ik heb nu al enige tijd last van het probleem dat X windows niet op wil starten..
Heel vreemd..
ik krijg het logo in beeld te zien enzo van dat hij start, en daarna stopt hij gewoon alsof hij klaar is met laden
dacht eerst dat het aan de resolutie ofzo lag, maar dat is het ook niet..

iemand nog tips?

Als hij naar de grafische modus switcht en er vervolgens weer uitvliegt, ligt het vaak aan iets anders.

Maak anders eens het bestand ~/.xinitrc aan, met daarin de regel "xterm". Blijft hij dan wel actief?

Daarnaast zou het leuk zijn als je ons het XFree86 log zou kunnen geven (/var/log/XFree86.0.log).

nou hij vliegt er dus niet uit.. hij blijft 'hangen', en ik stop alles weer met ctrl-alt-backspace.

en met dit progje zou ik het eea ook moeten kunnen instellen:

redhat-config-xfree86

dan krijg ik wel een gui te zien, en kan ik mijn resolutie enz instellen, gaat allemaal gewoon goed.
maar zodra ik startx start, gebeurd er op een gegeven moment niks meer

Het wordt mij niet helemaal duidelijk of je nu wel of geen beeld te zien krijgt. Als ik je log zo zie, lijkt ie namelijk een heleboel resoluties met frequenties te proben die gewoon niet werken, omdat de ranges niet goed ingesteld zijn.

Je monitor vliegt niet naar standby bij 't starten van X? Het zou kunnen dat X een resolutie met verticale en horizontale refresh probeert te starten, die je monitor niet aankan.

Weet je zeker dat je horizrefresh en vertrefresh goed staan ingesteld?

Hm, nou ik krijg dus wel een beetje beeld..
Zodra ik startx start, dan krijg ik het logo te zien van redhat, met een muisaanwijzer die ik ook nog eens kan bewegen.
Na dit logo hoort hij het bureaublad enz weer te geven, maar dit weigert hij dus.
Hij blijft hangen op de een of andere manier.

Vergelijk het een beetje met het scherm: Windows word opgestart, en dat er onderin die streepjes heen en weer lopen als teken dat hij bezig is, en op eens stoppen die streepjes en er gebeurd niks meer.

Dat is wat er dus gebeurd.
En het lijkt me dat mijn instellingen wel goed zijn, want het heeft altijd goed gewerkt. Ik heb geen enkele instellingen veranderd, maar van het een op het andere moment werkt het gewoon niet meer...

Hm dat klinkt eigenlijk eerder of je window manager niet boot, X lijkt wel goed te werken dus.
