IRA: "Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) The Loyalist Volunteer Force is an extremist terrorist group formed in 1996 as a splinter of the mainstream loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). The LVF is composed of hardliners formerly associated with the UVF who refused to accept the loyalist cease-fire. They sought to undermine a political settlement with Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland by attacking Catholic politicians, civilians, and Protestant politicians who endorse the Northern Ireland peace process. Mark "Swinger" Fulton now leads the LVF following the assassination in December 1997 of LVF founder Billy "King Rat" Wright. On May 15, 1998 the LVF announced a unilateral cease-fire and on 18 December 1998--in a move unprecedented among Ulster terrorist groups--decommissioned a small but significant amount of weapons. van: www.ict.org.il International Counter Terrorism |
