Hallo,

The big shoe mystery
There washed ashore ten thousands of shoes on the seaside three weeks ago at Terschelling. That was something else than a piece of wood, fuel oil, empty bottles and other mess. There will be talk about this story for years on the Dutch Wadden.
A ship, the P&O Nedlloyd Mondriaan, lost during a storm in front of Terschelling 58 containers on Thursday evening, 9 February. The riot police watched over the cargo. The riot police came from Harlingen, because there wasn’t enough police at Terschelling.
Twelve containers were washed on the island Terschelling, 46 sank to the bottom of the sea. The contents of the containers were hamburgers, corn beef, toy, aluminium cases, shoes, and hammers. One container burst open, that’s why the coast was full with shoes.
The loose stuff was for the happy founder. The beachcombers seized the opportunity. With wheelbarrows, trailers and big shopping bags the islanders were looking for shoes. The school was closed in the afternoon, everybody was at the beach.
Some inhabitants have a whole shed full with plimsolls and other shoes. There is plenty trade and barter. But there are too much shoes for Terschelling. The tourists amuse themselves for hours with searching for right shoes.
After a cleaning action from ten days the seaside is completely free of all the stuff. With a lot of effort of all sorts of companies the seaside is cleaned. They used so-called beach sweepers. They brought all the waste to a waste-disposal in Harlingen. The nine closed containers are transported to the land. The owners of the containers will decide what they are going to do with the property.
