Hoi,

Begin volgend jaar (januari tot juni) wil ik gaan deelnemen aan een uitwisselingsprogramma zodat ik die tijd in Londen kan studeren aan de UCL. Ik studeer nu Nederlandse Taal & Cultuur met de specialisatie taalbeheersing (waarvan ik nog een goede omschrijving in het engels nodig heb) en wil daar vakken volgen op het gebied van 'human communication'. Met onderstaande e-mail wil ik informeren of het mogelijk en zinvol is om een bepaald vak maar voor de helft te volgen. Mijn formele Engels is helaas nogal roestig omdat ik na het VWO nooit iets in het Engels heb hoeven schrijven. Vandaar dat ik me afvraag of iemand de tekst eens wil nakijken en ook of mijn intenties en vragen goed uit de verf komen? Alvast heel erg bedankt!

A few weeks ago I received a confirmation of my socrates scholarship.

I'm currently planning the study programme I'll be following on the University College of London for the second and the third term of this year. My professor, Mr. Berenst, suggested a few courses for me to follow that would contribute to my major "vakgebied".

Two of these courses are given by the Department of Human Communication, namely, Children’s Language Development and Research Methods and Statistics.

The CLD course only seems to be available for a whole year. I was wondering if it is possible to make an exception for students who already have some knowledge of CLD. I followed and completed an introductory course for half a year using the book "Pathways to Language" by Kyra Karmiloff and Annette Karmiloff-Smith. Do you know if such an exception could be made, and if following this course at your university would be a constructive contribution to my study? I apologize if answering such questions is not covered by your function - could you please redirect me to the correct person if that's the case? Thank you in advance for any information,

- Schrijf in formeel Engels altijd samentrekking volledig uit. Dus niet 'I'm' maar 'I am'. Niet "I'll' maar "I will".

- Aangezien je brief naar Londen gaat: in Brits Engels schrijf je 'apologise' en niet 'apologize'.

Paar kleine puntjes. Eventuele tips op zinsniveau laat ik even aan iemand anders over.

Taalbeheersing heet volgens mij 'applied linguistics'

Andijvie dat is inderdaad precies wat ik zoek, erg bedankt! En zowel Metallicat als mathfreak ook erg bedankt voor jullie suggesties en verbeteringen, ik ga ze zeker gebruiken. Ik was nog wel wat onzeker over de één na laatste zin: "could you please redirect me to the correct person if that's the case". Is die niet wat omslachtig en 'hollands' geformuleerd?

Ik vind die zin prima klinken

In het Brits Engels wordt het ook wel met een Z geschreven. Je hebt inderdaad gelijk dat het officieel gezien in het Brits met een S geschreven wordt maar in de praktijk wordt dit de laatste jaren steeds minder gedaan. Ben een paar keer het woord 'realize' (met een Z dus) tegengekomen in een Engelstalig boek geschreven door een Britse schrijver en heb t toen aan m'n docent Engelse literatuur gevraagd en bovenstaande was zijn antwoord

Die was ik inderdaad vergeten te corrigeren. Helaas kan ik dat niet meer, omdat ik al over de toegestane tijdslimiet heen ben.

June Bug, daar heb je wel gelijk in. Toch vind ik het wel mooi, juist als non-native speaker om gewoon die regel aan te houden. En wat je ook doet, zorg iig dat je consequent bent. Dus of 'z', of 's', niet door elkaar.
