01 - {{{Sunset}}} - The Glowing City
![]() "I don’t think I can stress to you enough how good this album is. From start to finish (a grand total of about 18 songs), it clamors with the oddities of Bill Baird, but is considerably more pop-oriented (and accessible to the average listener) than Sunset’s earlier release this year, Bright Blue Dream. The genius of this album is really found in its flow; despite its length, the album is as strongly cohesive as any I’ve heard, if only because of Baird’s knack for finding that natural flow. 18 songs might be daunting, but listening to one by itself is like watching 5 minutes of your favorite movie - not going to work, it’s all or nothing." [bigdiction.net] (Beluister het volledige album) 02 - Son Lux - At War With Walls & Mazes ![]() "Son Lux’s first is a heady collection of songs breathing the same air and sharing the same space; painted from the same palette but set apart still—each is a distinct region of one broad, heaving sonic landscape. From afar, it’s an environment characterized by would-be contradictions: the austere grandness of chamber music undercut by undulating electronica; the intricately orchestral assembled via hip-hop collage; a day-plain pop ease silhouetted by deep soul. Up close, it’s clear that these contradictions are what hold the entire work together." [anticon.com] (Bekijk de clip van "Break") 03 - The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Grave ![]() "I personally was enamored with it the first time I heard the opening track on Shallow Grave, the fantastic 'I Won’t Be Found'. Rather than simply repeating “carpe diem”, Matsson signifies the importance of treasuring every moment in life, looking upon death as an imminent circumstance that can only be enjoyed if its preceding life was lived to the fullest extent. Over a fastidiously plucked guitar progression, he sings ardently and establishes time as a component that should be treasured. As far as recent folk artists go, I have heard very few that compare to Kristian Matsson’s raw skill as a lyricist and songwriter.” [obscuresound.com] (Beluister "I Won't Be Found", bekijk een live-uitvoering van "Where Do My Bluebirds Fly?") 04 - WHY? - Alopecia ![]() "As expected, the WHY? band continue their calculated blitzkrieg on that self-made jangle-rap, indie pop ’n’ roll genre, but the stakes are raised. In short, Alopecia is a collection of hard rhymes and raw-spun songs forced through the stubborn smile of a life-lover scorned and reborn. In long, this is an album of bone-dry jokes, suicides played out in poem, musings on final moments written inside of restrooms, begrudging self-affirmation, and the grit and glories of every day living. Yoni Wolf has returned with the Art of Songcraft tucked under his arm. Inspired as much by MF Doom and Lil’ Wayne as J. Newsom and Big Dylan, his words roll out bent and beautiful, not unlike the musical architecture that sends those words skyward." [anticon.com] (Bekijk de clips van "Song Of The Sad Assassin" en "A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under") 05 - Portishead - Third ![]() "Sonically, Third is extraordinary. Anyone foolish enough to still label this 'trip hop' will be floundering. The band now deals in a kind of psychedelic, post-industrial disjointedness. The cinematic quality of their work remains, but despite Portishead's trick of sounding like they come from hellish '60s spy movie there are signs they've listened to what's been going on over the last few years. Ironically this often means that Third comes over as very post punk. Squelchy analogue synthesizers are a big, repetitive but almost totalitarian presence. In ten years, you'll still probably be hard pressed to find anything that sounds remotely like Third: Unless they make another album. Breathtaking." [bbc.co.uk] (Bekijk de clips van "The Rip" en "We Carry On") 06 - The Matthew Herbert Big Band - There's Me And There's You ![]() "Using all the pomp and circumstance associated with the big band format, Herbert fashions an album about political power, religion, monarchy and the various ways by which authority can be abused. The way these themes come to light isn't only down to the lyrical content (with vocals soulfully handled by Eska), it's also caught up in the sampling: you'll hear credit cars being cut up, nails being hammered into coffins, and condoms being dragged across museum floors. Given all the conceptual heaviness behind the album, it's incredibly listenable, and while all the serious, thematic content is very much at the forefront, this is by no means a difficult record to absorb. Excellent." [boomkat.com] (Beluister "The Story", "The Yesness" & "Just Swing") 07 - {{{Sunset}}} - Bright Blue Dream ![]() "Bright Blue Dream is the first widely available full-length from Bill Baird’s {{{Sunset}}}. This record is a follow-up to his previous CDR and cassette albums, {{{Sunset}}}, Silence!, and Pink Clouds, which were released through 2006 and 2007. All of the distinctive song styles from {{{Sunset}}}’s previous releases are represented here, yet are more finely tuned and expansive, brought together by a vividly colorful and meditative feel. Bill’s craftsmanship, production, and darkly humorous songwriting take an impressive leap forward with Bright Blue Dream." [autobusrecs.com] (Beluister het volledige album) 08 - Tape - Luminarium "Luminarum is a further step forward in the band's evolution, bringing together a collection of mostly brief instrumental songs loaded with atmosphere, electronic nuance, and above all timeless melodies. The only really useful comparisons to make would be to other Tape albums, and Luminarum finds this unique Swedish troupe at least equalling, if not bettering the genre-defying work they've made their name with. Amazing stuff - Highly Recommended." [boomkat.com] (Luister naar "Beams") 09 - Ezekiel Honig - Surfaces Of A Broken Marching Band ![]() "Honig's attention to detail is just staggering, seemingly filling up acres of space with droves of delicate sonic minutiae all moving around in a carefully choreographed pattern. It's hard to put your finger on exactly what makes Surfaces Of A Broken Marching Band such a freakishly good ambient record, but its success must be at least partly attributable to the immersive depth of Honig's ornate production style. Brilliant, and the sort of record you could recommend to just about anyone with an interest in electronic music..." [boomkat.com] (Beluister het volledige album) 10 - Ratatat - LP3 ![]() "Using actual keyboards as a backdrop gives these new tracks room to breathe, and more often than not, the guitars actually sound like guitars. Still, there's no mistaking this for anything other than Ratatat. The leap from the constant high-energy rave-up of their debut to the more subtle workings of Classics was impressive enough, but the ability shown here to segue smoothly from dance-oriented tracks (“Shempi”) to more emotional fare (“Black Heroes”) is the mark of a band that is in full control of its sound. It is the most realized of their albums to date, and it showcases the group fully exploring the possibilities of the niche that they created for themselves two records ago."[prefixmag.com] (Bekijk de clips van "Shempi", "Mirando" en "Flynn")
